Why are Conservatives attacking SpongeBob??

I just saw the "We are Family" video on MSNBC. Spongebob is in it, but only for a few seconds -- it's mostly the Muppets, Sesame Street, and Arthur -- with appearances by Winnie the Pooh, Lilo & Stitch, Rugrats, Blues Clues, Barney and just about every current show on Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel. and no one was promoting an alternate lifestyle.

where does this guy get his ideas?

The MSNBC guy also pointed out that Winnie the Pooh wasn't wearing any pants. Why aren't we hearing complaints about that! :jester:

who lives in a pineapple under the sea? hopefully the religious right soon. so they'll drown and die and go away. whatever happened to picking your battles? we've got men dying in Iraq and this is the new campaign? cluster bomb the 700 club, please.

They should be attacking SpongeBob because it is a stupid cartoon not because it might be promoting homosexuality.

Dobson's book promotes child abuse as far as I am concerned.

He recommends spanking as one of the FIRST resorts of "discipline". Not a last resort. In my opinion, hitting is not an option at all, but some people choose to strike their children and they do not need a book to encourage it as a FIRST choice of discipline. Show 'em whose boss mentality

He also recommends fifteen months old (yes, 15 months old!) as a good time to start hitting your child. Oh, and don't use your hand. He actually gives a list of thngs to use to hit your child.

Trash.

You have to the right to disipline you child however you see fit. But spanking your child on their bottom is not "hitting" the child. It is a form of punishment that teaches the child that there are consequences to their actions. A child of that age has to relize their are consequences, and that age it has to be a simple but to the point.

Again, if that is not your choice in disipline, fine, but don't make people who spank (not hit or abuse) out to be child abusers.

When you spank your child, you are hitting your child.

How can you even argue that? You are taking your hand (or a "small belt" or a branch of a tree, that is if you are listening to Dobson) and you are inflicting pain on your child to "teach 'em a lesson" or get their attention.

That is called hitting. Spanking just sounds nicer :D

While I certainly don't agree with what they were doing, it's unfortunate that their freedom of speech is being prosecuted. :guilty:

I do not think that the Philly police would arrest them if they were just voicing an opinion. Apparantly, they tried to use God as an excuse to be disruptive. :earseek:

:cool1:

It wouldn't be America if some conservative wasn't attacking someone or something that is of no threat to them or anyone else. But Spongebob? They must be low on things to complain about.

People who spank on the bottom with an open hand are not abusers. But, IMO, people who use a tool to spank with are abusers. Dobson recommends that you and your child go out and pick a nice switch from a tree to use on your child. If that isn't convenient, use a belt to beat him or her. That is abuse.

There was a segment on this "controversy" on the Today show this morning. I miss part of it but it looked like that some were shocked that Dobson is making a big deal over this.

This remains me about the Murphy Brown attack by Dan Qualye. Dobson seems to be just as stupid as old Danny boy.

Its unfortunate that people view this as "Conservatives" or "Christians" attacking Spongebob. This man happens to be a Conservative Christian who is attacking Spongebob. He doesn't speak for all Conservatives or all Christians. Blanket statements about any group have a tendency to be inflammatory.

I would be willing to bet my pineapple under the sea that most people think this type of analysis of a kids video is WAY over the top.

Personally, I think Spongebob and Mrs Puff have a little thing going on after all of those driving lessons.

I am a conservative Christian and I LOVE Spongebob.

They had Nile Rodgers on the Today show, the founder of the We Are Family Foundation. A foundation created to promote tolerance and equality in the aftermath of 9/11.
Not to be confused with We Are Family.org, a pro-homosexual website.

Nile thought what happened was that Dobson and his followers viewed the wrong website. They were informed that it was the wrong website, but have not apologized or changed their stance. Typical.

I can't stand Dobson. My dad has been a follower/listener of his for years and years, and I know what kind of "discipline" we had in the house. And yeah, I have issues with it.
Dobson also believes that he can cast out demons from people, the depression and other mental illnesses are the cause of demons, etc.
He is a nutcase.......I can't stand these evangelists who claim a close relationship with god and use it to part the gullible from their money. He is quick to pass around the collection plate at his "sermons" and appearances.

Extremism in either direction (too far "left" or too far "right") is always dangerous.

Plus, some people have a little too much time on their hands!

Why is a pain a bad thing. Again I am not talking about brusing the child or leaving marks. I am talking about at a young age teaching them that there are consequences to their actions.

Here's hoping I'm wrong, and there actually is a God....and when "people" like this scumbag get to heaven, God swishes right up to them, slaps them with his purse, and says "Where you think you're goin', girlfriend ?"

Very good!!! :o)

We TIVOed it off of Countdown last night - Belle was in munchkin heaven, we watched 5 times this morning, actually missed Spongebob because of it!

Dobson is fruitier than the sponge!

According to this article, Dobson is objecting to the concept of tolerance so long as the term tolerance included sexual preference. See http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/nation/3002648
Christian groups however have taken exception to the tolerance pledge on the foundation's Web site which asks people to respect the sexual identity of others along with their abilities, beliefs, culture and race.

"Their inclusion of the reference to 'sexual identity" within their 'tolerance pledge' is not only unnecessary but it crosses a moral line," Dr James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said in a statement on Thursday.

Rodgers was astounded at the attack. "That is so myopic and harsh. You have really got to look hard to find anything in this that is offensive to anyone. The last thing I am going to do is taint these characters," he told Reuters.
The concept of tolerance is a difficult concept to attack. I strongly believe in tolerance and find the concept that someone finds tolerance objectionalble disturbing.

Dobson and co. really are nut cases. Does any one else thing that tolerance is not a good value?

Why is pain a bad thing? Why is inflicting pain on another human being a bad thing :earseek: I won't even waste my time.
