Why all the political tags?

Just so you understand why these signatures are allowed, this is from our Board Guidelines

I know that there are many online forums that limit what is allowed in signatures or require that it all be "on topic" to that particular forum, but the DIS is not that way. Personally that is one of the reasons that I like it so much here! As long as your signature complys with the DIS guidelines for size and decency and doesn't violate our rules and TOS then you are welcome to put whatever you would like in it.

As someone mentioned, there is an option to turn off signatures in your User CP if they are really bothering you. Just remember to turn them back on come Nov 5th! ;)

Yea, that's what it says alright, but I've seen topics debated fairly and respectfully, that have disappeared, and others that IMO are just plain wrong, that I reported that nothing ever happens to. So it's fine to debate things so long as the admins/owners of the DIS agree with them..

Most vbulletin boards will allow you to turn off avatars also, not sure if they've disabled that here also..

I can't stand the political bullying. When I made the mistake of blundering into the political threads of this board a month ago, the aggresive intolerance and almost cultish bahaviour on display scared me away until ... today, actually.

Even here in Canada we're starting to develop the same ugly partisans you've got down South. Just today I read in the paper about cars in a neibourhood being keyed because their owners had a certain party's sign on their lawn. (I have strong political opinions but cannot comprehend people who devote themselves to the politicians and parties themselves.)

Sorta-funny story: my mother-in-law is French Canadian and when we went to Disney with us last February, the wife and I had to restrain her from asking political questions to every random Yank she met (it was her first trip to the States). For French Canadians, politics and religion are common topics for lively, full-throated donnybrooks. But the interesting thing is there's never any personal rancor in the way they do it. It's intellectual play for them, with very little personal investment.

It fell upon me, her WASPy son-in-law, to explain how some folks find it rude to bring up religion and politics with strangers. I was raised to believe that and, the way things are trending away from intelligent debate and towards unthinking vitriol, I only feel that's its basic etiquette.

I agree. I find it annoying either way. Especially when the tag only degrades the candidate they DON'T like.
Isn't there enough places to go to talk politics?
Plus do you really think that will convince anyone?

I don't really mind seeing political stuff in people's personal sigs. I tend to be able to ignore them and when I look at them, if it's something I disagree with, I just shrug.

But I'm wondering why McCain/Palin banners keep popping up all the time these days saying they are paid ads at the top or bottom of discussions I'm trying to read! Now THAT bothers me. Does this forum as a whole therefore support McCain/Palin? I don't think so but it gives that impression.

I totally agree, because I am very passionate about my politics, however, here on the DIS I only want to think of Mickey. Hey, maybe he should run for president!
:rotfl2:

Hey, I'm with you! I really am tired of seeing the other guy. I fully support my guy!:thumbsup2

The Ads are not supported/placed by the DIS. They are automatically placed there (but I have no idea how or by who). Something to do with advertising to offset costs I think? I think they are Google ads? We have no control over them . They sometimes have to do with the topic being discussed--not sure if they can "read" signatures and match to that?

If it is really bothersome you might change your "skin" I use the DIS Podcast theme and there are very few ads. Again, they are something that I really totally ignore and don't see. But I don't think there are any ads on this skin.

ETA: Yep, just checked. NO ADS on this skin!

I have to say I am very disappointed in all the political tags I see on people's signatures. Does anyone else feel this way?

I think we all come to this site to escape reality a little and talk about Disney, not to be bombarded by peoples political opinions.

I am sure you feel strongly about your candidate and that is a good thing, but I feel strongly about whom I want to be president as well but I just don't think this is the arena to be sending that message.

If my thoughts on this are wrong, let me know and maybe I will start supporting my candidate on here as well.

With all due respect, if the siggies here on the Dis disappoint you then heaven forbid you escape reality to WDW and see t-shirt's endorsing political viewpoints and ideas you do not agree with. I mean, why single out only the siggies endorsing candidates...the same argument can be said about siggies containing "Say No To Florida's Amendment 2" (so called Florida Marriage Protection Amendment) and so on and so forth?

It basically boils down to this:

I don't have a clue what you're talking about when you tell me to change my "skin."

Sorry! On the Main Forum page there is a drop down box on the far right that says something like "change color" There are a bunch of different options. Some of the boards have a "skin" color that is automatic, like the cruise boards and the Resorts boards--you will get a specific color scheme when you go to them. But I have DISUnpluged as my default. It is a lovely combo of orange and purple. Sounds bad, but it is easy on my eyes, and absolutely no ads.
