Whose "owns" the loose change at your house?

Found change is called the "maid's tip" in our house. I guess I'm the maid.

I save it and put it towards vacation. Last time I rolled it because DD was in kindergarten and it was good practice counting the change for her. I took it to my bank and they told me they didn't take rolled change anymore, I had to dump it in the change machine. I was aggravated for a few minutes because it was hours of work, but in the end still good practice for DD.

The BASEMENT! LOL!!! ;)

Seriously. All change goes in a container near the washing machine. My husband pretty much leaves it alone (Does he know it exists...? ;) ) but I snag change for the Coke machine at work occasionally.

Holy cow, that's quite a haul!

Loose change goes into a big cigar box. Basically anyone can grab some out of the box within reason, and when we fill the box, we take it to the bank. Maybe about $100 will fit in the box.

Dollar bills go to me. Since I do everybody's pants at the same time, there's no way of knowing who it belongs to. If somebody says to me that they lost a particular denomination, I'll make sure it gets back to them, but otherwise I just pocket it. I don't feel bad about doing that. My husband and I share everything anyway, and the kids get money from me for this or that all the time, so it all evens out in the end.

It belongs to the kids. They put it in a jar and we roll it and exchange it for cash every now and then when needed. Last time it paid for Webkinz Deluxe Family membership.

If I find it, the Disney change bucket owns it. If DH finds it, most of the time it's his. Sometimes he'll put it in the bucket but not frequently.

I'm definitely the saver in the family. If it were up to him we'd have a house full of electronics and video games, pennies in our bank acct, no lights or water, and moths flying out of our wallets. :lmao:

my DH collects all the loose change at our house in a bowl. when the bowl is full, he puts it in a five gallon, glass pickle jar, until he feels like counting it up. sometimes he counts it just out of curiosity, lol. i'm sure there's probably a couple hundred dollars in there, at least. whenever he buys something, he never gives exact change, so he can get change back and put it in the bowl, lol.

My old bank would just put it in the machine. My new bank makes you roll it. I hate it. For this very reason, the change in our house usually belongs to whoever is feeling ambitious enough to roll it up. Last time I cleaned $40 in change just out of my purse. :scared1: It's really just DH and I at the house so we stick the change in a jar and when it's rolled, it's deposited in the savings account.

I will bet that purse was a whole lot lighter after that! ;)

I get all loose change in our house and I put it in a jar for vacation souveniers. We had about $300 for our Disney trip in August after about a year of change saving.

My problem is the bank keeps changing their policy on change. I wrapped change one year and they made me unwrap it for the machine. The next year I brought the jar and they sent me back home with wrappers because they didn't have a change counter! This year I called before we wnt and we are back to unwrapped!:confused3

We have a "community pot". It's really just a casino cup from one of the casinos in LV, I think the Aladdin (that tells you how long it's been since our Las Vegas trip!). It's not just found change, but change that accumulates in DH's pants or my pocketbook. We need to buy one of those water containers to put our change in because at this moment, "our cup runneth over". ;)

ETA: The change is rolled by our daughters before a Disney trip for use as spending money. Unfortunately, no Disney in sight.

I feel that the owner still owns it, but nobody makes a big deal over loose change here. What I do when I find loose change is gather it up and put it in a bank or jar. I don't really care if anybody takes change out of there---most of the time it just gets left there, so it must not be missed.

When I find a bill, if it's just a dollar, I'll just throw it on the counter or something. If it doesn't get claimed, I might throw it in my purse and use it myself. If it's more money, I do try to find out who it belongs to, or they'll let me know it's missing and I give it to them.

sadly we don't have a lot of change around. but if we do, I think I will start a change jar like so many of you have.

I have to mention the best source of change I ever encountered was when I worked at a movie theatre in high school. we would clean the theatres in between showings, and the amount of change found around the seats was amazing. definitely a perk! :)

We have a big water jug that DH spray painted black. We put all silver in there for our Disney trip. We also put in some bills once in a while. We have no idea how much in there since you can't see in. DH did say if we ever have a fire grab the Disney jug and run.:) It will be fun to count next summer.

Our loose change belongs to Mickey Mouse. We hand deliever it to him each trip. It is a win-win. He's happy, we're happy. :)

My bank has one of those coin machines and it sorts it out and spit out a piece of paper with your total. Take that receipt to a teller and they give you the $$. Much better than rolling.

Years ago when we rolled, we rolled and had enough change to pay for our motel room at the All Star Sports for 1 week. :)

In our house? I do.

If I find change, it is MINE. But really, DH and I throw it all into a big jar we have. Every now and then, I take the jar and dump it in the coinstar machine and trade it in for Amazon.com gift cards. My bank only takes rolled coins, and a limit of 10 rolls per day, so it's kind of a pain to take it to my banki. Last year I cashed it all in at the Coinstar, and I got about $600 in gift cards for AMazon, and did ALL my Christmas shopping that way. I've probably got about $200 more now, but I'll wait a while before I cash it in again.

How do any of you do this??? My kid's own the change 2 seconds after it hits the counter, table, dresser, etc. My son is the biggest culprit. Bought his new TV last year with just saving my change. lol :happytv:

At our house we have a jar on the kitchen counter. Each Sunday we grab a small handful to put into the cups of the small children from our church that collect it during the church service. The little children have their own youth ministries- they donate and help out others in need with the coins they collect.

We very very rarely use cash in our house, so we don't often have change laying around. If we do find change it gets tossed in a bag that goes in the car for when we have to pay for parking at a meter or for tolls.
