I voted no, although that's technically not right. I'm off but am on call all day so I can't really do much right now. If I don't get called in the next hour I'll be past the "danger zone" and most likely won't be called. Good thing is I get on call pay for watching TV and playing World of Warcraft all day
I have the day off. I work for a software company and it is closed. In fact, if the 4th was on a weekend, I would end up with either that Friday or that Monday off.
Although one year a few years ago I ended up working on the 4th of July because of software changes we had to make for a customer that was due right around then. I either got a day off later or a bonus, I forget which.
I was scheduled to work 3-11 saturday and sunday, and 10AM-1:30PM today. The time today, double time, plus my holiday pay And still plenty of time for me to enjoy our family picnic this afternoon.
But that's not quite how it worked out.
On Sunday night, at 11PM, my relief never showed up. Because I'm in a health care situation at the group home, a staff member MUST always be there. The policy is that if your relief doesn't show up, you are stuck unless you can call down the list and find someone else willing to come in. Well, after 11PM on a holiday weekend, nobody was willing to come in and work 11PM-8:30AM. So I worked a double last night (9 1/2 hours of double time instead of 3 1/2). So I made a boat load of extra money, but boy was I tired this morning (and legally I couldn't work my 10-1:30 shift today because there wasn't at least 4 hours in between, and I did find someone to cover it). I slept most of the day, but luckily I was still able to attend the picnic and fireworks tonight.
I am an RN, this year I worked Christmas Eve, Christmas, Thanksgiving, day after Thanksgiving, Halloween, Memorial Day, and YES I am also working on the 4th of July. And holidays are always busy too. I do get Labor Day off WOOHOO. Oh I did also work NYE and New Years too. I have yet to get a holiday off!
Let me think: In the last year, I worked Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, New Years Day, Easter, Fourth of July. I work per diem, and have to work a certain number of hours each quarter, and those holiday hours are always available...I kind of like working most of the holidays because things are usually quiet at my workplace, up to half of the residents go home to spend the holidays with their family, so its like half of the work for twice the pay!
This year I was off (between jobs), but I worked the last three years. I did not receive any holiday pay for my work, and we were on extended hours. Can't complain, I loved my job, but it was hard to see others enjoying their holiday when I was stuck at work.
I usually have to work July 4. But, I usually don't work Mondays anyway so I just made sure I requested it off. It's the first time in 5 years I have had it off and it's awesome. It's not a holiday at my work, nor would I get time and a half or double time.
God bless you, I've been there, done that. I have worked my fair share of holidays at the children's hospital. Not that i really minded. Kids don't stop being sick or hurt just because it's July 4th or Thanksgiving or Christmas. We nurses would always bring in food, funny hats, and decorations and make a big party out of it. Now that i'm a school nurse I get all the holidays off(and then some!) I kinda miss working the holidays now--but not so much that I would go back to working night shift in the PICU.
We do always try to make it fun. I am always so humbled by how many people bring us treats and say thanks. I really do like my job and I do love our patients. I just miss my family too. I know the patients miss their family too! We make the best of it.
