It is not forbidden right? I have seen that they recommend not to so you can hear announcements but it has changed my running alot.

I'm definitely using one. I need it for pacing (and sanity). I love all things disney, but I can't fathon trying to get past 10 miles listening to "When you wish upon a star" or whatever's playing when I run by :). I'll just listen in one ear if necessary at times.

I'm using mine in the half, but not the full. I'm running with someone in the full, so I'll have someone to talk to. I'll only use one earbud though. I have a selection of songs that are motivating and all the same pace that I run, so it's hard to run without that.

I've never heard of them doing anythign about iPods. However, I have heard of people having their iPods on so loud tha thtey did not ehar emergency vehicles. Yes, if you keep it soft so that you can hear your surrounds, and you'll want to hear music in the parks and such, you will be ok.

I have it with me on the full, don't use it for the half. You do want to always be aware of your surroundings so have the volume so you can hear outside sources, people passing etc.

I never run with music because I like to be aware of my surroundings, but I know that's not the norm. I would just suggest taking the earphones off while you're in the parks because it's very crowded and lots of people are stopping suddenly for pictures. It takes some concentration not to end up in a collision.

No ipod for me. I'll take it just in case, but all my long runs I didn't use it.

The only time I use mine anymore is if I have to run on the treadmill in the gym because I hate their music. Otherwise I've trained myself not to use it and have actually found my pace improves because I'm monitoring my breathing more closely and matching my steps to it. I don't overdo and have to pull out the inhaler.

So I'm in the not using it column. :goodvibes

I use my Ipod for every run. Short, long, medium, it doesn't matter I use it.

But, never used it for Disney. I took it a couple of times but never turned it on. There was so much going on and so many people around me that I never needed it. And yes, there are some long stretches where it gets boring but that is the time to reflect and just enjoy the day!

enjoy,
Duane

I'm packing an iPhone and listening to music :)

I never anticipated the phone would become an integral part of my running
routine -- I now use RunKeeper for tracking/pacing and Genius playlists as
by DJ :) :)

My first half marathon, I had an iPod but didn't turn it on until about the
eighth mile... I was losing steam... and it gave me a definite second wind.

The next half marathon, I left the iPod on while in my pocket... draining
the battery before the race started. I had a personal worst performance that
year (could be unrelated, I'm just sayin'...)

Less than three weeks.

I never run with music because I like to be aware of my surroundings, but I know that's not the norm.

Me too. Even more than being aware of them, I like to soak in my surroundings and all the random sights and sounds within them. Plus, I like to chat with my friends and fellow runners during long runs. :)

I always run with mine and have it on really low so that I can hear the music but also hear everything going on around me

use mine for about half my runs. I have different play lists set to different paces, so I can run to my pace that matches the music.

Last year for the full, I actually set my whole playlist based on the route and the turn by turn account that someone posted on here.

I had a diffent theme for each park and also for the sections in between.

In addition, I was able to place my "inspiration song" where I needed it. The out and back, the overpass, the cloverleaf...anywhere that people mentioned might be a little mentally challanging. And it worked. Running through the MK and the castle to the soundtrack from the Magical Fireworks, was exactaly that.

I do usuallly run with just one ear piece in, so I can keep in contact with what is happening around me.

Just do what is comfortable for you and what you feel you need to have the best possible race.

have fun! 19 days! WOO HOO!:yay:

I've gone purist the last few years and havent run to music at all. go figure.

But i believe you're allowed to have an ipod as long as you maintain situational awareness and aren't planning on winning (as if you're racing for a win you can't use an ipod).

A few years back USATF, the sanctioning body and insurance provider decided to force race directors to carry out the ban that had been in lace since the early days. A few races DQ'd folks based on finish line photos. Disney came out with strict language that year but did not really do much more than put the language into the literature. Fortunately for John, the race that DQ's about a third of the runners was a couple months pre-Disney and the racing public was not amused. It's funny since that same year when Disney was looking to DQ podium finishers with earphones they pictured in the press release an age group winner with ear buds in at the finish. Go figure.

Anyway, I and many of your fellow runners ask that you be considerate of us who do not wear ipods and the like and keep the volume low enough so that a runner can verbally announce passing, cutting through or your shoe needs tied.

I have run most of my 2010 fall runs with my iPod and am not sure of Disney. More than likliy will have the shuffle in Orlando but most likely will not have it at the race.

I do have a bad history with an old iPod that I ironically tossed int he trash today. In 2007, I was post surgery and needed a pick me up. It was dang hot and I started dumping water over my head early in the race. (I apologize now if you were in rear of the race where the even ran out of water.) Needless to say, the iPod is far from waterproof and it shorted out around mile 7 of the full. I was just to the point of the course where I needed a slight pick me up.

I always run with my ipod, I feel it gets me through the harder miles. I will definately have it at the princess half but I do have it on low so I can hear what is going on around me!

I am def bringing mine. I have done a few races without it and they were BORING!!! I too keep the music low and sometimes only one earbud in.

I'm not sure if I'll use mine. Lately I've mostly been listening to my favorite running podcast on long runs (sometimes switching to music the last few miles), and often don't use it on shorter runs any more. I'll probably bring it, but may not listen much.

I don't get it. Why can't you win the race if you wear an ipod? Why would the care?

It has always been thought that driving music lowers perceived exertion during a hard run/activity giving an unfair advantage to opponents who do not have access to the technology or course knowledge to peak music in the toughest spots. In addition, they have been thought to be dangerous to both runners wearing them and to opponents. (no flames, please, we still do not wear headphones in triathlons).

Recently, Drs.Dyrlund & Wininger from Western Kentucky published a study in the Journal of Music Thearpy. In the abstract to the 2008 study titled, “ The effects of music preference and exercise intensity on affective variables,” the stated purpose of the study was to “examine the effects of music preference and exercise intensity on exercise enjoyment, perceived exertion (RPE), and attentional focus.” Briefly the study assigned participants into one of three music pools, liked, disliked and no music. The study concluded that participants with music were more easily able to disassociate from he intensity of the activity. This drive RPE down and performance up.

In a very non-scientific manner, the previous posts could be construed to conclude the same results.

I guess this is a long way of saying it can give an unfair advantage.
