We were on the Magic 9/1/08 and went into a hurricane and it was BAD, yet nothing near the caliber of this last Fantasy cruise. In our case, Captain Tom aborted the plan to dock in CC (which was good, as it was destroyed overnight), and turned the ship around to sail away from the storm. Nonetheless, the whole ship was up at 3am, while the both rocked so badly that stuff was falling off shelves and tables, you had to crawl across the cabin cause we were so inclined, water was just pouring out of the pools and across Deck 9, then down into the midship elevator shafts. People in the atrium were flipping out with the water coming down into the elevators (the Deck 9 elevator lobby was getting water, so it was coming into the elevators that way). Nightmare.
But NOTHING compared to the footage I have seen from the Fantasy last week! That is crazy and way, way worse. My take is that yes, the ship can handle it. Yes, people have sailed in worse. But it's a vacation, not a military mission! The point is not just to return alive! I mean, you get home, people ask how the trip was, no one answers "Well I survived, so I guess that's a success!" It seems like guest comfort and sanity was not taken into consideration.
