Who's had a child get sick at WDW?

We got back a couple of days ago from our first family trip to Disney World. It was a great trip overall, but we ended up at the CentraCare walk-in clinic on Day 5 because my DS5 wouldn't stop coughing. It turns out that the smoke from wildfires in the area actually made him sick. YIKES! As soon as we returned home, his cough stopped and my DS2 started vomiting.

It got me thinking... Is it just our bad luck, or do lots of others have to deal with this as well???

And... while we're on the subject... what's the best place to go if your child is sick at Disney?

The last night of our first Disney cruise DS who was 3 at the time got a raging ear infection. The second one of his life. We were told not to fly by the ships doc. The good thing was that we are DVC members and were heading to WDW after the cruise anyway so we had a small kitchen to store meds and make him mac n cheese etc.

So I say if your child is sick try to get a villa so you have a place to rest and cook light in the kitchenette if you get a studio or for 1br and up they have full kitchens.

We just mulled around for a few days and once he was fever free for 2 days eating drinking and acting normal we started to stroll the parks with him in a stroller. After a few days he was fine and we were able to finish the vacation healthy


Sorry your kids got sick.

We all got sick with a 24 hour stomach virus on our Feb. trip last year. It was a 12 night trip, and the bug began right in the middle of it. It began with our (then) 11 month old and then each day one of us would get better and the next one got sick. We missed a lot of time, which is why we went back in May. lol We didn't have to go to the Dr., fortunately.

My oldest DD got sick last summer with a ear ache that got worst as days went on. Finally she was crying , she never cries, she was 12 and always acting mean and stuff. I knew she was telling the truth so I had to find a clinic. I found one, can't think of the name, but it was an evening clinic and she was treated for swim ear that had actually gotten infected. The clinic fee was $75 I believe and her medicine was $35, not in my budget at all. But worst of all, she was mad she couldn't swim the remainder of the trip AND SHE LOVES TO SWIM. Taught me a lesson, to take an extra $200 for emergencies.

My DD didn't get sick per say, but had a horrible allergic reaction to a pretzel that she ate on the plane ride down last year. She is allergic to nuts and treee nuts and little did we know that the small pretzel they served on the plane was manufactured in a factory that also produces nuts and tree nuts. We didn't know that her allergy was that severe until this incident.

She only ate 2 of the small pretzels and by the time we landed, she was starting to get welts around her ears. At first I thought it was that she didn't get all her shampoo rinsed out that morning (which happens frequently), so I didn't really think anything about it. But, once we got in the rental car, she was really starting to break out. No problems breathing - Thank God!!

Long story short, we called our Ped. and they called us in an epi pen refill (which I had forgotten to bring - I know, I get the worst mother of the year award!!) and a steriod. We didn't need to get to a clinic, but our Ped did locate one for us if we needed to get to one. We love our Ped!!

Our Ped always says to call them first and often they can call something in for your child or if not will recomend somewhere to take them.

when my DS was 15 months, he had a high fever while we were in WDW, we had a Dr. come to our room at BWV.... it was about $225, I think, but my ins. reimbursed us. (turned out he had roseola)

Both my DH and I got sick on our last trip. We took turns staying in the room and walking our daughter around Magic Kingdom. If this ever happens again call your ped first! We did this in Arizona, and because our daughter while visiting was acting like she had an ear infection, they called in a prescription. It was a lifesaver since we didnt have to go to the doctor.

DH got strep and a fever of over 102 at Disneyland one year. My boys were 12 months and 2 at the time. I took the older one to the park by myself and DH "watched" the younger one from the bed. Then I said let's bag this and go home. It was not worth it. That night my older son started throwing up. That vacation went down in the history of our most unique.

On our first trip with our eldest DS (he was 2 1/2 hes now 14 - and I can remeber like it was yesterday, one of the most frightening nights of my life) was rushed by ambulance to hospital following a convulsion the first he had ever had, it was so traumatic with paramedics and fire engines and being told that we could not travel in the ambulance with him! which is something that caused me to have hysterics, we were a long way from home (we live in the UK) and eventually they allowed me to ride up front and DH went on the fire engine (he doesn't drive), well suffice it to say he was fine in a couple of days all caused by tonsilitis - we think that maybe the airconditioning was to cold for him this is something that we have no need of in London. Our next trip 4 years later he was 6 and youngest was 2, eldest DS had larongytis (excuse spelling) but we coped well no panics this time - then 2 days late youngest DS had an allergic reaction to peanuts, I am still too traumatised by this to go into to much detail suffice it to say it was so traumatic but hotel and hospital staff were fantastic, it's a wonder that we have ever returned! but we have been back 4 times since and even survived hurricane Charlie!!! so it didn't put me off your child can be taken ill anywhere

A couple of years ago I took the kids to WDW for a few days before dropping them off with their dad for summer visitation. Our last day DD was cranky and miserable, finally bursting into tears at DTD. To my horror, the poor kid was burning up! I considered finding a clinic, but gave her some children's Tylenol and called her dad first. Luckily, he was able to get out of work early and pick her up; by the time he got to WDW the medicine had taken effect and she did fine after a day or two of rest. Strange - we never did find out what caused it.

We had really bad luck with illnesses and injuries during our trip to WDW last month. We were only there for 7 days. But, ds (14 mos) woke up vomiting in the middle of the night. He ended up having a terrible stonach flu that lasted a couple of days. Then I started with it the day after her had started. We spent 2 days in the room and one day trying to have fun, but it was mostly miserable because I was still so sick. I just called his ped to keep the updated on how he was doing and make sure he didn't become dehydrated. So, fortunately I didn't have to go to the walk-in clinic for that.

Then on our last day there (one of the few days ds and I were both feeling almost 100% healthy) ds fell and hit his head on one of the iron-legged benches outside of Crystal Palace. We were taken to the Centra Walk-in clinic. He got Dermabond instead of stitches. We had a long wait at the clinic and I did not enjoy our visit.

Our last trip (January 2001), my then 11 mo old dd broke out with a rash over her entire body. We had to go to Centra for that trip, too. It ended up just being a viral rash. But, they didn't seem to know much about those types of rashes in kids and freaked me out!! At first, they were telling me she might have the beginnings of chicken pox and that we wouldn't be able to fly home for x number of days.

Dh says no trip of ours is complete without a trip to a Dr's office! And, I'm beginning to think he's right! We've visited Dr's and emergencies on almost every one of our family vacations.

Last March my dd, 12 months at the time got sick, we had to take her to the ER, I thought it was an ear infection, but it was a throat infection , about 24 hours later we were able to go to the park.
