Who's bitter? I'm confused...

I just read through that entire thread and did not see ONE DVC member speak in a negative manner at all. All were courteous and not at all "unhappy" with the deals that are being sold by Disney to cash customers.

I'll add my voice -- I could care less. Good for them. Wish I could have received an upgrade when we were at ASM with 3 adults and a toddler squeezed in the room. But....that's what made me buy DVC.

Looking forward to my next trip.....even though it's soooo faaaar awaaaaay.

There was some negativity that I witnessed last week. I saw some stuff about hillbillies and value folks ruining the DVC resorts. Not sure if the boards were pulled by the moderators.

Look, its human instinct to feel sighted when someone pays less than you do for something - as is the case here where folks are paying $82/nite and get free dining and daily mousekeeping included.

One just needs to be constructive about the situation - I am am glad there are far more who are happy about those who will be getting plussed here.

Add me to the "not bitter" list. It's just like a cruise. Dont book an inside cabin if you absolutely must have a window and hope for an upgrade. It's nice when everything lines up, but you could end up stuck somewhere you really dont want to be.

I dont want to be stuck anywhere on vacation. I like to know where Im going and be excited about it.

None of the deals offered have ever beat my DVC when comparing Deluxe to Deluxe.

The Deluxe rates are very high and that is not going to change. That is why the Values are double booking. If we were cash guests, we would stay in Values also but DVC guarantees our vacation style does not change with the economy.

So after running the numbers again to see if Free Dining would work for us in October, it will not and we are sticking with using points and will pay oop for our Dining Plan which is a much better deal for us.

So how can I be bitter, when I will watch Wishes from the balcony of my brand new home in October?:woohoo: We've had almost 10 years of Deluxe vacations at Disney 2 to 3 times a year:wizard: Im happy for those that received the upgrades, especially the military families:grouphug:

That was 1 person if I recall. :stir:
There seems to be more bitterness from many of those that did not get the upgrade than DVC members. The ones that got "left behind".

Enjoy your magical upgrade:goodvibes

I'm certainly not bitter. In fact, I'm glad DVC sales is taking a proactive approach to selling DVC memberships. The people who are being offered these upgrades meet a certain profile that Disney believes make them candidates for a timeshare purchase.

Unless there's an unusual amount of breakage, which I don't think will necessarily be the case, there's really not a downside to current members. In fact, there are a few pluses:

More membership at my home resort = more members paying dues = less liklihood of my dues going up astronomically.

More sales = less existing units to be sold = need for more units to sell = new DVC construction = new places to stay on points

In both of those cases, the existing membership benefits.

After thinking about it, I'm not really bitter or angry. I just hope that daily housekeeping doesn't come out of our dues and make those dues go up, or that housekeeping quality takes a hit since they have to do so many more rooms daily than normal.

That's me too. The housekeeping thing is what got my alarm going off. But in the end, its fine, I love my DVC and I don't even want or like having daily housekeeping anymore so I am soundly over it!

I posted on that other thread trying to explain that there is snobbery and pettiness amongst many groups of posters, not just DVC members! I got over any "hey wait a minute" feelings days ago. I do know that some very nasty posts where DVC members (or maybe just good old pot stirrers) called some of these folks who got upgraded names were closed and then later deleted. But the memory of those posts lingers and people are rightly still upset about it. But I tried to explain that a few bad apples happen in all groups and that DVC members as a rule of thumb aren't snobs and are just like everyone else.

This whole thing has given a new platform for many old, tired out, dead horse, type arguments of:

Resort Snobbery
OKW and SSR are lesser resorts
DVC is a stupid thing to buy into

And a lot of the bitterness I saw was from ppl who didn't get the upgrade.

I feel sorriest for people who are paying rack at SSR and OKW to get free dining and now see people getting the same thing for hundreds a night less. Talk abot some rightful bitterness!

This same deal has been offered before and will likely be offered again. For the folks that got the upgrade I am thrilled for them. I have my right to have a human reaction to it but nobody has the right to name call and post hateful things. Sadly, some of those post by DVC members found their way around the boards and that is why this particular thread got started.

It will die down and Disney may very well sell a few contracts they woudln't have!

In August 2007, we were upgraded from 10 nights at POP with Free Dining to 10 days in an SSR 1 bedroom with Free Dining.

We took the upgrade, loved it, and bought DVC two months later. :thumbsup2

I think you illustrate the point beautifully!

Likely, Disney sees an opportunity to sell more points AND empty rooms out that are traditionally easy to re-fill. In essense, they get to "double dip" a bit, and have an opportunity to show off the DVC resorts, and maybe sell some points. I'd suspect that, as you illustrate, the last time(s) they've done this, it's been pretty successful...otherwise, I doubt they'd continue.

I say "Bully for those that got upgraded". Hope you enjoy your vacation!!

Bitter?? No. I am a little miffed about it, but I'll sleep just fine.

I am confused as to why they didn't upgrade the folks staying at the mods, then upgrade the values to the mods. It seems like they are more likely to buy DVC. That said, I'm sure Disney has done their research and knows more than I do.

MG

Likely for 2 reasons:

a) The logistics of trying to coordinate 2 rounds of emails and then the subsequent CSR "run" from guests taking advantage.

b) The values are probably easier to "re-fill"....meaning demand for those rooms is higher, making it easier for Disney to "double dip" and resell the vacated inventory.

I was thinking the same thing. If there is a LOT of demand for the value resorts and empty space elsewhere, it only makes sense for Disney to offer the free upgrades; there is probably little or no difference in the cost for housekeeping to clean room A at Pop Century vs. Studio B at SSR. Filling both = double the total income. And if sales are boosted for DVC, all the better. I wouldn't mind seeing some additional resorts to try someday, and I haven't even stayed @ a DVC one yet! :rotfl:

I have gotten to know a few of the lucky ones that got upgraded from values to SSR/OKW and I must say that even though the selection process by Disney to offer these upgrades was random, they sure did get some nice people taking them and some that were in dire need of some pixie dust.

So in the big schemes of things maybe the selection ended up not being so random after all, maybe they do make magic:wizard: at times.

Call me foolish or even Pollyanna but I choose to believe that is exactly what happened.

Just in starting a thread on the Resorts forum offering to help these newbies to SSR and OKW info, I have received so much more in return.

I know many of you do not visit the Resorts forum and at times it can be a scarey place :scared1: but if you feel inclined to offer some info about OKW and SSR come join us.

No, probably not a huge difference in time and effort, but each resort has its own housekeeping department and budget, and the owners of SSR and OKW pay exclusively (with the exception of CRO bookings that generate cash) for the housekeepers since there are no hotels attached. My only concern was that somehow the housekeepers will need to be paid to clean the upgraded rooms daily, when we keep maintenance fees down by not receiving daily housekeeping. I just hope they can offset the expense and not dip into members' dues. Oh and the only sour grapes I have about this whole deal is that I did book a package at a value resort and am using my points for a 1 bedroom at OKW and didn't get a PIN to upgrade!;) See what happens when I try to score a deal!

Somehow the housekeeping fee has to be offset, whether it is a DVC or non-DVC resort. I'm assuming a set amount is added to each resorts housekeeping column based on the number of CRO nights booked. This would have to hold true for a cash resort, as well as a DVC resort.

One of my co-workers got upgraded and I'm thrilled for her!!! She goes to Disney 2-3 time a year and her and her family had a very rough few years!! Someone sure did spread pixie dust on them!!! :wizard:

Also, as long a Disney keeps them coming my stock will do good!!!! Great Decision !!! Disney needs to keep people employeed and if they could book extra rooms by upgrading then that is great. Smart business decision.

I love my DVC 1 bedrooms regardless!!!

Plus don't forget that a lot of people are staying at the BLT which is leaving a lot of rooms open at SSR & OKW ---again, it was a smart business decision to fill those rooms and get more people to book the values.

You know, maybe some DVCers said some not-so-nice things when the upgrades first came out out of shock or disappointment. I certainly don't condone what was said to individuals or about guests in general who have been offered upgrades. It's certainly not the fault of the Value resort guests that Disney made a business decision to upgrade them again this year. I am not particularly happy with that business decision myself, but we should be used to it by now ;). Heck, I was even upgraded last year during free dining from POR to an SSR 1BR at check-in. I tried to refuse but it was made clear to me that I was going to be moved whether I liked it or not.

I have been reading these threads off and on and I think the DVCers have really been taking a beating. It doesn't matter how many of us say: "Good for you! We're glad you got an upgrade!" the same sub-set of posters continues to call us names including "ugly", "bitter", "snobs", "snippy", "classist", "hateful", "self-centered" and "superior". Somehow all the mean things that the DVCers said have been scrubbed away and the mean things that the non-DVCers not only remain but they continue to be said. I just don't get it.

Robin, rude comes in all forms, nonDVC and DVC included. Just ignore it and I figure the ones hating on DVCers are most likely jealous of those that got the upgrade. ;)

My sentiments exactly. I read through that thread and found most of it discusting. It almost sounds like they want us to be angry and jealous. Just like others have stated we bought DVC so we would know where we are staying. No surprises and no waiting by the phone to try to grab a discount. We love our DVC and don't sit and worry that our investment isn't paying off. We are thankful everyday that we were fortunate enough to be able to have such an opportunity. And we have never ever called anyone staying at a value resort a "hillbilly"

Same here. I didn't see that thread though,I guess. But we own at 3 DVC location so that I am POSITIVE we can stay at the resorts we want to stay at when we want to stay there. Before we bought DVC, we stayed either at the WL, AK, or sometimes the Contemporary. DVC was perfect for us once we finally figured it out. I should have purchased years earlier.

Maybe some of those who get the upgrades to SSR will figure it out, too. I'm sure Disney is counting on exactly that.

Although it has been said by others, let me assure you that a few days ago there were some very ugly things said here by some DVC owners towards value guests. I won't bother to repeat them, but once again I worry about the state of Chuck's delete finger. ;)

The reality is that some people will always find the need to post ugly and hateful things, but by assuming that they were never said (even when several of us have paraphrased what more than one poster wrote) it makes it appear that those guests who were targeted are now complaining over nothing.

I myself have been the target many times of hateful and ugly words here (and I know that my posts have not always been popular with some readers). I can assure you that while I am logical enough to realise that those ugly words reflect more on the writer than the target, they are difficult to forget. I don't blame those people for feeling hurt considering what was said about them. Just because those posts no longer exist doesn't mean that they didn't once exist.

Fortunately Sammie has created a thread where DVC owners can at least express their helpful and decent side to those who received an upgrade.

What a sweet and generous thing to do Sammie. I'm sure those that received the upgrades will appreciate your kindness. :thumbsup2

You know Robin I agree with you. I have to say, I was flabbergasted to learn somebody (I guess a DVC member) had used the term hillbilly and I feel bad because not only is that bad, but then we all get lumped in. But I do agree that we have taken a beating. I see a lot of bitterness all the way around on this issue. Frankly, I almost wish somebody would start a mug reuse/abuse or pool hopping thread so at least there will be somthing new to get the boards excited over!

I haven't seen anything hateful in several days from a DVC member. But for sure, I have seen some rather hateful things posted by people regarding DVC members and for that matter SSR and OKW in general. Sadly, hatefulness and silliness abounds on the boards, this is nothing new. And it will die down soon as always.

I'll admit that my first reaction was to be a bit peeved. I posted that and I got put in my place quickly. I certainly didn't call anybody a name I just pointed out why some of us were a bit miffed. Not at the upgraded guests but at Disney. But its a business decsion on their part that I can understand and I am over it.

Since then I have just tried to answer questions on Sammie's thread since OKW and SSR are the two DVC resorts I have stayed at the most.

Well I guess its just me, but I'm not in the least bitter about these upgrades, and really don't understand what's all the fuss is about. All of us "chose" to purchase our DVC resort. We can choose to pay cash for our stays, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of our DVC purchase?
