Who just watched the view? OMG.. Whoopie was funny! talking about people in scooters (who shouldn't be) taking up so much space at the parks and then NOT moving when you go to walk by and instead beeping their horns for you to get out of the way.. She also talked about the many carriages and how that also happens..
I am kind of glad she mentioned it.. I have been to WDW many times and found that yes, sometimes these people think they are the only ones in the park and want you to get out of their way.. Whoopie was annoyed! But, made sure to show the LOVE!

I don't know how Whoopie could know who deserves to be on a scooter or not.

She didn't say some one deserved it or not.

Folks Whoopie is a comedianne who gets paid to make fun out of lifes little annoyances. One of those annoyances are the "out of control" scooters at the world.

Every body has complained about being run over once in their life and I know I have grumbled about the triple baby carriages that are the size of 18 wheelers or my favorite the kids who look like they are freshmens in college yet are still in a stroller. I love it when the poor kids legs are so long they are trailing behind the stroller.

Does that mean people should not bring strollers or wheelchairs? No, it means its a funny annoyance that every one grumbles about.

Jeez. Stand down folks

I couldnt have said it better myself.. That was her point..

I have not seen the View today, so I cannot comment on what Whoopie said, but I will say this.

Things like this are NOT FUNNY to those of us who fight those comments every day of our lives!

I meet an appalling level of ignorance every day (I am a daily wheelchair user). Most of the comments are simple ignorant, some are entirely offensive. It is just frustrating to have people making fun of this "annoyance" (which is a little offensive to me, since I may get lumped into that category) on national television. As moderator of the disABILITIES forum, I can tell you I will spend the next couple days putting out fires from this...

You said, People in scooters who shouldnt be. That was the way I took it. However I read another thread more about what was said and I understand it better. Post 44 or something like that was where I responded. No need to get excited.

Exactly - there is where my defensive feeling about this came from.

I have yet to see someone on this board who admits to using a wheelchair or scooter (either in daily life or at Disney) who found the comments funny. Generally anyone who needs a scooter or wheelchair has found the comments rather ignorant and offensive. I have not seen the video (I will watch it online later), so I cannot comment on my own reaction yet.

I need a scooter to get around and what so often doesn't get mentioned is that we can not stop on a dime. Wheelchair, stroller, ECV, whatever need a little bit of time to bring it to a complete stop and avoid running up the back of your legs. Soooo..... if you see someone in such a device, give it a little room and please don't try to dash across the path. Just be courteous and we will try to do the same. :thumbsup2

What fires?

IMO she in no way said people in a wheel chair shouldn't be allowed in the parks, or people in a wheel chair don't deserve it.
So what fires.
You've never felt frustrated at elderly people who drive slow? or going to the bank on payday with only 1 teller open or the person who gets in the 15 items or less aisle with 5,347 items? or better yet, every year we get the Brazilian tour group rant (about a thousand of them)

Exactly what part of the dialogue was offensive? It was more on the rude behaviour of people and that is not ignorant. Disneyworld every day as a great collection of people who pass through the turnstile and check their manners at the door.

So I'll be the totally honest person on the boards I have been to the world and made room for wheelchair guest only to watch them run and yes, I mean run the fastpass machine at TSM, then hit the wheelchair once again and I have rolled my eyes in frustration.

I have had my heels trampled by school bus size strollers trying to race a little faster, I'd like to think most times I'm gracious and simply smile but would then there are days.....

I wouldn't expect them too. but in honesty, these boards are not known for objective opinions.

The emotions she raised have led to a series of posts all over the DISboards full of misinformation, anger, prejudice, and rudeness. There have been posts about how we (as people who need wheels to get around) should not be allowed on buses, park sidewalks, we should have to have our own lane, or not be allowed to exit the parks at certain times.

And I do not read the rants about the tour groups... Anger at an entire group of people because of the actions of the few is very frustrating.

And I did not say what Whoopie said was ignorant, but what some other people have posted now and before about people with disabilities, and what I have been told in person by others.

And thats commendable but you know they are an annual event, along with the envitable "Gays days" threads.

I for one know that you will always get the ignorant people posting and you're absolutely right, I shake my head too at the "seperate bus" idea, which also comes up all the time.
So I am very empathetic (spelling?) heck, I'm a minority that got into a fight with another poster because of a "those people" comment during the past election that lead to a 30 day ids time out.

But that was not the tone of Whoopies comments and no way could be construed as such. at least to me it didn't come across that way. I could be wrong.

I'm African American and comedians (Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy) make fun of our, shall we say idosyncrasies all the time and remember Ms. Goldberg is a comedianne.

I've only been able to watch parts of what she said (the full video is not online yet) but she did state that "most" of the people on these scooters "just eat too much" and are "lazy" and "should be walking."

This sounds like a pretty start judgment to me on who should be using the scooters... And that is VERY offensive.

Here is another direct quote where she judges who should be on the scooter and who should not use one:

"People who weigh 9000LBS, who should be walking"

Yep, incredibly offensive.

Oh WOW.. I didn't know my thread would start so much controversay.. I did not take Whoopies Comments as offensive, but I don't need to use a wheelchair or a scooter.. I took it as, she felt like the specific people that she encountered at WDW caused her a problem..

I am not ignorant or rude or offensive.. I look at every situation with an open mind.. However, I will tell you.. I have been at WDW and experienced ignorance and rudeness by just about every walk of life.. Like a PP said, its like manners have been checked at the door..

At the beginning of my thread, I said Whoopie was funny, and she was.. the way that she explained getting run over etc, and also as PP said she is a comedien and sometimes they are not politically correct and they do say things that are offensive.. I would venture to say that many of us have encountered some sort of issue at the world such as Whoopie was explaining about.. Just my opinion..

Yes, I did encounter rude people on scooters at Disney - several times. One even started yelling profanity at me.

What bothers me about what Whoopie said (I have seen a good part of the video online and read transcripts) is the gross generalizations.

"People who are 9000 lbs, who should be walking" - That is the part that is offensive. Judging who is disabled and who is not based on looks alone is a battle i fight every day of my life...

Yes, she should be frustrated by rude people. But making gross generalizations about the disabled community is less ok...
