Is whole milk readily available at the hotels and parks? DD will be 13 months on our trip and needs to drink whole milk. I've been looking at the restaurant menus, and most of them list 1% in the drink options. If it's not available, what have others done for their infants. I can't imagine how we would carry enough milk for a day with us in the heat of May.

Thanks.

We always had a mini fridge in the room and bought a small quart of milk and kept it there. One of my boys is lactose intolerant so we had to find him Lactaid milk to drink....that is a chore.

Call me a bad/casual mom, but I never thought a few days of 1% milk were going to cause any harm to DD. (But I am lucky and DD's never had any health problems.)

I'm fairly certain there's no whole milk in WDW - I remember white or chocolate being the only two choices at the food courts.

You can buy shelf-stable whole milk - I'm used to seeing it in juice-box sizes - and no have to worry about refridgeration. I've never tried it, but my SIL loves it in her tea! Maybe someone else can chime in with where in the Orlando area it can be found.

Good luck!

Ditto this - We traveled for DS's 1st birthday and I remember just giving him the highest milkfat milk they offered at the particular restaurant and had a carton of whole milk back at the room as well.

You're not a bad mom (or we both are:goodvibes ) !! I agree that a week of 1% milk won't do any harm.

To the OP, check with your pediatrician. I'm sure it'll be fine for your child as it was w/ mine. You can buy the "juice box" milk that doesn't need refrigeration. I think it also comes in larger sizes. But I really don't think it's necessary.

We found whole milk at several CS locations. Sometimes you have to ask. The poly had it in their cooler at Captain Hook's. Good luck. 1% is the general offering, but I think that's because Disney has been trying to lean down their kids menus.

We kept a carton of whole milk in the room and DS would drink that when we were in the room. When we were in the parks, I either let him drink the lowfat, or I had some of the Enfamil Toddler formula powder that he would drink (if you haven't used that before, try it out before you leave to make sure DD will drink it.) The Toddler formula was good for the plane too since we could get through security with it.

From what our pediatrician told us, it's not that the lowfat is BAD in itself for baby, it's that the baby needs the extra fat.

You will be fine with out whole milk for your vacation.

Heck, my ds (4 1/2 yo) doesn't drink milk at all-he has a dairy allergy. He is fine. He drinks a little soy milk/soy yogurt but that is it & he refused soy milk up until he was about 2.

My youngest I switched over to skim milk when she was a few months shy of 2.

We have found that most of the resort food court/shops have chugs of whole milk, and you can find it at various other food locations on property. We actually found that the least expensive whole milk on property was at Goofy's candy shop in Downtown Disney! Our DD is on the low end of the growth charts, so we still prefer to give her whole milk (often augmented with Carnation Instant Breakfast, though not as much on vacation anymore).

While it probably won't hurt her to drink lower fat milk for the trip (remeber - whole is only 4% milkfat, so 1% is still 1/4 the fat), you *can* find whole milk on property, so don't think you'll be limited to reduced fat.

I agree with everyone else. A week of 1% or 2% is fine. Young children need fat in their diets, but short periods of the lower fat milk won't harm them. Pediatricians don't want to see children under age 2 on low fat diets. It sounds like it shouldn't be a problem to find whole milk, but if you can't, don't sweat it.

My DD is very small (not even on the charts kind of small), and always has been. She's 4 1/2 and I still give her whole milk most of the time. When she was 2, we tried switching her to low fat milk at her pediatricians suggestion and she put on almost no weight in a 6 month period. When we saw the doc the next time, he told us to go back to "full fat everything". I have no problems giving her low fat milk on vacation when that's what's readily available.

You could always supplement the lower fat milk with ice cream. Your DD will be very happy with that substitution, I'm sure. :thumbsup2

I agree that in general, giving a 13 month old 1 or 2% milk for a trip isn't a big deal at all. I've done that many times over the years on trips.

But I do seem to remember buying whole milk in WDW... So once you're there just see what you can find in the fridge sections each place you go. And you could always ask, I'm sure they'd help you if they were able. :)

Way off topic here...but a month ago at our pediatrician appt. he said our ds (13 month) should only be drinking 16-18oz of milk. And that if he had a glass of calcium fortified oj or a slice of cheese or yogurt to reduce his milk intake...he said it was because kids are on milk for the calcium...

so i left and then wondered if it was just for calcium then why not low fat or skim...so next visit back i asked and his response was because of the electrolytes in the reduced fat milk are different and could mess with kidney function:confused3

Anyway...I just said ...uhhh ok...and left. I have never heard of that before and it seems to far out there it almost like hey did you make that up on the spot???

So just a totally off topic comment....

I will be there next month with a 13 month old DS as well. I'm staying at BWV - so I have a fridge and will have milk at the resort (for breakfast and dinner). I ordered groceries ahead to be delivered.

While in the parks, I do not plan on giving DS too much milk. Personally, I'm worried it will just be too hot, and not sit well in his stomach. I figure he'll get enough milk in the morning and evening (really, he needs about 16 oz per day, gets about 6 oz at breakfast and dinner, and then takes about 4 - 6 oz right before bed). During the day at the parks, I'll give him watered down juice or just cold water so that he gets enough fluids to stay hydrated.

I have looked at the shelf stable milk - I think Horizon sells it in Organic version. I think most of that is lower fat also (2% or so).

I understand your concern about whole milk thought, esp. because DS for us could stand to gain a bit more weight - but, I'd rather go the juice route that have a vomiting kid at WDW...

16-24 oz of milk per day recommended b/c you don't want milk replacing other healthy foods from the diet. And kids don't need milk at all to be healthy. They do need fat and whole milk is a source of fat. (it's not really a great source, but it is a source) and calcium. I've never heard of the electrolyte thing, and I do think he made it up! :) Now for a young baby, they don't do as well on cow's milk b/c of it sodium and protein load can put a strain on kidneys, but that is not really related to full fat or low fat milk....it's just that cow's milk is not suited to grow baby humans. Well, I guess low fat milk has more protein than full fat, but this is not really an issue for a baby over 12 months. HTH

My son never drank whole milk. He went from formula to 2% and then at 2 he went to 1%. Doctor said to wait a few more years to put him on skim. He drinks about 16 oz.-20 oz. a day which is what they recommend.

We did see whole milk at a few places in WDW but it was mainly 1%. It definitely will not hurt your child to drink 1% on vacation for a few days, so I wouldn't worry about it.
