I think its wonderful you rescued him but am I the only one thinking that this just may have been a case of a kitten who wandered from its stray cat mother? I see cats with their kittens all the time on the sides of roads when I travel upstate.

The vet that examined it felt the cuts and rashes were from hitting the pavement the OP posted. It doesn't look like a mama has been taking good care of that poor little baby (and she may have been hit by a car, who knows where the mama's go). The loose stools often start about day 4-5 after mama is done nursing, although kittens can get them for a number of reasons.
This is the time of year for wandering mama's and their babies though, that is for sure. In either scenerio, it was a great save.
The vet did say coccidia and some other kind of worm. There was one kind he said they can be born with and then something else he picked up (probably the tape worms...our cat Stitch had those when we adopted him too). He was just over a pound and the vet said he was still too young for his shots so that will be done whenever he's ready. Surprisingly they haven't tested for leukemia yet since we have other cats, so we are controlling their interactions...I'm guessing that will be done when they do the shots. Then he can have a break from the vet till it's neutering time.I'm not surprised at the worms or the fleas. If he has fleas, I'm betting tapeworms. Of course most of them have rounds, and I'd toss coccidia in there for good measure. Even the 'good' ones come to us complete with all of the above..but they usually have had full belly's so it's easier for them. I assume he tested ok for feluke since it looks like he has found his forever home LOL!
Ah, that makes me feel better. He is really getting lively and playful now. I just posted an update with a pic. of him on top of his scratching post:It's really hard to hit a vein in a kitten just over a pound.
This was meant to be. Either for you to keep or to make a special kitten for a friend of yours! We generally prefer to adopt adult cats (when fate doesn't intervene), but kittens sure are fun.

He's so funny; he knows how to get up but not how to get down! We generally prefer to adopt adult cats (when fate doesn't intervene), but kittens sure are fun.
