Whoah! We had to pay for lunch today! The Horror! 10/9/11 MR Anniv. Cruise TR UPDATED

Can't wait to read all about the trip! I also had sea legs for several days when I came back from my first and only cruise back in 2001. Love how you both analyzed your decision and decided to take the cruise - it's fun to not be sensible about some things (I'm not saying you weren't sensible, just fun to plan some things on the spur of the moment and sometimes those plans are the best vacations ever!)

I like the french fry analogy! It does make sense when thinking about the points. This looks like it will be a fun report, I can't wait to see all the food pictures! I like food :)

Hi Everyone!

I am sooooo sorry to leave you all hanging. I didn't think everyone was so very interested and I hadn't checked back here, just got carried away with helping people by replying to posts on the cruise board and the DL board. I'm flattered, honored, and genuinely touched by the comments above (and the two PMs asking me to "come back" to my trip report). WOW! You all are just too kind. I am honestly touched. Thank you.

So, I promise to offer you more fun, silliness, excitement, and sense of the quirkiness that you have enjoyed thus far! Deal? Okay, so, here we gooooo....

A few replies...

Welcome!

Gotta sub on here too... You're one of my faves here Dreams ;) Glad to hear it sounds like you had an awesome trip! Can't wait to hear the rest.
Okay, that was just too sweet! "... one of my faves...." I honestly had no clue someone around here enjoyed all my little postings. I just hope something I post helps someone. Thank you for your kind words!

Your trip sounds exactly like what we have planned for ours, except we're celebrating birthdays instead of an anniversary. We're sailing on the Wonder in a couple weeks, no kids. We're using our DVC points. DH will be turning 40 a couple weeks after we return and I will be 38 on the cruise. We're doing DL for his birthday.... Looking forward to reading more since your cruise sounds so similar to what we are planning for ours. It'll be like deja vu for me when I go! :rotfl:
Aww, I feel bad. I'm sorry I didn't get back here, I honestly didn't think people were going to follow. Have you left yet? Let me know and if you have not, I will answer all of your questions! I ran a search to try to find your cruise dates, but didn't find them. You mentioned this is a birthday celebration cruise for you. See that shot of the Wonder in Alaska up there a few posts? That cruise happened to overlap with my birthday! (It was not intended as a birthday cruise, but the perfect week happened to be the same as my birthday. You are going (already have??) LOVE it! Let me know if you haven't left yet, okay? Okay! :cake:

Uh oh. Where did this awesome trip reporter go??? I need food porn ASAP!
Aww, thanks! I'm here, I'm back! I will get you some food porn soon. Promise.

Aww, heck, it's the least I could do for the wait --- here you go ---

See those little chocolate things on the front, center plate, furthest to the right on the plate? Straight from heaven! Mmmm, mmmm, so good! Yum! And the chocolate dipped strawberries, simply delish!

(Hopefully, I'm a bit forgiven! :goodvibes)

I've got less than a week and need some new MR trip report info to help me pass the time 'till this weekend.
Ah! You are on the Wonder right now! So jealous! Lucky you! By the time you read this, welcome back! :goodvibes

I agree with you on trading spontaneity for the opportunity to have children! We tried for a long time to have biological kids, and finally decided adoption was right for us. Now we have 2 little beauties from Ukraine, just the family we always wanted.

Looking forward to more of your report!
Thanks for following (and waiting for me)! And, aww, so nice that you have your family now. Thank you for sharing.

I don't want to be a party pooper - but I had the dreaded "mal de debarquement" for two months afterwards! :scared1: ... The good news is that just when I thought I was going to be swaying forever, the sensation just kind of gradually went away. So there's hope yet!
Yep, that's it! And then one day I just noticed it was gone. And then --- a few days later, it was back. "What?" you ask? Read below for more details!

I do so wish we lived near the water - Colorado is a long way for a last minute trip (though I did that for a Canadian all inclusive train trip last spring :). Looking forward to a whole family trip (adult kids/grandkids) on the Magic on Dec 10 :) - 1st cruise for the family - first Disney for DH and me.
I can't imagine taking our parents, siblings, nieces, and nephew along with us! Our cruises have been our little escapes from the universe, just us, left to find adventure together. Laugh, explore, and relax together. Drive each other batty, be stuck at sea with one another, and - no, wait, that's not right! :upsidedow I hope you have a great time with everyone!

First of all I love love love this TR. It is so much fun to read. I will be on the Holiday 8 day MR cruise and I am so looking forward to it.

I also spent many years and many dollars trying to have a biological child. I ended up getting divorced so it worked out better in the long run becuase I have no ties with my crazy ex. Then several years later I too adopted my sons. Mine were adopted out of the local foster care system, not that I think there is a better method to adopt you have to pick what's best for you.

I am equally blessed to have been given our cruise as a gift, so while I am waiting so very (NOT) patiently for our cruise to come I am reading TRs. Again I love this one, you have a very similar personality to mine and my sister. So I get a good chuckle when I read your TR.
Aww, thanks for your kind words about my TR. Even moreso, thank you for sharing about our experience becoming a mom. I really appreciate. Such an intensely personal topic, and a difficult one to talk about often. Thank you. You are going to LOVE the Wonder!

Hurry up and post more! I can't stand it!
I'm so sorry! I'm back. I'm back. I'm back! Thanks for hanging in for me! :goodvibes

OOPs had to opne windows and posted the wrong post here. LOL! I am joining in...I hope the move went wel land you can find time to update us.
Oooh, now I have an accidental follower. That makes me giggle! Welcome!

Thanks for your interest! Oh, I would LOVE to have sea legs for days. Remember those seven days, I complained about above? Okay, it lasted for --- wait for it --- two and a half weeks! 18 days of swaying and rocking and ~~~~ at random moments. Unreal! And then, when I realized it had stopped, I happened to be at Disneyland for an evening. I went on ONE ride. Jungle Cruise. Oh, yeah, you guessed it. I got off Jungle Cruise, was walked towards Main Street and my entire surroundings went ~~~ WHOOSH ~~~. That was 10 days ago. And continues still. It's really unbelievable! Never even dawned on me that Jungle Cruise could bring it back! AHHHHHH! :scared1:

Where is Dreams?!? I think she's hanging over on the Disneyland boards too much! :lmao: Come back to us!
I'm back! I didn't realize I was missed! I'm here. Promise.

I like the french fry analogy! It does make sense when thinking about the points. This looks like it will be a fun report, I can't wait to see all the food pictures! I like food :)
The infamous french fries. They worked for us... and landed us with a cruise booked, for $95 (plus points), 30 days prior to sailing!

And that is EXACTLY where I am going to pick up with my next entry! Promise!

Thanks for hanging in there everyone! I will do my best to deliver. How could I do any less after all the kind comments you have all made. See you later today! :wizard:

Glad you've returned! Your dessert buffet pic from Palo has me thinking we may have to do dinner AND brunch!

Glad you've returned! Your dessert buffet pic from Palo has me thinking we may have to do dinner AND brunch!
Thanks! Oh, the brunch is wonderful! I highly recommend it. Anytime there is a post in which someone asks, "Brunch or Dinner at Palo?" I can never help on that one... impossible to choose. For $20/person it's an amazing experience: good food, wonderful service, and of course, incredible view.

And now, back to our adventure...

When we last left off, I had explained just how you end up booking a cruise one month prior to sailing, with no prior clue you were going. (Not recommended for obsessive compulsive planners!)

It was a reality:
:yay: It's official! We are going to spend a week on the Wonder for our anniversary! :yay:

So, there we were: 30 days until we were to depart on the Disney Wonder for seven days and nights in the Mexican Riviera. Let me emphasize that: 30 days until departure.

I read all the time posts about booking this and that at 75 days out. Questions about Palo and excursions and.... Allow me to tell you, it's all possible. Even booking 30 days out. (Of course your cruise and mileage may vary, but it can be done.)

I'm not really sure if anyone wants too much of the pre-trip, yeah, all 30 days, details, but in short, the sudden list-making began. Highlights? Well...
  • Can our fabulous friends watch our pup (our precious "child" who means the universe to us) while we're gone?
  • DH has to confirm his vacation time - this one becomes important! - which was pre-approved
  • Palo - brunch, dinner, any day, any time (We are talking 30 days out here!)
  • Spa?
  • Excursions (oh, yeah, wait, we aren't getting off the ship, umm, yeah, that was the plan....)
  • Uh oh, street sweeping takes place that week! What do we do with the car???
  • Stateroom selection - Do we like it? - Becomes a HUGE item!
  • How are we getting to and from the port?
  • AHHH! We're leaving on a cruise in 30 days!!!

Now I don't know how everyone else plans their vacations, but here's how we operate. We each have roles, and we know them well.

Me: I am the planner, the reservation-maker, the researcher, the one who talks to people :chat: :surfweb:

DH: He is sort of the approval committee, not in terms of "yes" or "no," but more in the sense of "I don't wanna" or "That sounds great!" He also keeps us on budget. Translation: I find fun and exciting ways to spend money and he figures out if we can spend the money I have planned to spend. :teacher:

Together, we make it happen. :boat:

The key about this cruise: DVC points. There is not a lot of extra money in our pockets at the moment. We aren't doing any excursions. We are cruising on points. We are within driving distance of the Port, so no air fare and no overnight pre-cruise hotel. It's a cruise with very little actual money allocated to it. And we can pull it off.

Thank you DVC points.

Now, one very important element in play on this trip: my mobility. Due to a foot injury from which I was still recovering, my mobility is a bit limited. Stairs are VERY difficult. Speed is impossible. I can only be on my feet for a short time. "Why on earth would you book a cruise, then?" Well, fair question. And our thought on that was as follows: If you are sitting at home on your couch watching TV and staying off your foot, you can be sitting in the Buena Vista theatre on the Disney Wonder watching a musical production and staying off your foot.

If you can walk from the car to a restaurant to sit and eat dinner, you can walk from a stateroom to a dining room to sit and eat a dinner.

If you can..., well, you get the idea. This was a huge factor in our trip. And a reason we wanted to select our stateroom very specifically... ummm, 30 days prior to sailing.

After staring and studying a map of the Wonder, we had to decide: Be near all of the adult areas or be near most of the dining areas. Or, be in the middle of the ship, not really super close to anything, but not far from anything either.

We opted for being near the adult areas, in a stateroom about 10 doors away from an elevator. Not perfect, but for an outside stateroom, given our options, it was pretty good. But somewhere in the back of my head... it wasn't quite where I wanted to be. So the next morning, I'm staring at the Wonder's floor plans and available staterooms and wondering what bothers me about our stateroom we picked. Deep inside I really want a verandah. We just didn't have the points for it. DH wanted to get an inside room (less points) and I wanted a verandah, so our outside stateroom was our compromise, but I really love taking pictures from the verandah, looking out at the ocean while we are cruising. While staring at the ship layout, I remind myself: You're on the ship! The rest is details. Of course, as we all know, the details matter. Even when we convince ourselves, or try to, that it's all okay....

And as I am trying to remind myself of that fact, DH calls from the office. He just got out of a meeting. With his boss. His boss who mentioned a big meeting that will be taking place in about four weeks. A meeting that he must be at. That he will be presenting at. An important meeting. Ummm.... :scared1: I ask him what exactly that means. He tells me he needs to talk to his boss after lunch and he'll keep me posted. Uh.... okay. I'll just try not to panic that our trip we just booked yesterday is completely in jeopardy now.....

So, I don't know what you do when you aren't panicking, but I make vacation plans! One of the first things on DH's wish list: Palo. Dinner, brunch, both. He doesn't ask for much, does he? (Did I mention 30 days out?) We agree that it's only $40 (plus tip) per meal for the two of us, it's our anniversary cruise, we would go out to dinner to celebrate if we were at home, so... it is completely affordable. So, the checking begins. If need be, for the next 30 days, I will check online 3x a day for a Palo available spot. And I begin while finding something to do to not panic. Nothing. Nothing. Checking, checking.... What can I say? It's DH's number one "wish" for our cruise. Checking...

I'm going to jump ahead a few days here. I checked and checked and checked for days.
And then one day, after a week of checking, there is was: A spot. Dinner. The very first night of the cruise. I triple blink at the screen. :surfweb: AH! That's an open ressie for Palo! CLICK!!! And :woohoo: we have a dinner reservation at Palo! It's a good day!

I call DH at work. I ask him, so... if you could have anything you want for dessert tonight, what would it be? He tells me, "I don't know. Carrot cake?" :sad2: What am I going to do with him? He is clearly not thinking cruise and, let's face it, how can he be thinking about anything else. I don't care if he is at work, buried, trying to get things done, we leave in three weeks on a cruise and it should be the only thing on his mind, right? Who's with me???

So I say, "How about a chocolate souffle?" DH: "That would be good." Me: "Well, how about for dinner in Palo in say, three weeks?" Then it hits him! The realization that we are going to be eating in Palo in the near future. :yay: He says, "Cool." (Translation: "Cool" is my DH's way of saying, "That's awesome!" "Fantastic!" "YAY!" After 20 years together, I know that "Cool," is sheer excitement. He knows Palo dinner is in our future and is excited. Like I said, it's a good day. :wizard:)

Okay, back to the day after we booked... After looking at then-non-available Palo reservations, I decide to continue my not-panicking effort by taking a quick peek at the excursions being offered. Then I remind myself, "We aren't getting off the ship. It's a vacation onboard the ship. No excursions." I make a mental note to check out the current safety situation in Cabo San Lucas. Just, you know, to look.

And I go back to making checklists while pretending not to panic about DH and his work. Hey I know! Let's check Palo again.

Yeah, 30 days. What in the world were we thinking?

Up Next: Seriously, though, what are we going to do if we aren't getting of the ship? :confused3 Oh and seriously, what are we going to do if his boss says he has to be there? Really. Seriously.

Until next time...

glad you are back. Glad to hear that you got Palo ressies for the first night. How did that work out? Isnt that one of the rotational dinners?
Loving the food porn. Its making me hungry.

Yay for getting Palo..I think I'm gonna try to get brunch on the Dram next trip.

Yes! So glad you're back! :woohoo:

I love the way you write. It's so entertaining and fun!

:lmao: When we were living in Long Beach, one of the things always on the top of our list before traveling was, "What day is street sweeping?" So glad we don't have to do that anymore!

I'm probably getting ahead of myself here, but i've been hearing different things about Palo Dinner and Brunch for tips. Is tips included in the price or isn't it? I'm trying to figure out how much cash to bring for situations like these (excursions, spa, etc) but wasn't sure if I need to bring cash for both the Palo Brunch and Dinner.
