I don't know if I can do this again tonight . . . :rolleyes1

Last night we went to this boutique that only does prom dresses/bridal things and the place is really nice . . .hundreds of prom dresses to look through . . .We only spent 20 minutes in there . . .because "everything is UGLY" :confused3 :rolleyes2 She didn't even try anything on . . .and I would pull something out and she'd hate it . . . :lmao:

So since I have to do it all over again tonight . . .can someone please either take my place or send us some pixie dust that not all the dresses will be ugly? :goodvibes :wizard:

:wizard: pixiedust:

I'm looking forward to doing all that with my girls; DH disagrees completely. He's ready to lock them up in a tower for the next 20 years.

I hope it goes easier tonight!

Has she looked through magazines to help decide what 'look' she's going for. That might help. She could show pictures to the salesladies and drastically reduce searching time!

I have little boys (two and three years old) so I'm kind of jealous of the whole "Prom Dress" shopping rite of passage thing (I dont know of many moms who go with their sons to pick out the perfect tux but I'm all excited for Little League :) ). I'm sorry its been a less than fun event. I hope that tonight goes better. :)

Hmm, I guess you didnt see my thread, Prom - a 4 letter word I dont want to hear etc. I have a ds and that is a whole other set of issues.

I feel for you! It's way behind me now but can still remember the frustration. The best advice I can give you is somehow get her to try a few on. Sometimes a dress doesn't look that great on the hanger once it's tried on it looks so different to them. Good Luck!

Is there any chance you could drop your DD and a friend at the mall for a couple hours on Saturday or Sunday to look? Then you could just approve the dress before she buys it.

I'm sorry that they are all "ugly". If you take a drive to LI you can check out Estelle's. It is a warehouse of dresses. I had to pick out a cocktail dress in December for a party, I wandered over to the prom dress section and wished I had a prom to go to. I went there for my prom dress years ago. Spent about an hour looking around, trying some on. As I was about to give up I saw my dream dress in a horrid color. The sales lady pointed me to where they had some other colors. I found it in a great color and my size so I was ecstatic. Then I found out it was on sale for like $89! Mom was happy too. :thumbsup2

But I can agree with your daughter. I saw this years "in" styles of prom dresses in magazines and personally I thought they were all ugly. Very un-prom dress like. Good luck shopping!

There should be a club for mothers with "Prom Syndrome". The mother of the girl my DS is taking to the Prom took her daughter shopping for her dress about a month ago. She asked me to pray for her ahead of time as to the fact that they rarely see eye to eye on buying clothes. It doesn't help that she is also 5'10" and very petite. She came back to school on Monday, and told me they had the best time. Picked her dress in the first specialty shop they went to. BUT...., they have had to go back twice for fittings. I almost died of shock when she told me she paid close to $300 for the dress.

My best friend's daughter who is also going to the Prom this year found, "the dress she just had to have", on the internet. Of course, this fantasy dress cost approx $600. After my friend passed out and regained consciousness, she told her to print the picture of the dress, and that they would try to match it. Took them two days of shopping, but finally found a dress very similar for $230.

I lived precariously through both of them, and very happy I am the mother to boys.

Ahh....boys!!! Now that is an entirely new thread. Boys and the Prom!!! ;)

I'll take your's if you'll take mine. She's 5'2" and a OO. That's right a OO, not a O (way too big, I guess if it's not skin tight, she doesn't want it!) and she's really picky. She had an idea for the winter formal and drove me crazy because she couldn't find what she wanted. Hello! When you are short and skinny, you have to wear what fits, not what you want to wear!

Good luck and hope that you only tear 1/2 of your hair out.

WUAS: I, too, am in CT and did/am doing the whole prom thing this year. Keep in mind this is DD's 4th prom dress, too. But, of course, this being HER senior year/prom, this dress had to be "special" (read: more expensive) and not just *any* beautiful dress would do. We found a neat dress shop (with the most hilarious owner/salespeople--we called them the dress nazis) that had a large selection. She fell in love with a dress and no other measured up after that. It was more than I would've liked to spend, but oh well. She does look beautiful in it though. Not sure where you are in CT, but if you want to let me know, I might have some suggestions for you.

Here's hoping your dd finds her perfect dress. :wizard: pixiedust:

I had fun going with DD17 to look at dresses! Our tastes are complete opposites and I thought we'd end up killing each other but we ended up having a great time.

We only went to 2 stores. The first store was where we almost got into it. She is 5'5" and weighs about 105. All of her clothes are size 0 or 00. She is also small in the bust area. She kept choosing dresses that she WANTED to be able to wear but they looked awful and she got depressed (so unusual for her - she's like Elle from Legally Blond - knows alot about fashion). I finally was very blunt with her and told her that she needed to only try on dresses that would flatter her figure.

At the second store (we were the only ones there and she had personalized service from the owners) we had a wonderful time and she found a dress that looked fantastic on her. It didn't come any smaller than a size 4 and needs major alterations. She was so happy with her choice that we spent an extra hour trying on all kinds of other dresses.......laughing at some, rolling our eyes at others ("ho" outfits, she called them) but she learned that all dresses are not for all girls.

Her choice was kinda expensive ($300) but she offered to pay half, which I declined and we really had alot of fun. I look forward to next year!

Well . . .we found a beautiful prom dress at the mall . . .of course, someone else may have the same exact dress at junior prom, but, DD was extremely excited about her find.

We purchased it at Windsor in the mall and it is really gorgeous. It is emerald green, a-line and she looks beautiful in it . . .we do have to bring it to be shortened though and taken in a bit in the top . . .She also found her dream shoes. All in all, it was a very pleasant shopping experience and not very expensive at all. Turns out, the prom dress was on sale . . .it rang up only $79.00 the tag said $159.00. :thumbsup2
