I was never crazy about flying and now with all those image scanners at airports (is a whole other thread) we have decided to drive instead. We drove down in Feb and are driving back down in August. It is not a bad drive from New England.. But our family/friends think were crazy! Who else loves to drive!

I drive for a living so it does not bother me to much plus by the time you get up early to arrive @ the airport because they recommened being there almost 2 hours before your flight and the wait @ the other end to get your luggage and rental car sometimes it is not that much shorter for us. I always like to have a car just in case. We are going this year but pulling our camper and staying @ the Fort. If you get used to the drive it is not so bad.

I hate to drive anywhere. We have to drive sometimes because we need to take more stuff then we can fly with (not to WDW, but other destinations).

I DO! I DO!:drive:my husband and i drive from Chicago at least 5 times a year we love it i can bring anything i want in the car as well as bringing anything back home i don't get stuck in an airport for hours if a flight is delayed
if i decided to leave early or stay an extra day no fees i bring all the luggage i want
we make the drive part of our trip i watch DVD's..read..talk stop when we want i can't wait till the end of april to drive again

Yep,,, and we drive from Chicago too! I have had 7 flights to fly back/forth from FL in the last 6 months due to family issues, and man, I am ready to drive again! SO tired of late flights, having luggage restrictions, getting a cab, got hit for late fees as I had to change 2 flights ( SW does not fly into Sarasota...) anyway...looking forward to NOT paying 2.50 for a bottle of water at the airport, having LEG ROOM while in my seat, not hurting my back trying to get my carry-on into what space is left above, screaming child ( no offense, I have kids , been there, but after 2 hours, even the headphones don't block it out) Flying is great for time, but if I ahve the 2 extra days to drive, I'm all for it..and now that one of our airports is the scanner....I like to come home with a little tan, not a radiation glow thank you very much!

You realize you have the right to decline a body scan right? You can opt for the standard pat down instead.

LOL i have children too but i forgot to mention the child who kicks the back of my seat for 2 hours

For us, driving is the way to go, we always joke that flying is for the soft people of the world.. We LOVE the ability to set our own schedule, what we bring and all else that goes with driving!!

Although DH has to stop a little more frequently now because of his back... we love the drive :drive: also. For us it is part of the excitement. We drive straight through from Ohio. We will be visiting this summer and I have been printing games and fun things to do in the van for weeks. We love to sing and laugh and find certain landmarks on the way down. I can't wait!!!

yep, I realize it...and for now book my flights out of Midway where I can walk thru the non-pat down normal scanner and my kids can do the same. See, the nice thing about driving is we don't have to make that choice of how to be "approved" to board...and I get to keep my shoes on too!:thumbsup2

I love driving! We drive from Indianapolis, and I love seeing "Ruby Falls" and the welcome to Kentucky, Tenn, Georgia and FLORIDA signs! Now, I do prefer the summer months for driving...I go every summer.
But it is more relaxing for me to drive, and pack the car with anything I could possibly want, than to stress out about packing the suitcases for a flight. We are flying next month though, for a quick 5 night stay with the out of town grown up kids.

I love to drive, but just haven't done it in a long time. Time is too valuable recently and 30 hours RT door-to-door vs 10 is a lot. Granted there are delays and such possible when flying...but I have been stuck many times in accidents or detours. There's always a chance of a break-down when driving as well and that's no fun out on the road. If you've got the time...go for it.

I love the drive to Disney!....from the airport in Orlando. ;)

Any idea of the cost to drive to DW? We are in Long Island NY

That's a wide-open question. Do you drive a Hummer or a Prius? Do you just consider gas cost or that plus maintenance, depreciation, etc?

IRS says .50/mile is the current rate for operating a vehicle so if you use that it would be $1,000 RT from NY:scared1:

That's about the same distance for me and driving a late-model Honda Odyssey minivan and only accounting for gas/maintenance it would be around $300. Plus extra meals, snacks, maybe staying overnight somewhere if you're not going to drive straight through. Doesn't take long to hit the cost of airfare for four if you do all that....

If it's beyond 4 - 5 hours I can fly their quicker then I could ever imagine driving, so no way would I drive to FL now would I enjoy it (I did once when I was 19, hated it and would never recommend it to anyone).

The IRS rate is based on total wear and tear on the vehicle, including fuel, oil, tire life, suspension, etc. I use this rate often when justifying flying or driving within my 4 - 5 hour personal threshold.

Driving for us. My kids are growing up too fast, so any chance I can get to be with them for an extended amount of time, and see some sights with them is worth it.
