Who is the liberal left?

Probably the opposite of the religious right.

What I want to know is...what about us folks in the middle??????? :confused3

:wave: ;) And I don't consider those fighting words. I am Liberal, and to the left of center, in politics only.

i consider the liberal left to be the group of people that have entirely liberal viewpoints. i don't think it's a bad thing, however, i get accused of being a member of the liberal left all the time and i am not (just ask buck naked, she will vouch for me ;) ). :rotfl:

seriously though. i am very libertarian on a lot of issues, and that pretty much disqualifies me from the liberal left.

caity.. Isn't that surprising about being Libertarian? The media considers us 'right-wingers' yet on DIS a lot of people seem to believe we are 'left-wingers'. I guess it is because we refuse to have our morals dictated to us by someone else (person or government).

it's so hard to classify libertarians as either left or right because we tend to have some beliefs that are more conservative and others that are more liberal.

i generally get classified as liberal here on the dis because i generally vote democrat (though i have voted for republicans before).

I'll vouch for caitycaity not being part of the liberal left ;)

I'm more libertarian than anything and I certainly don't consider myself part of either the left or the right.

::yes::
I'm more libertarian than anything else, but I often get called a liberal here for the same reasons.

I am Libertarian, and here on the DIS get tossed in with the religious right. :rotfl: I think it is our tendency in general to read one post that leans either to the right or left, and then assume the person is Republican or Democrat. If you're in the middle, or a bit of each side, it just confuses everyone.

Yes, I can most certainly vouch for you!!!

I think that the tendency with libertarians is to come down on the liberal side of social issues (meaning, they want as little government intervention as possible) and on the conservative side of fiscal issues (meaning that they tend to be anti-welfare and other social programs, as well as anti-regulation on industry). Seeing as how it's typically social issues that we discuss here, it's pretty easy to see why a true libertarian would be classified as "liberal", rather than conservative.

As to "who is the liberal left"...The liberal left tends to be:

Pro choice and pro sex-ed (as opposed to idiotic and inneffective "just say no" campaigns)
Pro equal human rights (be they for gays, women, or minorities)
Pro social responsibility (meaning they tend to be in favor of social programs to help the disadvantaged)
Pro seperation of church and state (no explanation needed)
Pro regulation (not trusting polluters, for example, to value the environment more than their bottom line)
Pro middle class (as opposed to pro-millionaires, and screw anybody that doesn't qualify)

We tend to look at government as a place where people can come together for the common good, rather than our own bank account balances. Yes, that also means we have no problem either paying taxes or asking that the wealthiest pay more, since it hurts them a lot less than it would hurt the middle or lower classes. Moderate taxes aren't a bad thing unless they're being wasted (and if you want to see waste, take a look at the last Republican authored transportation bill).

Thoughts?

If you are a conservative republican, a liberal is anyone else that doesn't think like you. :teeth:

Yep, I would have to say this describes my beliefs. Good definition.

That's interesting, because I believe in all of those things, and I'm nowhere near being a liberal. The difference is, it's a matter of degrees.

As usual, you're right on the money. Allow me to add a couple more;

The liberal left is not afraid of diversity. It embraces and encourages it.

The liberal left is proud of the ACLU. Like the right, the liberal left winces at some of the causes that the ACLU occasionally embraces, but unlike the right, the liberal left understands that the ACLU is protecting every American's rights as guaranteed by the Constitution and Bill of Rights, not merely the ones it agrees with.

The liberal left understands that in the ten commandments, it says "thou shall not kill". Not "thou shalt not kill just Americans", or "not valid when overseas", or "thou shall not kill except for people who may or may not be a threat who haven't actually attacked us yet". Just "thou shall not kill". Period.

There's quite a few more, these are just off the top of my head......
