Who IS Goofy 2011?

MJonesMBA2001 - Understand that the Goofy Will sell out quicker than the half.

Second. Do not be bullied into believing you must run back to back runs every weekend. As a first time goofy with only one marathon under your belt I would focus you on a marathon plan FIRST. I would add a couple back to backs only so you can get the feel of a dead leg run. Those would only be run on weekends where your long run has pull back, lower mileage. There are many out there who will say you must run back to back but in 5 Goofies I have run a total of 5 back to back long runs and I have improved my times dramatically.

More importantly, I would focus you on your midweek runs and attempt to create a little more leg strength as a result. The effort will produce speed and will keep you off the back of the pack.

I say take the plunge today if you are thinking about it at all; otherwise you will not get in.

I second what Charles said about back to backs.

I have NEVER done any back to backs for any of my 5 Goofy's. Even when I did 50 mile races(and trained for a 100 miler), I NEVER did any back to back long days.

You can train for the full and the Half will just be a bonus race ;)

Hi all,

I must be more than usually insane as I have not only signed up for the Goofy next year but will be flying over from the UK specially.

I'll probably be on my own so I hope that I'll be able to meet some DISers so I don't get too lonely.

I've run a few marathons and wondered how much people added to their usual times when running the Goofy. I have pbs of 1:37 and 3:34, what would you expect that I should aim for ?

Best Wishes to all,

Liam

Liam- that doesn't make you crazy at all. I have so far flown over from Chester (UK) to do the Minnie 15k, then my first half- the princess half last year and this year i completed the marathon! It was a wonderfully flat course so aim i would say aim high.
To be honest i've only run one other marathon, which was Boston so i can't really advise on timings.
Maybe see you there.

Ummm if i get my mum to sign up to the half, i could walk the 1/2 with her then run the full the next day right? That would make me a goofy?!?!?

Second, I can't imagine running the half and the full, and NOT having the medal and the shirt to walk around the parks in afterwards. That's kind of the point, right? The Goofy medal is your badge of honor, and I can't imagine just doing the half and the full and not having anything special to show for it. Plus, when you're already spending $270 on Disney races, what's another $40?

Charles is right. As my favorite sign from today's Houston marathon said, "Beer goes better with bling."

Second favorite sign from today: Worst Parade Ever. That has us laughing for a good 1/2 mile or more.

As for Half vs Goofy filling.

The 2010 Goofy(at 5000 runner limit filled on 3/18). It reopened with 2500 more spots(7500 total) and took until 8/27 to fill.

The Half took only until 4/28 to fill the 23,000 spots.

The Goofy is starting with 7500 spots this year so Half will definately fill much faster than the Goofy. Especially now it isn't the 5th Anniversary.

Count me in for the 2011 Goofy. It will be my first time. Thinking about going Dopey as well.

Have just been told about this site on one of the other forums I go on. A big hello from the UK:wave:

First of all a massive well done to everybody who did an event. I was very pleased with my marathon time(just over 4 hours) I'm seriously considering the Goofy 2011 - I don't think my girlfriend was too pleased when I announced this when I got home, but I don't think she was too surprised either:lmao:

One big problem I face is that I think I'd have to travel alone. Has anyone had any experience of travelling alone to such an event? I wouldn't normally even consider it but had such an amazing experience last week, everyone is so supportive and the atmosphere is something totally different to anything I've ever experienced before.

Does anyone else keep on doing long runs after their marathon runs? Everyone I speak to thinks I am mad as I gradually lessen the runs I do? I'm the only person I know that does it and was wondering if anyody else did this. I think it's a bit crazy going from running 18miles one week to next to nothing the next.

Anyway, this has already been a much larger message than I thought it would be. A big:thanks: to everybody who helped make the experience so amazing- can't believe it's over a week ago already:sad1:

See you all at the Goofy

I don't think you'd have too much problem traveling by yourself. Even when my wife and I go to the same race, we don't run together because our paces are so different. I end up chatting with people along the way and usually find someone to run with for most or all of the race. Plus, for the Goofy races, there are so many people running and the course tends to be fairly congested a lot of the time that you'll always have people around you. Just start talking and chance are someone will talk back to you. :)

As far as doing more long runs is concerned, I don't keep running 18 or 20-mile runs every week, but I try not to go too long without having some distance work. After Goofy, I ran about 16 this past weekend (13.1 for the Houston half and another few miles running my friends in for the marathon). I'll probably keep my mileage low for the next few weeks to rest and recover and then start getting ready for the spring season.

You can upgrade your registration to the Goofy, without any problem. You just need to fill out the paper form for the Goofy, and send it in along with a copy of your registration confirmation for the full, and ask for the upgrade. As long as the Goofy is not sold out, there are no problems. I did that this year when the Goofy re-opened and I decided to upgrade from the full.

Ooooh... this is one of those things that I would say to make sure you have in writing from someone on the race staff before assuming this will work this year. This is the only time I have ever heard of someone doing this and they may have been flexible since the Goofy reopened. I would hate for someone to assume that this will be the case for 2011 and be disappointed.

I'm not quite up for the Goofy yet, but I'm going for my first Mickey Medal. If it goes OK I'll be Goofy in 2012:goodvibes

Count me in! The first thing I told my wife at the finish when she asked how it was: "It was awesome! I had a blast and can't wait to do it again." We're even considering heading out west so I can get that coast-to-coast medal too. :)

I am going coast-to-coast. I completed the 1/2 in Jan. at WDW and convinced my husband that he needed to complete Disneyland with me in September. It will be his first and my 3rd 1/2. He was easily convinced so we will be there. :dance3: all smiles

I agree not quite sure if I am up for Goofy yet. Planning to do Mickey 2012 and then maybe Goofy in 2014. Taken it one race at a time. :wizard: Finish Disneyland 1/2 this September then start training for the full in 2012.

i'm contemplating going goofy in 2011...
oh - i guess i should introduce myself
Hi Everyone :goodvibes
I'm Beth (those who know me on facebook, know that's not exactly my first name, but i'll spare you the tongue twister)..

i'll be in the states for the podcast cruise in December, so since i'll have already made the very long trek, i figured i should hang around a while so that i can finally take part in marathon weeked...

so....i'm just not sure i'm ready for the goofy....

Thanks for your help, FFigawi. It's the thought of going out to eat by myself and things like that. I think I'd be fine during the races themselves. I think I'd find it hard during the evenings etc without company.

To be honest, I'm a bit torn about whether to return. I'd love to achieve the Goofy but I want my girlfriend there with me too:sad1: It's funny how as soon as you get home, you have every intension of returning without thinking through all of the practicalities.

I am considering the Goofy in 2011. I just picked up running last June, but I have always been active. I ran the Tower of Terror 13K in October, and my first half marathon in November (2:17). I had knee issues, but hopefully they are resolved. I have signed up for the Mercedes Half on Valentines Day, and the Princess Half in March. I plan on going for the coast to coast in September. I also plan on doing the RocknRoll Half in Nashville in April.

I have never ran a full marathon, and part of me thinks I'm crazy for even considering it. I turn 30 in August, and would like to complete my first full when I'm 30. I can't think of a better way to do it at Disney. But if I'm going all the way to Disney for another race, I'm going for three medals.

If I start training in April, is this something I can accomplish as long as there are no setbacks?

I would appreciate any encouragement.

Andrea - you should be fine doing the full in 2011 - especially if you have at 2:17 half and all those other races you are planning on doing through out the year.

I started running in June of 2007 and in January of 2008 decided that I wanted to do the full in 2009 - I started training in July and was able to finish the full in 5:44 (I wanted to be quicker but it is what it is) During that training I swore I was never doing a full again - fast forward to August of this year and I decided I wanted to go Goofy so I was back into the training. I just did it on my pace - not getting up early every Saturday morning - and I enjoyed it alot more.

I am hooked and am ready for Goofy 2011. I love running at Disney.

Well, I got the all important approval from DW. I am not 100% sure yet, but at this point I am planning on doing Goofy 2011, with Team in Training or Livestrong. I was going to wait until 2012, but I don't think I can wait that long before taking on this challenge.

I finally realized it wasn't going to get any cheaper :) so I'm in for the 4th time. My wife is doing the half with me this time. Getting a two bedroom so the grandparents can babysit.

Getting rid of that amount of money is my main motivation to train during the year.:rotfl:

I ran the 2010 Goofy and had a blast. I trained for it, using a typical marathon plan and inserted a Saturday lsd, half the distance to the Sunday long run. This was to prepare for the back-to-back runs for the Goofy. Despite the weather, it was awesome. It was also my first full marathon. I edited a video of our marathon adventures for those who have not been. Just goto: Youtube and type in "thegoofychallenge". My video should come up. It's called, 2010 Disney World Marathon Weekend. (I can't post the link as I don't have enough posts yet) For anyone doubting they can do it, believe me....if I can, you can! Just Believe! Thanks for reading.
