Never been and never had a great desire to take that long of a plane flight. The Carribbean appeals to me more. However if I did go, Disney would not be my choice of resorts nor this location.

Yep which I believe is the future for DVC, that all will be mixed use, Disney Resorts and DVC.

And if they follow the patterned rumored for the resort expansion at DL they may not need to invest a lot of capital to do it. Third party investors for the resort piece and DVC sales for the timeshare portion. Disney licenses or operates. Pretty neat business model.

We’ll add a small DVC Hawaii contract.

Right now, I can’t see us staying there for a week or longer because we like being in the middle of the action on Oahu. We like the location of the HGVC at the Hilton Hawaiian Village so we will continue to stay there. But I can see us staying at the new DVC location a few nights at the beginning or end of our Hawaii vacation for some relaxing resort time.

Why, I never! I don't even know you, so no, I will NOT go to Hawaii with you!

I'd like to go to Hawaii, but purchasing is not in my plan. Wife and I were in Hawaii when I was stationed there. I rode the subs and the wife stayed back home having fun.

We were just on the verge of selling our OKW when the Hawaii announcement came to the press.

We are now considering keeping our OKW in hopes of going to Hawaii using points at a DVC resort. Big risk, because I believe there will most likley be lots of competiton for stays in HI.

Last time we went to Hawaii (2005) I tried for months to get a timeshare exchange through II for any TS on any island and nothing came up. We wound up going to Maui to the Grand Wailea, bunch of points!

Still on the fence. May just sell in a year or two anyway.

Later,

Andy

I voted that I would go, but not purchase becaue I suspect the points and MF are going to be quite a bit higher than current properties. However, if I'm wrong, and the points and MF are in line with current resorts, I could see doing an add-on that would allow me to visit every other year.

I agree, nothing in Hawaii is cheap.

Since the vast majority of Disers are also easterners of course you prefer the Caribbean. Many, many west coasters treat Hawaii the same way. We don't visit the Caribbean because of the long flight but we go to Hawaii every year or close to it. However, DVC has to compete with Marriott, Hilton, Westin et al for our Hawaii trips because Hawaii is the reason to go (not an amusement park.) Without WDW we would never go to Orlando but we don't need Disney to attract us to Hawaii every year. And, just personal preference, Oahu is our least favorite island. We would choose Anaheim first if we ever buy into DVC.

Disney will market to the Asians & Australians big time for their Oahu DVC, probably with big incentives for first time buyers. Then Canadians & west coast USA. The add-ons from the current DVCers will be gravy.

I'm hoping we'll be able to stay there some time without buying in. It's on our list of places we want to go and a trip will fulfill our quest to visit all the DVC properties! Fun in the sun here we come!

For this East Coast family, the difference between HI and GCV is the transprtation cost. While we plan on buying a small number of points at GCV for a trip every 3 years or so, traveling to HI is just not cost effective. Last trip we took to CA was $199 round trip. We'll never see airfare like that for HI! :surfweb:

We may do it once just to have had the opportunity, maybe five nights at DVC then a week at the MVCI resort located there as well.

This is a great way to plan. We use our DVC points at WDW the same way, splitting our stay with the HGVC. Usually 4/4 or something similar. It gives us the onsite experience while also providing some more relaxing vacation time (or time for Universal/Seaworld etc.) prior to coming home.

I can see HI DVC being the same, maximizing our DVC & HGVC Pt. usage, splitting the stays between HGVC Hilton Hawaiian Village (or HGVC Grand Wikikian) and DVC HI. As an "East Coasster", this would ba a great way to spend 8-10 nights!

We went to Hawaii 25 years ago for our honeymoon, and loved it, vowing to one day return. We had just bought timeshare in NH, and that was our first trade. One huge draw back is the 12 hours on a plane, but I know we both dream of one day returning and now there is that "Disney" experience to go with it. I doubt we will buy points there as we already own 455 points, but we will visit.

We won't be doing an add-on as we recently added on at AKV, but DH and I are hoping to spend our 27th anniversary at the Hawaii DVC! :goodvibes

I think you've hit a lot of nails on the head here.

By and large, I think that those that already go to Hawaii on any kind of regular basis aren't going to be all that psyched about Disney in Hawaii. There will be exceptions of course. But for most, we go to Hawaii because its Hawaii. We aren't looking for a Disney like experience in Hawaii.

If we want it, we can already get comparable or superior service to Disney, and have options on where to stay on each island already.

I think Disney's primary market here is going to be people who will only try Hawaii because Disney is there (and possibly cruisers). Some of those people will take to Hawaii and love it, but others might be in for a surprise when they don't get the typical "Disney" experience.

Disney is also going to be in competition with established operators of all types, both in the timeshare/vacation club arena and the regular hotel/resort arena.

I'm not saying they will fail, but it's not going to be a slam dunk.

I have some more detailed thoughts here.

We would definitely buy enough points to go for one week every year in January so we could spend one week in Oahu and another week on a different island.

Since we go for two weeks anyway and always spend time in Waikiki this would be the best of both worlds for us, not including all the surf action on the North Shore every January.

First, I think the answer to wether to buy in Hawaii is a East Coast - West Coast thing. Living on the East Coast, I will take my chances at the 7 month mark. Now when and if they build a caribbean resort, I can see us doing an add-on.
