DH wants to do the Detroit Marathon in October. I am wondering how close Commerica Park is to Ford Field? How "safe" is the People Mover and downtown in general? What hotels are real close to Ford Field? How hard is driving in that area?

I'm not from the area... so bumping for you :)

Comerica Park is about 25 feet from Ford Field! The people mover is not very safe...we call it the "people mugger". Downtown is okay in the daylight hours, Greektown is very safe most of the time (lots of police). The Comerica Park/ Fox theater area is safe as well. The only hotel worth staying at in Detroit Downtown is the Ponchartrain or Anthenium in Greektown, both very expensive. There are some hotels south of Detroit off of I-75 like the ones in Southgate ( Holiday Inn, Ramada etc.) easy on/ off access to the freeway. Driving in Downtown Detroit is extremely difficult, my husband is a sales rep in the area if you need detailed directions just PM us.

Thanks for the info!! How close to Ford Field is The Anthenium? Is it walkable? Thanks again!

I doubt I would walk between Greektown (Athenium) and Ford Field even in broad daylight. Take a cab! There is also a Marriott at the Renaissance Center and a Courtyard across the street from the ren cen.

Driving in Detroit during the day and rush hour can be pretty bad. Most of the other times, as long as there are no games or big events, it's pretty painless. I go down to something or other at least once a month.

If you have a car you can always stay in Windsor, Canada and drive over. Granted, you have to go through customs which can take 15 minutes or an hour (depending) but your money is worth %30 more and there are 3-4 decent hotels right downtown. It is also a much safer city. There is the Casino Windsor Hotel, Hilton and Journey's End Suites.

My gf lives right on the detroit/warren border.
When there are times I visit but cant stay at her place I usually stay at the Residence Inn in Madison Heights which is just up I-75 about 10min from Downtown Detroit. There is also a Courtyard by Marriott that is nice too just up the road from the Residence Inn.
