Who is Amanda Bynes?

I keep seeing her on my TV, but I've never heard of her. I just googled her and apparently she had a supporting roll in Hairspray, which I saw, and then there's a bunch of stuff I've never heard of.

Troubling story, but with all the major world events that have happened recently, this is what the cable news stations are talking about??

She had her own cable show as a kid called "The Amanda Bynes Show". My dd's watched it and even I did with them. She was very talented.

I guess it is shock & sadness to her fans that she has spiraled so out of control.

ETA...My dd's are 16 and 22.

She was on All That, then The Amanda Show on Nickelodeon. She went on to be in movies like What A Girl Wants, She's the Man, and Hairspray. She started acting funny when she made a big to-do about "retiring" from acting. I used to be a fan of hers, but now I just feel sorry for her.

I feel sorry for her too. They're saying she has schizophrenia. It's sad it's been untreated for so long. She almost really hurt herself.

If it is schizophrenia, then it has nothing to do with her behaviour. It is her brain chemicals that are out of whack. She would be a good poster child for schizophrenia. People are interested in her and what happens to her. With the proper medication, she could be a functioning member of society and an example for other schizophrenics.

I hope she gets the help she so desperately needs and gets her life back on track.

What really disturbs me is the medical info that is getting out there. Details about her day, what she said and what she did. To be so cavalier about someones privacy and medical issues is disgusting. I really hope they find out who is releasing this info and go after him or her to the fullest extent of the law.

I agree that the celebrity coverage is a overkill, but she's no Kardashian where people ask "what is she famous for?" She's a pretty well known actress with lots of tv/movie exposure. I watched her tv sitcom "what I like about you" on WB. It was on for four years. She was very famous for about 12 years or so.

WOW! I hadn't heard about any of this. I was a 90's kid/teen (I'm a year older than Amanda) and enjoyed her on All That and The Amanda Show. She used to have her own web site she seemed her run herself (this was ages ago) and seemed very down to earth. She was a Hanson fan, like me, so I thought that was neat. How sad! I hope she gets proper treatment and gets better. I always predicted she'd be one of those child stars who would grow up just fine.

My kids (ages 21 20 and 17) used to watch her on "The Amanda Show" and "All That" when they were kids. She's a mess these days!!!

My kids are 18 and 20. They also watched her on The Amanda Show and All That. We were talking about how we still quote some of the lines from the shows from time to time. She was a cute, funny, silly girl. I'm so sad for how she's turned out.

My girls loved her from The Amanda show and What I Like about You. I feel really bad for her. It's obvious she has serious mental issues and I really hope that she now gets the help she needs, gets on meds and stays on them.

I think we have different ideas of what "very famous" is.

I really have no idea why her or Lindsay Lohan are considered news but then again I hate any form of celebrity gossip.

If these people want to live reckless lives and die young go right ahead, I don't care. I find it more pathetic than sad.

I find it so sad, she was very talented, and I hope she is able to turn things around, and get whatever help she needs. What a Girl Wants is one of my favorite guilty mom pleasures (I have been known to watch it without my dd around).
