Who Invited My Mother In Law? A Moderately Deluxe TR All New X 3 & PTR Link 2/3 !!

I know that there were times when you mother-in-law made you want to tear your hair out...or maybe her hair out...but it sounds like she really did have a good time with ya'll. Like you said, other people have different touring styles and different ways of expressing themselves. You can take pride in the fact that she is now going on and on about how she enjoyed the trip.

Don't you just love it when the characters come over to the kids during the parade?! That, along with the odd hanging shutters, are the things that Disney does best.

loved the update and reflection on traveling with your MIL. Glad that you have decided that it wasn't totally horrible - I too have had a similar problem of high expectations and when I look back I think my imagination was more of the problem than the people we were traveling with.

Another great update!

You are a saint for wanting to tap ravel with your MIL again!

Okay so I was halfway through writing a comment when a power cut meant my computer just automatically shut itself down.

Means I have an opportunity to figure out how to work the phone app!

Love Maddies food choice and am glad she enjoyed her meal.

Am glad you learnt from the experience of having your MiL with you on the trip and it hasn't put you off planning a future big family trip...don't think I could ever plan a big family trip! Too much hard work!!

Great parade pics and I love how your Jasmine got a hug from Genie :)

I feel like we might have been in line for Jasmine & Aladdin when you walked by...or at least close to it. As we were in Ariel's 2nd last set of the day, and that was right after Aladdins....so weird...god knows how many times we crossed paths without realizing.

I love Tortuga Tavern! They've got some delicious food, and back in Jan we got some fantastic non-alcoholic "sangria" there. Delicious! Love the update, I do love me some Disney parades, and YAY my boy! Baha :rotfl: We would have gone to see him right after that (well, after Ariel)

I'm excited to hear about the meet & greets!

Quesadillas!! Yum!! Your daughter has good food taste! hahaha :)
She looks like she is having the time of her life!! I'm so glad she is able to experience this as a little girl! I didn't get to go to Disney until I was 22; it's still magical, but I'm sure it's soooooo much more when your are a little girl! She'll remember these memories forever!

Can't wait to see pictures of her with some more characters!
I'm also glad that things turned out OK with your MIL!!:thumbsup2

I'm glad all your feelings toward the MiL portion of your trip aren't too terrible! At least yall were able to have some fun and she enjoyed herself.

This Liberty Square information is completely fascinating to me! I had no idea about any of it. Good grief... seriously, only in Disney, you're so right about that! Thanks for sharing!

OH EUGENE. I don't know of you realize this but that picture is just PERFECT. Eugene and Rapunzel and Eric and Ariel are THE BEST EVER. Okay sorry.

My mom is pretty much the same. The other day I mentioned that we might have found a church we'd like to try out near the new house (DH isn't terribly into religion so this is a big step) and for the next 15 minutes I had to hear her go on and on about how we need to go to church. :sad2: She drives me crazy sometimes. :lmao:

I went through the same thing with my DH. And that sounds exactly like something my mom would do!:rotfl2: You know what the scariest part is though? As I get older I find myself becoming more and more like her!:scared1::lmao:

I love the update! I love that the Genie came over to Maddie!

I liked your post about your MiL too. It's nice to know that she did recognize the hard work you put into the trip and enjoyed her time even if she didn't always behave that way. And good for you that you can look back and remember good things as well as the not so good.

I think your plan for the 60th birthday trip of meals together and then time apart is perfect. It's like I told my family this trip, two families can not spend all their time together. Everyone wants to do different things so you end up doing nothing! And when everyone knows that up front it helps eliminate hurt feelings or confusion.

Can't wait to read more. I so hope Maddie got to meet Jasmine!

Shannon, great update! I have lots of comments but will post tomorrow.

I had no idea there were cheese quesadillas in the MK, they are Everett's favorite too, so we might be eating a meal at the tortuga tavern too! Thanks for the tip! :thumbsup2

I had no idea about the shutters hanging crooked, and truthfully I never noticed. That is such a cool detail and how awesome that the CM gave you all that info!

We had a good time watching the parade on our last trip, so I'm sure we'll do it again (even thought I find it a little boring  ). The pics of Maddie with the Genie are very cute, what a fun interaction!

In the last few months I’ve had the chance to reflect on the vacation. While MiL frustrated me on occasion, and actually made me out right mad on some others, I’d probably let her join us again. I honestly feel as though I went into the trip with expectations that were too high. My MiL is not a demonstrative person, so doesn’t easily share her feelings. Yet I still expected that she’d be just like I remembered my loving and cuddly grandma was when she took me to WDW for the first time. That’s just not really MiL’s style. And, since we’ve been back she’d said several times how much she enjoyed the trip. She tells everyone that she meets that the only way to do WDW is on the Dining Plan like her daughter in law does, and that she can’t wait until I plan the trip for her whole family to celebrate her 60th. (I told her that I’d love to plan the trip, and that I think the best plan is for everyone to eat breakfast and dinner together, and go our separate ways during the day. She agrees :thumbsup2). So while the trip wasn’t perfect, maybe it wasn’t that bad either. Our learning curve was just a little steeper than I had hoped.

Once MiL left, we found a place in Liberty Square to watch the parade. A very nice family offered to let Maddie stand at the rope with their kids so that she could see the parade. (This was the second time this happened, and each time it renewed my faith in humanity a little bit). While we waited for the parade to start, Bryan noticed that the shutters on the buildings in Liberty Square are hung crooked. He asked the closest CM why, but she had no idea. I decided to pop into the Heritage House gift shop to see if anyone there could help.

The CM working at Heritage House was a wealth of information. I could have talked to him all day! According to him, Liberty Square is based on colonial America (mostly Philadelphia) and at that time shutters where hung with leather straps. Since the leather would stretch, shutters were often hanging askew. He went on to say that there are no bathrooms in Liberty Square proper (no indoor plumbing in the colonies), and encouraged us to check out Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe (and even though the 2 p’s and e bother me, we did before the trip was over). He said that the Christmas Shop is divided into 3 areas representing 3 shops common to the time. We were encouraged to check out the music shop area of the store where he said we’d find an advertisement for music lessons. After doing that, we were supposed to look at the name of the ice cream kiosk behind Heritage House. Even though we didn’t go into the Christmas Shop until the last day of the trip, I won’t keep you in suspense. The music teacher offering lessons in Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe is Ichabod Crane, and the ice cream stand is Sleepy Hollow Refreshments. I loved that CM! Unfortunately, the Hall of Presidents had just let out and a few people wandered in so I didn’t get to talk to him anymore. We did share the info with the original CM that we’d asked and she seemed really glad to know! Only at Disney people.

The parade started and was just as cute as usual. The highlight for Maddie had to be when the gang from Aladdin walked by. Jafar pointed and stared our little Jasmine down, and the Genie came over for a hug from an old friend. And this my friends is why we’re never going to be able to skip a parade with Maddie around. Darn you Disney! Some things you just do too well!

You have a seriously amazing attitude about your MIL, especially considering some of the crap she pulled on you guys and some of the things she said/did. I think it is really admirable how you took the situation and learned from it, rather than sitting around and stewing (not that I'd do that, oh no no no :rotfl:) Good for you. :cool1:

I am a history nerd and THAT IS SO AWESOME ABOUT THE SHUTTERS!!! I love it!! I love that you went in and talked to someone all about it. I did realize that Liberty Square was probably supposed to be Philly, considering they have a Liberty Bell replica, but how nice to have that confirmation.

I had NO IDEA there were no bathrooms in Liberty Square because there were no public toilets in colonial America. That's an amazing fact!!

Love the genie coming and hugging your cutie. The Disney character interactions are just second to none.

Awesome update!!!

Great update!! I love how your pictures are coming out (especially the indoor ones).

I LOVE the afternoon parade at MK! I really wish I could see it more often on my trips - but that's usually prime get-in-line-for-rides time and I'm outvoted :upsidedow

:cool1: I'm all caught up!!!

I have so enjoyed the BBB and parade updates. Love the Jasmine costume and the attention at the parade. The PP photographers did a great job at both the BBB and the photo shoot! Very cool!

Great update!

Thanks!

Your reflection back upon the trip with MIL is very admirable. I think many people (myself included) would just remember the bad & say never again! I'm glad you were able to see the positives and that you would go again with her. And it sounds like she thinks a lot of your Disney planning skills! :thumbsup2 I'm glad she agreed to the plan for her 60th!

I think I needed some time to get over the things that she did, but I'm not willing to write her off yet. It does make me feel good that she appreciates my planning even if she acted like I was crazy on the trip! ;) I think that plan for her 60th is the only way we'll come out alive-my SiL is worse!

What fun interactions during the parade! :goodvibes Maybe if Reid had an experience like that he would actually want to watch the parades. :rotfl2:

I really hope she got to meet Jasmine that day! She's just too cute dressed up like her!

That's the first time that Maddie's been singled out during one of the parades, but it was great. She just loves them, so Bryan and I suffer through.

I'm going to try to update again tomorrow, so you won't be in suspense long!

Maddie really looked so happy even at lunch. I love the BBB even though we have yet to experience it personally. One day, I will have a daughter! Sorry her shoe broke, but I am glad she was able to exchange them. The dining plan is the only way to do WDW, like her DIL does. That is the best thing your MIL has said so far. I agree. Unless we are staying off property or do not need park tickets (AP), I do not think I would ever go without one.

She pretty much smiled like that the whole day. It was one of our best days in WDW ever. I so hope that you get your little girl, you would absolutely love doing all those girly things. The BBB is amazing, I can't say enough good things about it.

I was so happy to hear that MiL has been singing the praises of my Disney skills. That's so like her, she won't say anything in the moment but later will say wonderful things to others. My mom is like that too though, so I'm used to it.

I could not agree more on having big parties meet only for meals. It is so hard to get anything done in big parties. Every time we tried to stay with a big group, we left at the end of the night thinking we barely did anything that day. Now, I leave when the big group refuses to move.

I think that's the only way to do it. It was hard enough just bringing MiL into the group, I think we'd all go crazy when we add 9 or 10 more people to the mix. I'm excited for the challenge of planning a Magical Gathering!

I love that the Genie came up to greet Maddie. If stuff like that ever happened to us, we would watch more parades.

I hope one of the meet and greets is with Jasmine. That line better re-open.

That's the first time Maddie's ever had any one on one interaction during a parade, but it was awesome! She really ate it up. If you can believe it though, it didn't turn out to be one of her most memorable moments because the whole day was that special!

I'm going to try to update tomorrow because on of my BFFs who lives in Portland is visiting at the end of the week. I don't want to keep anyone in suspense! :rotfl:

Maddie looks like she was having an absolutely wonderful day!!! :goodvibes

She had the best day ever! It was such a fun day for all of us, great memories.

I'm glad that you were able to see the positives in bringing your MIL along in the future. It really does sound like she had a wonderful time on the trip she took with you, and sometimes people just have very different touring styles that have difficulty meshing. I think the "meals then separate ways for a bit" style may be a great plan for you guys in the future!

In the long run, I figure that there's no reason to hold a grudge. WDW is both of our favorite places to vacation, so it stands to reason that this won't be the last time we go together.

I think that for the big family trip, only meals together will be crucial. I think you're right-it's probably going to be the plan for us!

I'm glad that your MiL has fond memories of the trip. Even though she might have verbalized her inner monologue a few too many times. :rotfl: You're going to have that when you travel with extended family. Believe me, we vacation with my parents every few of years and take trips with my in-laws on even number years. You're not used to being around them all the time, and they're going to get on your nerves a little bit. You just have to take the good with the bad and focus on the bright spots. That's what makes you want to spend your vacation time with them again in the future. Well, either that, or insanity. :crazy2:

She was definitely lacking a filter on the trip, but it's nice to hear that she appreciated the planning that I did. I don't know how you do that! Nice things that I said aside, I think that our next trip will probably be just the 3 of us!

I always love the little touches they put into the decorations and scenery in the parks. It seems like you can never go there without seeing something new or learning something new about it.

I was so glad that I asked! That CM told me so much cool stuff. The details at WDW continue to blow me away. It's the little things like those shutters and that CM who could shed light on them that keep me coming back time and again.

What a great update! Those were very kind words you used when describing the trip while your MIL was with you and I love the plan you have in place for her 60th. It's so hard to vacation with other's no matter how much you love them and it's good to have your own time alone...I always find that helps!

Thank you! I know that MiL loves WDW as much as we do, so future trips are inevitable. I just had to let it go.

For her 60th there will be about 15 of us, so only doing meals is the only way that I think it will work. And, that way each family can have their own time together. It seems that you and your sister strike a really good balance on your trips together, I'll have to use that as my inspiration!

Maddie makes a beautiful Jasmine and I love how Genie came over to her! I love those kind of memories....when I think back to our own, I can hardly believe how many years have passed in between.

That was such a cool moment with Genie, I'll remember that for a long time. Having the chance to make these memories is so important to me, I know that this age won't be here for long.

A fun and reflective update!

Thanks!

Maddie had the greatest smile at the restaurant! Food must have been good.

Well, she really really loves cheese quesedillas. :rotfl: I think that having a day devoted to only her helped too though. ;)

You have major props coming your way to want to travel with your MIL again. Knowing how she is, helps with understanding what she does.

For future trips, I do think a meal as a group is a good idea, and then doing your own thing is what's gonna keep everyone sane!:rotfl2:

I'm going to have to go into future trips with a much different mind set. I think that while she was a pain in the rear on several occasions, I might have set my expectations too high. That's likely what made me so irritated at her at first. I'll know better for next time.

I love that parade, and Genie was probably the cherry on top!

That parade is one of the only ones that I don't really mind. Maddie loves it, so we try to stop and see it at least once during each trip. The Genie singling her out was such a great moment! She'll make sure that we see more parades in the future.

I love this update! Tortuga Tavern is one of my favorites, too! Can't wait to see Little Jasmine ;) with the characters!

We really like it too! The food is really good for a counter service!

I also love that you are able to find the positives in the trip! You are one nice lady!! And based on my earlier plans. . .the desserts at 'Ohana are now safe from being thrown at people! :rotfl2: Just kidding--it really is great that you can do that and plan another trip. I like your idea for your trip!

Thank you! There is really no reason to hold onto those hurt feelings. We'll both be going to WDW in the future, it's silly to think that we won't go back together. For the big 60th trip though, having our own time will be key. Maybe then we can enjoy the bread pudding instead of saving it for ammo. :rotfl:

Great update! I love the new info about liberty square! True Disney - its all in the tiny details! :) It's awesome that Genie came to visit Maddie during the parade. What a special day for her!

Isn't that cool? DH is the one who noticed the shutters, but I'm so glad that we took the time to ask a knowledgeable CM. Those detail are the reason that I keep going back to WDW, there's literally always something new to see and learn! I HAVE to take one of the tours some day. That stuff fascinates me.

The Genie interaction was awesome. Maddie was on cloud nine all day.

Great insight to your MIL. (I'm still not inviting mine. ;))

Good luck with planning the big family trip. It will be a bit of a slippery slope for you if you are perceived as "taking control" or "responsible for all of the planning, therefore responsible for evyerone else's good time". However, your plan sounds like a great one. Meet for breakfast and dinner and go your own way in between. Now there is a TR i am looking forward to. ;)

I really did want to scalp her at times! :rotfl: But, you're right. I am proud that she's bragging about me and that she did have a great time.

Don't you just love it when the characters come over to the kids during the parade?! That, along with the odd hanging shutters, are the things that Disney does best.

That was the first time that has happened to Maddie, but it was really special! The shutters detail was awesome. It's those little things that keep you coming back time and again!

loved the update and reflection on traveling with your MIL. Glad that you have decided that it wasn't totally horrible - I too have had a similar problem of high expectations and when I look back I think my imagination was more of the problem than the people we were traveling with.

Thank you! I think that was likely my down fall as well. I should know by now that preconceived notions are always going to end up making me upset. I now know how she is on trips, and I won't make that mistake again. :thumbsup2

Another great update!

You are a saint for wanting to tap ravel with your MIL again!

Thank you! I'm probably more glutton for punishment than saint though! :rotfl:

Okay so I was halfway through writing a comment when a power cut meant my computer just automatically shut itself down.

Means I have an opportunity to figure out how to work the phone app!

Love Maddies food choice and am glad she enjoyed her meal.

Am glad you learnt from the experience of having your MiL with you on the trip and it hasn't put you off planning a future big family trip...don't think I could ever plan a big family trip! Too much hard work!!

Great parade pics and I love how your Jasmine got a hug from Genie :)

Looks like the app worked well! I'll have to check that out!

The big family trip will be a lot of work, but it's my favorite kind of work! I love to plan WDW vacations!

I loved that moment with the Genie too! It was so sweet!

I feel like we might have been in line for Jasmine & Aladdin when you walked by...or at least close to it. As we were in Ariel's 2nd last set of the day, and that was right after Aladdins....so weird...god knows how many times we crossed paths without realizing.

That's crazy! Wait until you read the next update, we were probably 10 feet from each other all evening!

I'll have to look for that sangria next time, that sounds delish! We always go to Tortuga Tavern because Maddie really loves quesedillas :rotfl:

I had to post the picture of Naveen for you!

Great update! I just love a Disney Parade!!!!

Thank you! Bryan and I aren't parade people, but Maddie sure is. If we have more moments like those, we will likely be converted!

Quesadillas!! Yum!! Your daughter has good food taste! hahaha :)

She loves them! You should check out Tortuga Tavern, the taco salad was really good too!

She looks like she is having the time of her life!! I'm so glad she is able to experience this as a little girl! I didn't get to go to Disney until I was 22; it's still magical, but I'm sure it's soooooo much more when your are a little girl! She'll remember these memories forever!

I'm so glad that we have the chance to take her now. I only went twice when I was a little girl, and I wish that I had the chance to go more. She was having the best day ever! and those days are priceless.

Can't wait to see pictures of her with some more characters!
I'm also glad that things turned out OK with your MIL!!

Thank you!

I hope to get another update done tomorrow, and there will be characters!!

I'm glad all your feelings toward the MiL portion of your trip aren't too terrible! At least yall were able to have some fun and she enjoyed herself.

In the long run it's best for everyone that I let it go. Takes a lot more energy to be negative anyway. :goodvibes

This Liberty Square information is completely fascinating to me! I had no idea about any of it. Good grief... seriously, only in Disney, you're so right about that! Thanks for sharing!

I was soooo interested to learn all of that stuff! You should really pop into Heritage House and ask about the shutters, see if you can get any more info about the area. It was fascinating! There was a super knowledgeable CM in the Christmas Store too, we spent a bunch of time with her too.

OH EUGENE. I don't know of you realize this but that picture is just PERFECT. Eugene and Rapunzel and Eric and Ariel are THE BEST EVER. Okay sorry.

;) I posted that picture with you in mind. Since my photography skills weren't the best I might not have shared it, but I knew you'd love it.

I went through the same thing with my DH. And that sounds exactly like something my mom would do!:rotfl2: You know what the scariest part is though? As I get older I find myself becoming more and more like her!:lmao:

:rotfl: me too!!! I'll say or do something and then call my little brother "Do I sound like mom?"

I love the update! I love that the Genie came over to Maddie!

It was so cool! A special day all around.

I liked your post about your MiL too. It's nice to know that she did recognize the hard work you put into the trip and enjoyed her time even if she didn't always behave that way. And good for you that you can look back and remember good things as well as the not so good.

In the long run, I figure that I have to let it go. We both love WDW so it's likely that we'll go back again some day with her. I know better now how to handle her.

I think that the meals only rule will work great for the big trip, my SiL is a nightmare! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Shannon, great update! I have lots of comments but will post tomorrow.

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards

Thanks Laura! I'm beginning to think that you have a life outside of the Dis. This concerns me.

I had no idea there were cheese quesadillas in the MK, they are Everett's favorite too, so we might be eating a meal at the tortuga tavern too! Thanks for the tip! :thumbsup2

I specifically researched quesedillas before the last trip. I knew she wouldn't make it even 5 days without asking for one. :rotfl: The taco salad and burrito were really good too. I love the toppings bar for them, I like lots of toppings!

I had no idea about the shutters hanging crooked, and truthfully I never noticed. That is such a cool detail and how awesome that the CM gave you all that info!

Check it out next time you're in Liberty Square. That CM was fascinating! I would have skipped the parade if he'd had more time to talk.

We had a good time watching the parade on our last trip, so I'm sure we'll do it again (even thought I find it a little boring  ). The pics of Maddie with the Genie are very cute, what a fun interaction!

Oh the parades. You know I'm not really into them either. But, Maddie loves them, and the Genie moment was priceless. It was a great afternoon.

:cool1:

I appreciate that. I am a stewer, believe me. It's a family joke that the only person who ever held a grudge longer than me was my grandmother. :lmao:

But, in this case there's no use. We both love WDW and there's a good chance that we'll go back with her, so I have to consider it a learning experience.

I married a History Nerd! He actually got his BA in history, so I knew he'd really love it too. I thought it was fascinating! That CM had so many little things to share, it was amazing. You should pop into Heritage House or the Christmas Shop on you next trip and chat with the CMs in there, they were great!

Love the genie coming and hugging your cutie. The Disney character interactions are just second to none.

Awesome update!!!

We had a lot of fun that afternoon, the Genie was awesome. I think it took Maddie a few seconds to realize why Jafar was giving her the evil eye and Genie hugged her, but she was really excited when she figured it out!

Thanks!!

Great update!! I love how your pictures are coming out (especially the indoor ones).

I LOVE the afternoon parade at MK! I really wish I could see it more often on my trips - but that's usually prime get-in-line-for-rides time and I'm outvoted :upsidedow

Thank you! That fancy camera made a real differnce!

That parade is really cute. I like it a lot better than the other parks' parades. Maddie is the parade/show person in our group. Some how her vote outweighs ours? :lmao:

:cool1: I'm all caught up!!!

I have so enjoyed the BBB and parade updates. Love the Jasmine costume and the attention at the parade. The PP photographers did a great job at both the BBB and the photo shoot! Very cool!

Welcome back!!! I can't wait to hear about the cruise!

The Jasmine costume was adorable, but I'm shocked that she chose it instead of a dress!

The Genie was great, and Maddie felt like she was a real princess which was perfect!

Great insight to your MIL. (I'm still not inviting mine. ;))

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Oh come on! It only took me 3 months to speak kindly of her involvement in our trip!

Now there is a TR i am looking forward to. ;)

:rotfl2::rotfl2: I must have mentioned what a joy my SiL can be! The TR will write itself on that trip!!!!

I'm glad that MiL likes the idea because otherwise I probably would not volunteer to plan the big trip. I think that I can shoulder the responsibility of certain people (SiL, MiL :rolleyes2) not enjoying certain meals, but taking the blame for their whole trip? No Way Jose! I'd kill them!!

Jasmine is one of my favorite costumes on DD, but she won't wear it. :scared: Actually, I think we are reaching the point where she isn't really wanting to wear costumes at all anymore. So sad - I really thought we might have another year or two. :confused3

I'm so glad that Maddie had such a magical experience. Isn't it amazing how the Disney CMs can create such special (and different) moments for all of the kiddos (and grown-ups too)? :lovestruc

OH NO! I'll be so sad when Maddie doesn't want to wear costumes any more! I think I'm safe for now though, she's requested that I make her both Merida dresses along with a new Aurora, and a new pink Ariel, and maybe a sparklier Cinderella. :lmao:

It was such a great day! I really can't wait to share the rest of it because it was my favorite day of the vacation. I hope that the CM appreciate how much of a difference they really make. They are one of the biggest differences between WDW and other places. I think they're amazing. :goodvibes
