We were having a discussion at work this morning as to how the hurricane will affect the rest of us. One lady at work said that come this weekend, gas stations will be out of fuel. Another says that prices are going to skyrocket on everything. They are both scared. Are you?

I'm only scared about what my home would look like had Katrina come here full force instead. And this is the final straw on getting my finances completely together so that we can handle any disaster.

Not scared, but have a sense of dread not unlike how I felt after 9/11.

This is how I feel also.

I'm sad for those affected. And like someone else has said, it has prompted my to get my finances in order. I think gas prices along with a lot of other costs are going to go up but I'm not worried about it running out.

I understand that people are worried but I think it is irresponsible to start a panic. Try not to worry, some people are always waiting for the sky to fall and end up disappointed when it doesn't.

Yep...I caught myself complaining about gas prices this morning.

There are people out there that lost EVERYTHING. Me coughing up a few more bucks for gas is trivial.

I'm very, very sad about how devistated the residents of NOLA, MS and AL are right now. We don't shop much beyond necessities anyways, so I'm not scared of the price of goods going up.

In terms of being "scared," I am scared that my friends in MA who are barely making ends meet as it is won't be able to afford heating fuel this winter. I am not "scared" about gas prices for our cars or higher prices at the stores...we survived the '70's oil crunch as a country, and we'll survive this.

The only other thing that scares me is that this could happen here where I live. It really could. I always thought that hurricaines meant wind and roof damage before. Now I see that they can mean flooding, disease, and total devistation.

I wasn't worried about running out either. We live in western NC and have been asked to conserve gas by canceling all unnecessary trips and travel. We have several dozen gas stations in our area that have closed because they have run out of gas, and aren't expecting to receive shipments for up to 10 days. We have cancelled our trip scheduled for this weekend trying to help any way we can to save gas. Going camping this weekend doesn't seem as important now.

I have an unsettling sense of dread, not unlike the day of 911. I can't help thinking how we would recover for something like this. Even middle class families will have devistating financial difficulties for a long long time. They will be paying on a house that can no longer be lived in. Many will not have jobs to return to for a long time, if at all. Insurance will help eventualy but it will be some time before they could even assess the damage. We have always lived below our means and are in good shape but there is only so much a family could prepare for. I feel so sorry for them, I don't know how they will cope?

On the positive side American's do not give up! We always rise to the occasion and I have no doubt somehow these people will also stand up to the problems and will triumph over them! We also come to each others aid and will look out for those in need. The best we can do is act on our fear and do something to help. Donate to the Red Cross today, even a few dollars will add up if everyone helps.

I, like Lisa loves Pooh, am only scared to know that Katrina came thisclose to hitting us.

Had Katrina made landfall another 80mi East (not much for a hurricane), the devastation could've easily been us.

I agree with this to an extent. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose everything and have no idea of what tomorrow will bring. Sadly, New Orleans has not seen the worst of this disaster. If I thought the few extra dollars I had to spend would help the people down there I'd have no problem. However, that's not the case. The oil companies are taking advantage of this disaster to make a profit. The oil that would be pumped and refined in the gulf right now wouldn't hit the pumps for at least 3 months. So why are they hitting us now? Also, those refineries and drilling platforms will be among the 1st things that are put back in operating order. So, I don't see this disaster having a long term affective on gas production. Everything else will be affected for a long time but not that.

My heart goes out to all those impacted by Katrina.

You have summed up my feelings as well. We are so dependant on our modern-day conveniences that I sometimes wonder whether we will ALL someday be completely crippled by a gas shortage, etc.

Not scared but feeling lots of sympathy for the millions affected by this hurricane. I, too, can't help but think how our family would weather something like this. I can't seem to wrap my brain around all the unknowns out there, and I'm not personally affected.

That's also how I feel. And so very, very sad for all of the families who have lost loved ones and everything they had. :(

No, I'm not scared, but definitely counting the many blessings I take for granted.

:worried: We've been through the heartache of 911 and losing a loved one in the Pentagon. Also a tornado that destroyed a town near by, then going over the top of our house, with thankfully no harm done. Plus, having a son in harm's way for a year. It definitely puts one in touch with reality, tests your faith and makes one stronger!!

I am feeling much compassion and heartache for all those suffering devastation beyond belief and lost loved ones...as it is a reminder how quickly life can change and we should live it to the fullest each day.

::yes::

Same here.

I'm also scared of what would happen to my home if a similar hurricane came through here. I can't imagine it being as bad as NO since we're not below sea level, but still.

I'm also afraid of another hurricane coming through and hitting one of the places the refugees have gone (like here in Houston).
