hellokitty86 said:How do you get a sleep study done? How much does it cost?
Thanks everyone for your well wishes, I love my cliqueless group!![]()
You should speak to your doctor (they may deem a sleep study unnecessary). If you do need one, they will refer you to a sleep lab. The cost ranges, but is usually covered by insurance.
If you do need to have one, this is what happens (for the most part):
You arrive at the lab (sometimes it's at a hospital, other times it's at an office) around 8-9pm (this also varies with each lab).
You will be in a private room, usually with TV. You will be asked to complete some paperwork and change into whatever you normally wear to sleep.
You are "hooked up" and the process is explained. You will have many wires on you. They are "connected" to you with a conductive paste. They go on your head (usually 7 different ones), legs (one on each), chest (heart beat)near each eye, your neck (for snoring) and chin. You will also have bands around your waist and chest (to measure breathing). .
Every aspect of your sleep will be monitored. They are looking to see if you snore, have leg movements, grind your teeth, have apnea, what stage sleep you are in.
You will be recorded on tape and will have an intercom in the room. If you need anything, the tech can hear you and will assist.
Many times people can't sleep. You can watch TV, read, whatever. It is best to try and get some sleep otherwise you may have to come back again. In the morning, you will be unhooked, but won;t have any results. Those take bit to review. You may be asked to come back for another study (depending on if you may have narcolepsy, apnea, etc).
So, that's pretty much what happens. I had children as young as 6 come in and patients up to 90+. If you (or anyone) is having problems sleeping, snore, stop breathing, it is best to discuss it with your doctor. Sleep apnea can lead to other health problems.
Any questions, just ask!
