While up to the lake over the weekend I was going through recipes and naming off some of the things to my DD and her DH that I would like to try this summer..

Somehow we got off on the subject of what foods make us feel better and I had mentioned that one year - for the entire summer - I ate the same thing for supper every single day.. (And when I say "summer" that actually means from May 1st until about October 1st.) It was steak and a tossed salad with French Dressing.. I never felt better - or more energetic and alert -- in my entire life!!

It's been a LONG time since I've eaten like that though so I was wondering.. Nowadays, which type of steak do you think is the most tender? Do you cook it any special way to make it extra tender?

And can anyone venture a guess why my steak and tossed salad diet made me feel so good?

I may just have to go back to it this year!;)

When I was PG with DD I craved steak all the time! We ate out a lot during my pregnancy and I would order the biggest steak and eat the whole thing! I have never eaten so much red meat in my life! LOL! :teeth:

DH and I just grilled steaks the other day and we couldn't believe how much DD ate. She must have enjoyed it in the womb! :p ;) :teeth:

Did you eat steak at any special time in your life previously? Maybe it was a comfort food feeling. I had that with Mac n' Cheese when I was homesick. :)

ME!!!! That and a baked potato, a tossed salad and a bottle of wine..........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

I eat steak all the time. I forgo the potato, though. Too many carbohydrates :)

I can't say I care for steak. But then again I don't eat meat besides ocassionaly chicken...I'm not a vegetarian or anything, I just don't like meat all that much.

I prefer steaks at home always. No restaurant compares.

We have them once in a while. DH has just mastered how to cook them to perfection too! :happy2:

I'm a VERY choosy steak eater, and you can't buy a "good" steak in the grocery store... I have heard that you can get good cuts at at meat market, but I've never gone to such lengths... If I'm craving a steak, I go out to someplace that can get prime beef. Even most restaurant chains dont get the good stuff =) HUGE difference between that and whats at the store.

DH doesnt care... he'll eat steak from the store, but I pass =)

My fave cut is Filet Migeon (is that how you spell it?) =)

I love a good N.Y. Strip cooked on the grill. I marinate it in olive oil, soy sauce and Montreal Steak Seasoning. Yummy. Then a baked potato lots of sour cream and mayo salad.

Don't mean to toot my own horn....I can cook an awesome steak on our grill. I think the grill is key. We had an ordinary propane BBQ until it took a dump a few years ago. We got a Kenmore Elite natural gas ***6 BURNER*** grill. That is the only way to go!! I can cook a complete steak, baked potato, corn on the cob, and garlic bread on the grill. Makes for an easy clean-up. Our fav steaks are delmonicos or porterhouses. I NEVER buy my meat at the grocery store. We have some pretty good places around here to get good cuts. I save the filets for the restaurant, though!!

Oh yes, I just love a good steak! Now that we live in AZ we can grill year round. My favorite cut is sirloin, Dh is a former chef so my steak is always a perfect medium rare!

C. Ann, that's low carb eating. Besides the fact that steak is so yummy, the low carb thing might just be why it makes you feel so good.

I was wondering about that - and I have definitely noticed that when I eat a lot of cereal, bread, pasta, potatoes, etc., it makes me tired..

Here's the rub though.. I know lots of people use the low carb diet to lose weight and (don't hit me, please!) I already weigh less than 100 lbs. - so - would it be "bad" for me to try to go low carb?

What would be the "good" and "bad" things for me to eat? I sure would love to feel like that again!!!:)

You won't lose weight unless you really limit your carbs. I assume that you're getting carbs at your other meals? The only bad thing I see is possibly getting a lot of fat from the steak but it depends on how much of it you eat and how lean it is of course.

You can also eat most veggies and keep that good feeling. Avoid carrots and corn and definitely potatoes. I can't think of others.

The energy you're getting is from the high protein! You were eating lots of protein (plus veggies that are good for you anyway) so you didn't have room for carbs that do bring you down/make you tired.

Protein is digested slowly, so your body has a long-term energy supply. Carbs are digested quickly (complex carbs a little more slowly, but still faster than protein) so you get an initial burst of energy (like after eating a candy bar) but then your body crashes because the energy level is not maintained.

You don't have to go low-carb, per se. Increase the amount of protein in your diet, and just "top off" with carbs...you may not want any at all after a good steak and salad :) FYI...dieticians say we need at least 120 carbs a day for minimal health... many of the low-carb diets do not provide that, at least in their intro phases...not healthy! But if it's short-term (very) for the long-term benefit of lower weight and therefore better health, I guess I could see doing it....if I had any will-powere where food is concerned

My mom's been eating like this for years due to her hypoglycemia.... it keeps her on an even keel. When I was skinny (before kids) I was hypoglycemic as well, and had to eat lots of small, frequent meals, heavy on protein, light on carbs, just to keep my blood sugar level and to keep from passing out. I've gained a bit of weight, though, so it's not a problem anymore....wish it was

I enjoy a good steak cooked at home. We get a side of beef from dh's cousin and I always comment that we couldn't go out and eat at a steakhouse and afford the kind of steak meal we make at home. Yum!

I love, love, love grilled flank steak. I don't usually eat a lot of it, but I love it on salads and in sandwiches.

I'll make ribeyes once in a while, but that's just too much meat for me all at once.

Ribeye for me - in my opinion it's the best cut for home cooking in the UK, but the steaks must have some fat runing through them for flavour.

I get a thick bottomed pan nice and hot (no oil), season the steaks with a little salt and (if liked) fresh ground pepper. Then I rub olive oil into both sides of the steak and cook them one at a time for three or four minutes each side. I then keep each steak in a warm place for around five minutes to allow the meat to rest.

When they are served they are juicy, tender and lovely and pink in the middle Mmmmm! ::yes::

I could eat prime rib for every meal. Throw in a sweet potato and an ice cold beer, yeah that's the stuff dreams are made of.

just a t hought no one else has touched on.. as a small person, it might have been the increased iron intake that was making you feel better,, dw is 100 lbs,, she has a problem keeping her iron levels up, she always feels betterafter agood med steak the extra iron in red meat is what she craves. but i digress,, our favorites are rib eyes, we g et them at grocery , since local grocery has fresh in house butcher who happen to be buddy :) we get really good steaks. he wont let us buy off the rack, he cuts ours i'll either grill them over a charcoal andwood fire , seasoned with tony cachierres seasoning lemon pepper and a touch of garlic, or i have an old iron griddle that fits over t he burners of the stove,, i'll grill there if the weatrhers not right, we usssually do staeks at least one nigt a week too
