Please educate me with the information as to who on the DIS Discussion Forums has the power to ban a poster. And exactly what is the criteria for this action?

Thank you,

Rae

Rae,

It is my belief that banning is done at the discression of the moderators and webmasters. It is usually caused by someone breaking one or more of the rules/guidelines laid out by the site. In most cases I think the offending party is giving warnings and maybe even a short term banishment before being fully banned. I would think the more serious a problem the quicker a banishment happens.

These are general feelings about banishment from most online communities and I think they apply at the DIS as well.

I'm sure Michelle, Robin or CarolAnn and explain things better and then probably close the thread as it is off topic.

Your best chance for an answer is to ask one of the moderators or webmasters in a private post.

Yo Rae!

And exactly what is the criteria for this action?

I'm not quite sure of each and every qualifying reason, but I do believe that any displaced New Yorker who has the audacity to relocate to Indiana is automatically banned - except they don't know it for several years...

These are the guidelines I found on the page that appears when you click to register. I can't find any other information. I think that only the webmasters can ban someone for what is considered an offense. A vague answer, and there might be a page I missed somewhere, but it's all I could find.

"Registration to this forum is free! We do insist that you abide by the rules and policies detailed below. If you agree to the terms, please press the Agree button at the end of the page. Note: By pressing the button you declare that you are over the age of 13. If you are 13 or under, please use this registration form.

Although the administrators and moderators of The DIS Discussion Forums will attempt to keep all objectionable messages off this forum, it is impossible for us to review all messages. All messages express the views of the author, and neither the owners of The DIS Discussion Forums or Jelsoft Enterprises Limited (developers of vBulletin) will be held responsible for the content of any message.

By clicking the Agree button, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.

The owners of The DIS Discussion Forums have the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason."

Well, Buckaroo's Dad - I think that it is the innate right for everyone to be stupid and leave the great state - but why do we have to continue with the idiocy and remain gone???????

CRB#33 - I agree that things that are "obscene, vulgar, hateful, threatening or otherwise violative of any laws" should be banned - but darn, do we have to take sexually-oriented stuff out of it too?! Sheesh! Some of us can only get cheap thrills!!!!
(Seriously, I do agree with those guidelines - and also the owners of the forums right to ban - but (and this BUT is coming from a big BUTT - I, along with many others, fought for the freedom of speech.....one of the basic RIGHTS....therefore, if an individual has a "problem" with another, then s/he has the right to placed that person on the IGNORE LIST or do a private e-mail and not make a BIG ISSUE out of it.

Am I on my high horse? Yes. Actually, he was 17 hands tall today and I was in the saddle for 3 hours.......

Rae

Do you have someone specific in mind (hopefully not me), or are you just curious?

Also, there's a link at the bottom of each post which allows you to "report this post to a moderator." You could use that to at least call attention to a candidate for banning.

Just a general question, Lloyd!!! Hey, after this "discussion", I may get "banned"!!!!!!!!!

Again, the freedom of speech issue comes up. If we can't say what we want to here, where can we say it?

Very true about the "report this post" but as mature adults I can't see us running to "Mom and Dad" to settle our differences.

If someone has a problem with what I say or have said, then I expect them to have the guts to write me a note and tell me directly. And then they can put me on their Ignore List and go on their merry way!

No, I'm not PMSing, folks - maybe it's those menopause blues!!!!

I have to admit on some forums I subscribe to "Off Topic" posts can become a royal pain. Sometimes it becomes more of a personal venue to trade comments that are better put into an email.
The answer most of the time is to put O.T. in the header though and then you can just ignore if you want.
That said I don't find this particular board bad at all. Maybe its because the mods jump on it right away. I've experienced threads closed because the powers at be decided they don't want this topic talked about. I found it absurd but its not my playground.
The mods DO seemed to have come out of the woodwork the past day or two though :)
Off to the Debate board with this one? ;)
Cheers,
Grumbo

As a flagrant violator of the off topic - I can understand your position on it. Yes, some of us do tend to make our postings personal (and I have admitted my part in this) but I also find that by going off topic, we also learn more about eachother - we build support systems that otherwise may not be there.

For example, poster A begins a thread with an appropriate topic...B replies...C makes a comment to A regarding something either funny or interesting....D jumps in with a reply and E brings it back to the topic....F then gets into the pile and finds that s/he has something in common with poster D..... are you following me or am I rambling on here?

Often I read the posts and enjoy the off topic comments more because I can learn about others....and in that way, I can determine my opinion of them and their input. Sometimes I find that I really, really like what a person has to say and we become friends (case in point, me and verandah man) These friendships only occur when we have the thread begun, otherwise how would we know that BD has such a great sense of humor or that verandahman was such a great humanitarian?

It's the off topic remarks that make us unique, interesting and keep this forum alive.

So I do appreciate your standpoint, but I will continue to post off topic at times and be a general pain in the neck to anyone who doesn't like what I have to say.

Life is too short to worry about the little stuff!

Rae

Ahhhh, the age old dilema :)

Seriously, I have been on these boards since the summer of 2000. (Under a different name....a "friend" hacked into my computer and got all my screen names and passwords, hence a new identity.)

These kinds of threads have been going on for as long as I've been here. (free speech type things)

Most people have just come to the conclusion that this is Pete Werner's house and we play by his rules. There are many sites that don't moderate and/or restrict postings. I believe Pete wants to keep this as family oriented as possible and leave as little room for offence as possible. I respect that and actually appreciate it since my 14 year old DD has looked over my shoulder more than once while I have been on this site.

I see where you are coming from also as a mature fun-loving adult.

I just figure that if I would like to be here, I'll respect the owner's requirements. :)

Rae,
By going OT, you wouldn't happen to be discussing shrimp would you?!?
(Sorry, I had to ask to lighten up this thread a bit.) :)

As others have stated, the webmasters of the site have the power to ban a poster.

Again, Rae, if you have a problem with something feel free to e-mail or PM one of the board mods or e-mail the webmasters at admin@wdwinfo.com .

On the contrary, Michelle - I have NEVER had a problem with anything written on the threads. I find the off topics interesting, the humor funny (even when it's directed to me) and probably would invite 99.999% of the posters to my house for a meal (and one is in my neighborhood!!!!!)

It just came up and I was curious about it.

Also, I can appreciate the job that the moderators do - personally, I wouldn't want to do it and respect them for what they are doing.......BUT as adults I think we should deal with our little "squabbles" and "misunderstandings" ourselves and not run to "mom and dad" to complain.

Yes, we do have young people on the threads. Again, that big BUTT makes a "but...." - BUT if they are on, then it's their parents responsbility to monitor them and not ours to. I am not sure that came out right but....I hope so.

jilljill - Darling, everything is about shrimp in one way or another!! I mean, let's be real here!!!!

If there is nothing else to comment on, I think jilljill is right - we need to lighten up ------ especially me!

God bless and keep you safe, healthy and happy! Unless you don't believe in God, and then, well, you are on your own!

Well, it's Wednesday morning, that means the Magic is in St. Thomas with Nate (Verandah Boy) and his family.

The sun is shining here in NJ, a cool wind is blowing, it is the picture perfect way to start a NEW DAY!!!

Bet you'd rather be on the Magic sitting on your verandah!

Rae
