who has rented points as a non-DVC member...your experiences please!!!!!

I have rented points from members 3 times. All 3 times I had to send 100% as soon as reservation was made. I disagree that the member takes a greater risk. I think the person who rents and sends the full amount in advance is taking the greater risk.

That being said, I rented points for a trip earlier this month. Worked out great - it was a last minute deal - less than 2 weeks before check in date. So there was no time to send me the confirmation papers. The member got them the day before I left and emailed them to me. I had already called MS and verified the reservation, but it feels much better to have it in writing. I was very nervous when we checked in that the reservation would somehow be gone, but everything was great.

The other 2 rentals are for my october 2003 trip - so far the members have been great.

By the way, I just got my temporary member card in the mail, so I guess I am now a member too!! Beware, all it takes is one stay to get you hooked!:jester:

Dear Lexifern,

I'm leaving in 3 weeks and just mailed out my final payment. A week after the ressie was made, I received the official reservation and called DVC to firm up all the information. Everything for me went very smoothly and I also had a good feeling about the individual I was renting points from. I haven't even left yet and I'm already thinking about planning another vaca and you can bet I'll rent points again. You just can't beat the price. It seems everyone is happy.....the DVCer for making a little cash and the renter for being able to grab some nice accomodations for a good savings! It's just a really great thing......it's a very good thing! This site is pretty cool, too!

I am currently in the midst of a transaction with a DVC member. The DVC owner has made reservations for me for February 2004, in my name. I have been sent the confirmation and upon receipt of the confirmation I sent her a signed contract and 50% payment (with the remaining 50% due 90 days prior to check-in). FYI: I made contact with a few DVC members during my quest and although all had slightly different terms, they were generally the same.

I did ask for and received a reference but never followed through checking on it. I fell into a comfort zone very quickly when the DVC member and I talked on the phone. She was very helpful. I also checked her past posts, mostly out of curiosity, and I felt even more comfortable. So, there is no doubt you need to feel comfortable with this “stranger” you will be working with (and vice-versa).

My advice is be absolutely sure of the dates, location and type of accommodations you want as well as the points you will need. Get very familiar with the DVC Trade/Rent board if you are not already (I followed it for about 6 months before I finally decided I was ready and then made “contact” with someone). Read the FAQ and post any general questions that are not answered on the FAQ. Also, keep in mind the 11 month window.
Hope this helps.

Paul (someone who has yet to finish the entire process!)

I am a DVC member who has rented several times. Couple of things - negative posts are removed from this board as there are 3 sides to every story. Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I rented to someone who had a problem with another member and I also have had a problem with a renter so it goes both ways.

Here's my view (for what it's worth)"
I would never give a copy of my membership card or DL. I supply the person with my home and cell numbers (I work from home). I e-mail the ressie number as soon as I speak with MS, send a scan of the confirmation when it is received and send several e-mails for payment reminders and see if they need anything along the way. Than I generally e-mail the week before reminding them of the ressie number and my phone numbers. During the process, I encourage them to call the resort directly and verify the ressie.

It is all a matter of comfort but I think you know people are comfortable as I have also rented to some of the same people year after year.

Good luck
Sandy

I have had such a wonderful experience renting points that I hope in the future when I'm looking to rent again that I too may rent from the same DVC member year after year!

:D
