I'm scheduled to have it on the 19th. My mom, who had it years ago, says I'll be laid up for a long time. The doc says 2 weeks, and I'll still be able to "hobble".

Who's right? ;) Or are they both right? ;) Or is this going to get the standard answer of "Everyone is different"? :teeth:

:teeth: 2 weeks tops :teeth: best thing i ever did :teeth: i was in so much pain beforehand that i felt relief immediatly. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Thanks. Did you have both feet done? I'm only having one right now.

DH had similar surgery (cleaned out broken bone fragments from both knuckle joints & shaved them down) He was laid up for about 2 weeks, hobbled for another 2, at least... he's still 'not right' but he's got some funky feet.

Funky feet? :rotfl:

I'm hoping to get rid of my "funky feet" - you think they're gonna get funkier? ;) :rotfl2:

just one. i had a tailors bunion, it was big enough that it had its own zip code :teeth:  the doctor shaved/straightened the bone. it has helped me tons.

I did both at the same time.. I was "walking" and back to work in a week... drving was easier than walking.. LOL

OK, so let me ask you this? We're "supposed" to close on our house on the 15th - if I have surgery on the 19th, will I pretty much be "supervising" the moving-in thing? :confused3 ;)

YEP..::yes:: with your feet up on a chair.. BTW you need to keep your feet elevated to prevent swelling..
From. http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/booklet/view_report.cfm?Thread_ID=7&topcategory=Foot

Bearing Weight Your orthopaedic surgeon may advise you to use a walker, cane, or crutches for the first few days after surgery. You can gradually put more weight on your foot as your wound heals. However, walk only short distances during the first few weeks following surgery. You will probably be able to drive again within about a week.

Swelling and Shoe Wear Keep your foot elevated as much as possible for the first few days after surgery, and apply ice as recommended by your orthopaedic surgeon to relieve swelling and pain. You will have some swelling in your foot for about six months. After your dressings have been removed, wear only athletic shoes or soft leather oxford type shoes for the first several months until the surgery has completely healed. Do not wear fashion shoes, including high heels, until after six months. This will help prevent the recurrence of your bunion.

Good info guys. I guess I'd better do everything that HAS to be done in the first days after we move in - or NOTHING will get done. ;)

I had both of my feet done at the same time...2 bunionectomies and 2 toes straightened...I had the surgery done on a Wed and went back to work the following Mon...I could not drive but my boss lived in the same town and picked me up. I wobbled around pretty good with that cane! :) :) :) I did elevate as much as possible too. Also, I had to stay at my Mom's for 2 weeks so she could help with my son who was about 1 1/2 at the time (I was going through a divorce) and I had to sponge bath for a while...which sounds gross but I got pretty good at it!!! :)

It was painful at first but nothing a few percoset couldn't cure...The therapy after was painful getting the toes to work again but well worth it. No more pain from bunions. It did take a while for my feet to feel 100% again...maybe a year or so.

You will also be supervising the move in and or doing little things. Just listen to your body and don't push yourself.

Good luck - it will be fine! Feel free to PM me if you would like more info.

Thanks Lauren. Did your feet look more "normal" after a while? No more big bump?

Yes, definitely. I had to have my 2nd toes straighten since the big toes was so crooked that is caused my other toes to curl...the scars are still there but have faded...I eventually would like to get a tattoo on one foot to cover it up...I am babbling now!!! :)

I also just edited my original post with more info...I am an open book...ask me anything!!! :)

I had bunionectomies on both feet, different times, with a hammer toe fixed with one of the surgeries. The walking shoe that I had to wear was the biggest pain in the butt!!!! I wasn't supposed to, but I rode my horse the next day :teeth: . It really is best if you stay off your feet and elevate them. I really had no pain at all. My feet look normal, slight scarring but very faded. My feet really hurt me before the surgery, now I have no problems with them at all.

I consider myself a "Pro-Surgery Poster Girl" because of that exact surgery! I had one toe done and it was a piece of cake and the problem never came back. But the best part was the actual surgery/recovery.

This was my first surgery. I loved being put out for it.......aaahhhh sleepy time! And then I woke up in the recovery room with an angelic nurse who so kindly asked if I was cold, which I was. So she went and got me a warmed blanket and put it over me. Then I looked up and the room I was in had a border around the top of the room and the border was cats  . I thought to myself, this is what heaven will be like!

I think I was off my feet for about 4 days then hobbled. No biggy.

My DSIL had it a few years ago, and I recall her hobbling around fairly soon after the surgery. She was in her early 40's when she had it done.

I have had 5 bunionectomies (3 left, 2 right) and should have more surgery on the left foot. I tend to develop a lot of scar tissue. As described above, I went back to work soon after the first two surgeries and did not keep the foot elevated. When I went back for my final check-up they looked like nothing had ever been done to them. I was in tears. The doctor repeated the surgery but I had to be out of work for a total of twelve weeks and keep the foot elevated. The second was done just as the first was supposedly healed. HA! Another doctor did the third surgery on the left and it is still messed up.

So, in a nutshell, follow the doctor's instructions so you don't have to do it again, even once.

Are you having general or local anesthesia? Haven't had more surgery because the podiatrist wanted to do it under a local. I'm not that crazy!
