Who fixes your computer when something bad happens?

I've only had one problem I could not fix so I called the Geek Squad.

I married him. :goodvibes

Although he does give me grief for not switching over to Linux or Unix or SUN or Solaris or whatever he's running across the room...:rotfl:

My DH is a computer technician. So......Hey Computer Guy...... ;) (Think Hey Culligan Man).

He's the one people call. He has one particular street too that he's been known to be at one person's house -- another neighbor comes over and says "I saw your car in their driveway so I wanted to come over and catch you because we are having XYZ problems". :lmao: And it's NOT our neighborhood, one of his friends referred the first person & it just took off from there, so he calls it "his street". ;)

The only real problem I ever had was that it kept getting hot on the bottom and then dying. I attempted to fix this myself by wrapping bags of frozen peas in a kitchen towel and sitting the computer on them...this was not a big help, and I've come to find out (from tech people) that it isn't the recommended solution.

Now I have a new laptop that sits on a little fan. :) I will dutifully haul it down to Circuit City when it has a problem.

Surely people with Macs will be along soon to rub in the fact that they don't have computer problems. :)

I was a PC Tech/Systems Analyst up until I had DD and decided to "retire" :rotfl: Unfortunately, I have to come of retirement when we have a problem or someone I really like has a problem :)

I had to laugh as I read this! I know exactly what you mean! People come out of nowhere when they know there is PC help close! Thank God for caller ID! :lmao:

DH is a computer professional...I hand him my laptop and say "make it go"...

I build my own computers and I write software for a living. So I can pretty much handle any issues we come across.

I fix my machines, Hubby fixes his. Hubby also fixes the Linux firewall and the mail server. Oh, and he upgrades the Mac for the 2 YO DD (Fiona), because I won't touch it. *shrug* It's a Mac, man. I don't DO Macs any more. Once their memory came in DIMMs with specific slots and they used hocky pucks for mice, I called game over.

Hubby and I came to this agreement after he found himself holding my screwdriver four too many times and had me glaring at him for taking over what I was doing. He's a pushy, curious, bugger. He knows I can do it, he just wants to know what I'm doing... and how did the screwdriver end up in his hand??? (He also is a magpie and picks up and walks away with anything shiny, by the way.)

Pretty soon, though, Fiona will be fixing all the machines in the house; she already has secret key combinations we're in awe of. She can disable ANY security. She's had her own webcam and split keyboard since she could hold her head up... It was the only way to make her happy with tummy time. No joke.

We're 2 geeks who married and had geek offspring. It's insane. Well, at least our electricity bill is insane. *sigh*

My DH -- the systems administrator who also builds & fixes computers on the side for family & friends. He's worked his way up from computer tech to database admin to systems admin. He can handle it.

Funny thing....I'm the one with the BS in Computer Science from 1986. lol

2 geeks here too....but he's turned out WAY worse than me.

Me (so far), but sometimes with the help of searching for the answer on the internet. The good thing is also that, everytime it gets fixed, I've learnt something new. In October 2005, I built a PC from scratch, just to see if I could do it and no one was more surprised than me when it worked! :goodvibes

Even after ten years of using PCs, when I've done something, such as writing an Excel formula, I'm still amazed when it works. :surfweb:

It's also nice to help others and pass on the little knowledge that I have.

I also think the internet is a fantastic learning resource because most people are so willing to share what they know, the DIS being a prime example :tink:

Thank God for DF...he fixes everything! I am not very good at technical things...however, I am very good and breaking them! :)

Me, and I'm the guru for the neighborhood. I usually work for food. ;)

I'm really impressed by how many posters either fix their own problems or have a spouse do it.
I can fix many smaller things, but when it comes to bigger things, about the only thing I can do is make the problem worse.
Unfortunately my computer guru told me today that my motherboard was fried, and that it needs replacement. It will also require a new ram memory card (1 gig), because what I had before isn't compatible.
Oh well, I hate paying for it, but at least I will be getting a newer, faster set of equipment when it is all said and done.
I am also going to be repacing my Windows 2000 with XP.
I actually have Vista on my new laptop, but I wish I didn't. There are some nice new features, but too many things just aren't compatible with it yet.

Software - Me. Hardware - Dell. Works out pretty well so far.

That worked for me too; until Dell's hardware support technicians actually destroyed my computer by improperly installing a new power supply and it took me two months to get Dell to accept responsibility and replace the computer.

I'll still do the software myself and if I have hardware needs I'll figure it out then. The warranty on the replacement Dell eventually sent is expiring soon (before the warranty on the one they destroyed would have), but hopefully I won't have to have any work done.

Nah, don't need to, you already know ;)

I actually like my server and my firewall, they are running linux right now, although I'm thinking of switching to FreeBSD...

DH built our computers so he can certainly fix them.

My boyfriend fixes my computer he is quite the computer guy!

Cool-Beans -OMG! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: What a great tag this would be "used frozen peas to fix computer". :rotfl:
