Who else would appreciate a pet-friendly DVC property?

I'm not sure about the number of people allergic but I suspect that more people are allergic to dogs than cats simply because you must be exposed to be allergic and more people are exposed to dogs. However, cat dander is far more allergenic than dogs and in addition, it is far smaller and stickier. This means it's essentially the only indoor allergen that is air born and it's impossible to clean from a house. Many people are actually allergic to cats simply by environmental exposure to the allergen on other people's clothing, etc.

I was allergic to over 350 things - thankfully my Doctor got me over most of them - still allergic to drugs and food (Doctor won't touch these at this time) - dust mites, mold, mildew, tobacco and dogs - I have cats and I am not allergic to them.

However I don't want to offend anyone - lots of people and I mean lots of people are very scare of cats. most of the people I know that say they are allergic to cats but don't get sick around me - people I pet my cats every day. the dogs who don't like cats makes it obivously that I smell like a cat. I think especially with cats that people are scare of them.

Also the big dogs - same reaction....I haven't send anyone yet whose eyes get big when they see a little dog - but boy when some people see a big dog or a cat.....

I have always had pets - so on the whole they don't bother me - but I am also around people who aren't use to animals and they are bother by just everything.

as long as there are a lot of people who are scare of animals - pets are not going to allow in most establishments.

so train your animals!!!!

with DVC I think it is more of some nuts who do leave their pets - they would get upset being alone in a strange place and probably start to make noises. You have a dog who is very defensive and a security guard tries to enter the place to see what is going on and he gets attached....No I can understand why Disney does not want this to happen.

Loews solve this be given me a pager (would work in the parks too) - so if my animal was getting upset or the maid needed to enter - they would get me to come back and remove my animals until the problem could be fixed.

they didn't know me - but Spicey is never left alone. we got take out so he won't be alone. when I was going to the parks he stayed in US kennels....

I can give you my take on pet friendly DVC and why it would not work:
1. Allergies
2. distruction of property due to scratching, chewing, fur balls and those accidents that just happen.
3. Those occurance where the dog wants to do its business outside and the owner chooses not to clean it up.
4. Liability to Disney if it bits a child or other person, nice friendly dog bite people every day.
5. barking late at night. Like a non-smoking request, who is to say you might get a room next to a pet, even if you ask not too..


I can go on and on but you get the picture. Oh, by the way, we have both a dog and cat and board the dog and have family watch the cat when we are on vacation...smjj

I didn't know US/IOA resorts allowed pets - that's good to know and I won't ever stay there, apparently.

I think that unless you know someone with severe pet allergies, you don't truly understand how it can be.

A few years ago in order to save some $$$, I stayed a couple nights at the Comfort Inn right outside DTD. I wondered all day why I felt "off" and sniffly. Well, turns out that was a pet-friendly hotel. I asked for non-smoking due to allergies, but pets were allowed in those rooms too. At the time, I thought pet-friendly hotels were very rare and it never occured to me to ask about this.

Some of us are very sensitive. I can pick up cat dander in someone's car, on clothing, even when a place has been repainted and carpets steam cleaned.

I would consider selling my points if DVC ever went in this direction. It probably wouldn't be worth the risk of being sick on vacation.

Hmmmmm let me think about this for a minute .... no pets at DVC !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dog-Pooo over the grounds, barking dogs, room smell and hair, people not leashing their animals esp. around curious little kids ... same problems you have in the anytown, USA ...

I would have voted "No." I have a sister-in-law and nephew that will never be able to visit my home due to my wife's cats. Where would you put the litter box in a studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom?

We are fortunate to be able to drive to Disney. We bring our Yorkie dog every time. She doesn't do well in kennels, even the vets kennel. So we bring her. She stays at the EPCOT kennel and we love it there. We think it is the best of the Disney kennels and we have tried a few. They will walk your dog for a fee, if you can't make it there and they really look after the animals. Our dog just does better because she can see us every day. Sure it not her normal environment, but she knows we are close.

When we have left her at the kennel at home, it costs us $200 in vet bills when we get back from all the digestive issues. That's a problem for yorkies. So, it saves us money and she enjoys it. How many dogs can say they had there picture taken with Spaceship Earth in the background!!!!

Pet friendly hotels are just not common, and therefore not accepted, unless the animal is a service animal. Come to think of it, with the degree of handicapped accessibility at WDW, I imagine that many of us have probably stayed in a room where an animal has been. Funny how there have been no known occurences of horrific health problems at WDW due to "allergies" to pet dander.

I feel you are downplaying the seriousness of pet allergies. If you have ever seen a child exposed to cat dander, gasping to breathe as he is driven to the ER I think you might feel differntely. No "human" damage could ever compare to this. Parents shouldn't have to worry about things like this while on vacation. I don't think people with cat allergies would have bought DVC if cats were allowed ANYWHERE. BTW, I really like cats. I could never have one though, because it would prevent members of my family from ever visiting. That's why we have a dog!

Interesting that this very old thread has been resurrected.

I am a dog lover/breeder/exhibitor and an allergy sufferer. Do I want pet friendly DVC? ABSOLUTELY NOT ! We have traveled to WDW with some of our dogs on occations where we were going to Florida dog shows, but they stayed in the kennels at one of the parks. We excersized them several times a day, and it was a pain in the behind! I leave my dogs at home now when I go to WDW and our dog/house sitters take very good care of all nine of them!

It is unreasonable to expect places like DVC to house animals in the units when there are allergies and maintanance issues to consider. If the DVC resorts would have their own pay as you go kennels, that might be different, but there is no need, since the parks each have a perfectly proper kennel.
