My computer keeps shutting down and restarting itself due to this virus and when I go to windows updates to get help, i'm booted off again before I can get anything done.

is there a remedy?

HI, i called Gateway yesterday and they said that it was happening to alot of people with Windows XP.i could not get on the internet yesterday at all it just kept shutting down, but today i have been on for about 2 hours and had no problems at all. They told me yesterday it should be fixed during the night, and for me it looks like it has.:p

I had to restart twice so far this morning!!! I have been on for about 15 minutes now with no problems (knocking on wood)

Call Microsoft toll-free number 1-866-727-2338.
I kept hitting redial until I got through. Then they gave me a case number (write it down) and transfered me. I was then on hold for 2 1/2 hrs! I had put the phone on speaker, cooked dinner, ate dinner, made some cell phone calls, read mags, etc. When they finally answered they fixed it right up.
He said they had 9000 calls already and over 200 on hold. Yikes.
Running out to buy a Virus Scan now.
Good luck.

Good luck.

Good suggestion! Every computer that connects to the internet these days should be doing two things:

1) Running a piece of updated virus software.
2) Making sure you keep your system updated with Windows Critical Updates at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I have all my systems set to check once a week and automatically apply patches. Makes it a lot easier.

I've got it, too. I can't even get logged on to the net at home before it boots me off. VERY frustrating!

At work this morning I copied the patch onto a CD and will try to install it at home tonight. If that doesn't work, I have no idea how to fix this. I'm kind of sure it won't work because the patch is to PREVENT the virus and I already have it. I don't know what to do get RID of it. :(

Just to double check, are you sure this isn't the Lovsan virus? That's the one that's going around right now.

Symantec has a removal tool you can use at

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html

The reason windows update may not work as the virus tells the infected computer to do a Denial Of Service Attack on the windows update site. Hence the problems with updating.

Of course, then you should do the patch and run, not walk to your local store and get some virus software.

jfulcer - yes - think it is, though I haven't seen those words, the description matches (i.e. shutting down, restarting, over and over)

I'm typing quickly b/c i know it's going to do it any minute now.

thanks for the replies, I'm going to try everything you all mentioned here.

Does anyone else thing it's funny to see the Dr in the virus checks? I crack up everytime I see that for some reason.:jester:

Thanks for all the help. I've burned the patch and the tool from symantec and will try to use them at home tonight. Cross your fingers!!

THANK GOODNESS IT IS NOT ME!!!! I thought I broke the computer oops its looging me off

It's a virus known as Spybot. We've had it too.

The moneycentral.com site is also calling it, "Blaster", and the article states that, unlike other viruses, you don't have to receive an infected email, it comes directly through the net.

We had this yesterday too. It kept saying "Remote procedure call service terminated unexpectedly". DH called Dell and waited on hold for two hours and they told him how to fix it. I have been logged on for about a half hour now and so far so good. Hope you can get yours fixed.

DH thinks that I infected it when I downloaded the windows updates but it popped up on the bottom of my screen to tell me to download those things. Is this possible? Should I not be downloading these updates?

well i went to windows and found that I needed 37 critical updates that I didn't know of - that took forever to download and also went to that symantec link provided here and did that too....SOOOO I hope this all works. It's my first time on since I did them, a few minutes will tell.

thanks again everybody - hope we'll all be ok now - until the next one

VAlerie - that's EXACTLY what was happening to me.

My brother went into my start up menu, found the file "TFTP2712" and deleted it.

then onto windows for crucial updates and the symantec link for the security tool.

It just appeared, I hadn't up/downloaded any updates and I just got it on my desktop...

try following the 2 links provided above and you should be ok.

I've been online now about 5-7 minutes and it's been fine (fingers crossed)

What is the difference between the 32 bit Edition and the 64 bit Edition? Do I just need one or do I need both?

I've been dealing with this the past couple days. Here's a link I found:

http://www.blkviper.com/AskBV/tech10.htm

We're computer idiots, we know nothing--thought we had a firewall because XP comes with a firewall. It does, but it wasn't enabled, you have to enable it yourself.

In between getting shut down, I printed out the instructions in that link, turned the Remote Procedure Call to "do nothing" to give me time to fix this, enabled my firewall, and installed all the updates. I installed the patch yesterday and it did nothing to solve the problem--I guess it doesn't work unless you block the 135 port with a firewall. You still have to install the patch, but I think once you have the problem it won't fix the problem, though it will prevent it if you don't have it.

That could be completely wrong, that's just my understanding of it. I do know that installing the patch didn't fix my problem. I had to turn on my firewall. The message boards I've been reading are telling people to put up firewalls to block that port. Also, I know there are several things going around right now, but apparently this one isn't picked up by virus scans because it's not a virus, it's a trojan.
