My DH thinks I have a shoe obsession I told him that I will have reached the obsession point when I own a pair of Manolo's and can't wear them with anything

To keep the thread somewhat on topic - DH and I have seen the show and think it is just another perfect of over indulgence by the baby boomer generation to bratty children who grow up feeling they are entitled to everything.

The show is spoiled kids' to the maximum. We all can sit & say how spoiled they all are, I know I do, and yet there's something to what Dana has said about the new cars on the road. Do we throw our kids $200,000 plus parties or buy them brand new Hummers? For the majority of us , NO. But it's all relative. The parents of these kids' are mega-rich, so $200K is probably like $2,000 or even $200 to the rest of us.

To a degree, most kids are spoiled these days, if compared to when we were growing up. The expectations are there, kids are surrounded by them in movies, tv, & even their own friends and neighbors.
I know I hear from my own kids about how so and so has so many cool clothes or from DS about how his friend has all the best & newest video games.

Could I afford to buy these things for my children? Probably. But as hard as it is to resist, I do (have been known to go overboard once or twice ), but I would much rather see them earn these things for themselves. It's a hard lesson as a mom to teach, because you want the best for them, but it will make them better adults in the end.

That doesn't mean she HAS to permit it in her own house. Just because kids will eventually see/or do something does that mean we should just except these things in our home? As Dawn stated, she had younger children - and yes...MTV is inappropriate for young kids.

My husband was forbidden to watch MTV or anything not Godly growing up. Actually not growing up - starting when he was about 12 or 13. He's the prime example of why going overboard on shielding your child is not a good idea because they will rebel.

About the show, I've watched a couple of episodes and was amused and horrified at such snotty and obnoxious behavior. I'm really not sure which was worse- the spoiled brats or the indulgent parents. The thing that made me laugh the most was my brother. He's a 25yr old gruff, grumbly, conservative cop who never watches anything unless it involves some sort of police action. He was riveted watching the show with my Father the weekend they did the marathon. I dunno - watching my brother watch the show cracked me up

Because I see no just cause why $200,000 should be spent on a freaking 16th birthday party. They are kids. I think this goes WAY beyond spoiling and it's just ridiculous to even think about. Sorry, my opinion.

I have watched this show and it makes me sick. That one kids pitching a fit because she wasn't going to get the whatever car it was she wanted? PLEASE!! When I got my license I got to drive a rust-colored '78 Bonneville. Guess what? I was grateful I had a car to drive. Priorities people. This is a generation of "gimme gimme gimme" and "it's all about me." I really hope these kids get over themselves before they become adults. Furthermore, I hope their parents do too.

My Sweet 16 was awesome. I had my closest family over to my house and we had a cookout. I got the average kinds of birthday gifts: clothes, jewelry, etc. The time spent with my family was worth a lot more than the gifts. That's what we need to be teaching our kids.

I stand behind my beliefs. Just because you can blow $200,000 on a b-day party for a KID, doesn't mean you necessarily should. Just because your kid wants a nose ring, doesn't necessarily mean they should get it. Just because your kid wants a Hummer and you can afford to buy them one, doesn't necessarily mean they should get one.

Again, just my opinion.

It wasn't an over the top party, just my best friends over to my house for a special dinner and a sleepover. mom got me a sugar cube corsage (anyone remember those?). surprise surprise, instead of the promised special dinner mom had something else cooked up...a full blow kids McDonalds party. omg. there I was, in total shock, walking in with my sister because she wanted a coke. there were all my friends. my boyfriend. everyone. sitting there. wearing McDonald's party hats, the whole place decorated like I was 5. it was hysterical. mortifying, but hysterical.

That show is kinda like a car accident.... you want to pass by without looking, but you CAN'T HELP IT!!! I'm sickly sucked into it. And just my 2 cents about banning shows, my parents told my sister and I no MTV and no Beverly Hills, 90210... I know that the second we were home by ourselves guess what the first thing we put on was!!! I think it's a good idea to keep an eye on what your children are watching, but that has to be backed up by good morals and values too. I suppose being able to block channels makes monitoring things a whole new ball game though.....

We block internet porn from our computers and we have a code for R-rated movies on the cable (DS#1 has the code, he's an adult, DS#2 can watch one of those movies if we give him permission and know what it is, etc.). My experience as well does not support the universality of kids "going wild" in college if they had limits in their home as kids.

Im sorry to laugh, but that is hilarious!! I will remember that for my Ds's 16th birthday. They would be mortified too! But now you have that memory and can look back and laugh.

Did anyone see the episode with the rapper's daughter? She hired uniformed people to pass out her invitations door to door while she waited in the Limo! Plus she made them tell each guest "No Gift No Party" There is no way, even if I was giving my child a $200K party would I let that fly.

does anybody know what a sugar cube corsage is? or were they only popular in my neck of the woods (santa barbara, CA)? It was a regular wrist corsages but with sugar cubes interspersed. mine had pink roses and sugar cubes. it was very pretty actually.

I am sad to admit I think I've seen every episode. It seems obsurd how these girls act, but honestly - didn't we all go to high school with at least one girl who acted like that? There was a whole herd of them at my HS - alway had expensive bags/clothes/manicures/shoes etc... and were popular because of it. Maybe not as rich as Super Sweet 16 Girls, but acted the same.

In the episode with the 2 girls who had their party at Hard Rock, I was shocked afterwards when one said "It was what I expected - nothing special".

And who in their right mind lets their 15 year old daughter buy some of those outfits? The one girl (who flew to Paris to get her dress) tried on a red dress with the chest cut out - I swear her breasts looked fake. Maybe it was her "youth"... but I could recreate that cleavage by shoving 2 tennis balls down my shirt... they just didn't look natural, but I wouldn't put it passed her parents to spring for that bill either.

I honestly don't remember her name, (this time) but she did apologize for calling her mom a Bword and swore up and down her cleavage was real. I too say they were fake and unnatural looking. I truly hope they were real because the only thing sadder than her jumping out of that "Used" Range Rover like it was trash would be her parents allowing her to have implants at 15!
