I couldn't roll an r if my life depended on it! My dh thinks I'm a freak of nature because he thinks it's so simple! So how many of you out there can't do it either?

I can't! I can sort of "flip" them, which I had to learn to do to sing in Italian, but I'll never be able to roll them. The skin that attaches my tongue to the bottom of my mouth is too far forward- apparently it's genetic, since my brother had the same problem (but worse... they had to cut his).

I can roll an R at the beginning of a word, but it's really really hard to do when it's in the middle of the word.

I cant.

When I was a kid, my mom told me I could do them when "I was older"

Im 33 years "older" and still cant do it. :confused3

Nope, I can't roll my R's either. Luckily my high school offered Latin as a foreign language so I didn't have to embarrass myself trying to roll my R's in Spanish class, LOL!

I can't do it at all. I had the same Spanish teacher two years in a row who got ridiculously frustrated with me over it. I just CAN'T do it! I can't whistle either. :rolleyes1

I can't either!! I try and try, but it just won't work!!! My mom will do it, then I will try........then everybody laughs cause I sound so silly trying!!

Well, if I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure it's genetic, so you either can or you can't. Back in 9th grade Biology I remember doing a lab (it was more a questionnaire to go around and ask other classmates) that listed a bunch of different traits to see if you possessed them or not. The subject we were working on was dominant and recessive genes.

There were things on the list such as whether you had a widow's peak hairline or did it just go straight across, did the lobe of your ear hang down a little or attach directly to your head, could you curl your tongue or not, etc. I'm thinking that one of the things on the list was whether you could roll your R's, but you know, I could be having false memories... maybe someone else out there knows for sure??

ETA: Found an article that teaches you how to roll your R's... at the bottom there is a note that says it's not known whether people who can't normally roll R's can learn to do it, but it appears some can.

Well, at least you can have fun trying!!

I can roll an R at the beginning of a word, but it's really really hard to do when it's in the middle of the word.

Same with me. I'm in speech right now, but my speech teacher doesn't make me say R words. There's one word that is really difficult to me to say. I can't say "Borrowers."

I can't. My tongue just isn't that talented.

Nope, can't roll my R's, can't curl my tongue, can't whistle and I can't dive (I am just worthless):rotfl2:

I am the only one in my family who can roll or trill my r's....frustrates my oldest because she is a first year spanish student and I am trying to help her and instead of rolling an r she spits all over me. :lmao: She's got an A in the class so I'm not to worried...yet!!

I also can't whistle either! It's pretty pathetic I can't roll r's, considering I'm half hispanic. It seems most of who can't roll r's can't whistle either, so maybe it's a structural or genetic thing. This could be a science experiment!
