who dose NOT tip MOUSEKEEPING?

I don't tip and service has varied from really great to below average. IMO, if you want to tip, that's great, but I don't think it will make your housekeeping better.

<rant>

I cannot fathom not leaving a tip! Most of my stays in places are only for a night or two so I leave one tip at the end... longer term stays I leave it each day. These people work hard everyday cleaning up our messes whether the mess be big or small.

We travel as 2 adults, we don't make much of a mess as we like to keep our stuff in one place not to keep it neat but so there's less chance of us forgetting something. After spending hundreds/thousands dollars what's an additional few bucks a day? Tips don't need to be huge; we usually tip $1 per person per night. If we ask for extra service we'll bump that up.

I can't understand the pettiness of not tipping. I don't say that to be disrespectful or to bash; I simply, personally, can't understand it. Sure if something went badly wrong I can understand not wanting to tip but let's be honest with the 10's of thousand of rooms in WDW and guests staying there what percentage actually have had an issue. I'd say that number is small.

Someone in an earlier posted added up how much more income would be added; it was an extra $6 or something to make their rate be, for example $14 -- it's still hard to pay rent, insurance, buy food etc on that salary.

I don't feel guilty at all giving someone tax free income. :) People at WDW do so much to make us smile; how about we return the favour? I don't think it's too much to ask to make someone else's day. :thumbsup2

I think that tipping a non-tipped position like housekeeping is great and very generous, but only if you, yourself, can afford it. It's not like waitstaff that is a tipped position & should be tipped accordingly.

That said, we always tip housekeeping (WDW & non-WDW), but economic times are hard now & our budget is decreasing. On our next trip, we will likely see where we are financially. If we can afford to tip housekeeping, (after we've set aside tip money for waitstaff, bell hop, other tipped positions) then we will continue to do so. Otherwise, we need to make sure that we are comfortable first. I do not consider this point of view to be petty at all.

Remember that many people who visit WDW actually make similar wages as housekeeping. They are lucky enough to be able to afford the trip. To me, tipping the tipped positions is priority. As much as I appreciate the hard work of housekeeping, tipping them is secondary to me because it is a nontipped position.

As for us, if it turns out that we can't afford to tip housekeeping on our next trip, we will definately show our gratitude towards our individual housekeepers by sending a letter of praise to WDW when we return home.

ETA: I just wanted to add that this is the most civil tipping thread I've ever come across on here! Granted I havent read through every page, but it's still going after 14 pages!!!

we didn't tip our last stay at All Star Movies and still had great service, no towel animals though. But, in my defense, I didn't know that it was customary to tip Mousekeeping. I have my envelopes ready for our next trip!

We tip at the end of our stay- and I've never noticed a difference in the quality of mousekeeping- we rec'd towel animals and anything else we needed.

I have never tipped Mousekeeping before. I didn't know we should/could. Where I live, Housekeeping is an hourly wage position although I'm sure tips wouldn't hurt any, it's not a highly paid hourly position.

That being said, I was planning to tip on our next trip, but then tips were excluded from the DDP and now I need cash for that. Put me in a tough spot that I will have to see what the money situation is like by the time we leave. With the economy being what it is, it's been tougher to save for vacation. :sad2:

I have yet to stay on property, but have stayed many times in hotels in many states and had no clue that people tipped housekeeping until reading these posts. How do people learn about this to post it on here. It's common knowledge to tip wait staff, but this doesn't seem to be.

I've also worked in the hotel industry off and on for years and I never tip housekeeping away from WDW ... thus I don't tip Mousekeeping either. In the industry it's just not a common practice. Having worked in the service industry I generally tip very handsomely at restaurants and bars and such ... like most people with experience in those types of jobs. I almost always leave a tip on my checkout morning if service has been exceptional for some reason ... but that's just me.

On 9 trips to WDW in various circumstances I've never once noticed a change in the level of service from Mousekeeping from what I'd expect ... tip or no tip.

According to WDW, it isn't customary to tip housekeeping. They don't list it as a tipped position, as housekeepers are apparently paid at least minimum wage. Restaurant servers/bartenders/bell services are generally paid below minimum wage, and tips make up the rest of their income.

Most posters appear to have a preference for tipping the housekeepers.

Housekeepers at Walt Disney World Resorts are allowed to accept tips. No where on property is a Housekeeper required to turn over tips. They are not a "tipped" position that has to claim their tips as wages, but they most certainly accept tips.

If you want to know how I know...or what verification to believe me, PM me and I will tell you why I know.

Don't stop tipping because you think it won't go to them. It your choice to tip, but it is not taken away from the Housekeeper.

Not doubting you, Courtney, but because this thread's been going for a while, I want to know if anyone has more current information. I know a woman who was a Mousekeeper in early 2007, and she was told to refuse all tips...however, I'm not sure if this was company policy, or just her manager.

And to answer the question, I only tip if:
a) the service is exceptional (for example, I was staying in a condominium for a week where housekeeping was only supposed to take out trash and make the beds; we were supposed to be responsible for our own cleaning. Our housekeeper cleaned every surface in the condo and did our dishes for us- she got a nice tip at the end of the week)

b) we have somehow done something to mess up the room in a big way (for example, when we stayed in a hotel after a hurricane evacuation and my puppy wasn't completely housebroken yet...)

Disney is the only place i do tip housekeeping. I havent always cause I didnt know better. I dont have alot I can leave normally maybe $5-$10 one yr kids and I bought a couple gifts relative to SC and left those as "tips" with special tags we made that said To MouseKeeping with Love the " " Family..
