I heard on the news last night the Mike Duffy comentary that if a terrorist attack originates in Canada on a US target they will shut down the boarder. I am worried because we have decided against flying because I hate to fly but will be driving but what if we can't cross the boarder. Basically what I am trying to find out is how difficult it will be for a born in Canada Canadian to cross the boarder if this happens????

We aren't going till Sept and have to book our ressies tomorrow....help....

What is your advise or am I getting in a panic over nothing....thanks

First off, if they shut down the border then it's shut down, period. That means if you're not a US citizen you're not getting in. I can't see them implementing that for a long period of time.

What I can see them doing is increasing security at the border and demanding passports from everyone, including Canadians. A passport is THE best form of identification when travelling.

If you're making pre-paid reservations then I highly suggest taking travel insurance that includes terrorism coverage. Right now the only one I know of that does is RBC.

I just called Travelguard (who we usually use) and they would only cover the cancellation if the Canadian government issued a travel advisory to the US.

When you think back to 9/11, the border itself was only impassable for a few days, part of this time closed completely and the rest was backlog (for airplane entry and driving across). Unless something happens the day you go or the day before I think you are worrying without reason. Relax, try not to think about it and deal with the problem if does happen. I'm sure your trip will go off without a hitch and you will have a great time!:wave2:

My advice -- take a deep breath, calm down and don't worry about it. As has been mentioned by others, if the border is closed the border is closed -- ain't nobody getting through.
Sorry to hear you have decided against flying (it really is safe and fun), but since you are driving what is the significance of having to book by the 28th?

[Royal Canadian, in answer to your question I would assume that it is because the 7 for 5 Dream Maker package has to be booked by June 28th. I would agree with getting travel insurance and RBC is the only one who covers terrorism. Hope this helps.

They'll shut down borders if ANY terrorist attack happens again, not just if it originates in Canada. Which makes sense. You're booking for September... don't worry about it. They haven't even raised the terror alert level.

And if you're worried about border crossing, spend the money on passports. We didn't because a U.S. Immigration official told me they are not required, and won't be any time soon because as soon as they are, it will all be turned around on U.S. citizens in short order and they don't want that. His opinion was "terrorists can get passports, too. Doesn't mean a whole lot in the end." (which is true... one of the suspects on their latest list has a Canadian passport)
