I remember last year people were making the paint cans for xmas gifts and i bought mine and never made them. i recently found mine and decided that i want to give it a try. does anyone have any pics or the measurements i need??? i bought a couple gallon size ones and a couple of pint size ones.

where's the class teacher??? MISS BUFFY are you in your classroom today???
any chance of getting a tutorial??? please!!! i think you made them last year right?

i went apple picking last weekend. i could give the teacher an apple!!!!!

:teacher: :cool2:

OOOO- me too me too!! :teacher: :flower3: <-- for the teacher!

OK I have a stupid question. What the heck do you use the paint can for? Why would a teacher want one?

My son's classroom teacher's got paint cans that were altered and decorated... they loved them.. they use them to store candy in for special treats and anothe teacher said she really enjoyed using them to store legos/dominos in.. that they were the perfect size to store in a small space!

Thanks Piratesmate, I couldn't get the search engine (Yet again) to work...and I couldn't find them manually w/ the darn phone ringing off the hook!

Oh I didn't even try to use the DIS' search engine. I used Google & just made the first term "DIS" - that limits the hits nicely. :lmao: :lmao:

I don't have time to do the cans now. Maybe in time for xmas though.

I'm actually editing those instructions now, the Mod Podge I have found does not hold up over time on cardstock. Stick with the terrifically tacky tape. It's red and is made by provo craft.

doing a quart can is easier since you don't have to mess with the handle, which BTW, don't come off now. For either size can measure to the inside of the rim to get your height. For both cans you will need 2 sheets of 12 x 12 paper.

Let me know if you need specific help. We can always get together and make them too.

thank you for the ideas and the info. i'm gonna try the whole measure thing and see if i can do it. i love the look of the quart size one because it has no indents in the can. but how much can i put in that one??? i like the bigger one for the size, but not to sure about the handle and getting the paper around it. dh said maybe i could punch a hole in it for the handles? maybe. we'll see. i love the pics of the one in the link. i hope mine will look as nice.

buffy,
how about a few ?'s for ya? did you paint the top of the can? and what about the apples on the lid? are they paper too? and what about the keys? i bought mine at lowes the other night and no keys. do i have to ask and what the heck do they look like?
sorry for so many ?'s!!!!

and how about that ribbon on the top? is it just tied on?

Home Depot has keys. I just put together eight cans for a retreat. I bought the gallon size. For the top I used a CM circle of the cutting system with a blue blade. It lays perfect on the top of the can.

For the can, I use two pieces of 12 x 12 paper cut at one notch less than 7 1/2" (I know this will make sense to you when you look at a ruler). I cut lots of ribbon at lengths of 36" each. The ladies can either use the ribbon to go completely around the can or cut it to smaller lengths and tie onto the handle.

Buffy said to cut the hole for the handles to use the smallest circle of the CM cutting system and the red blade 1" down from the top of the paper. It works perfectly.

Whatever the ladies want to use their altered can for is up to them. I am thinking of doing a couple for Christmas wrapping.

not a stupid question at all. The one I did that said Emily on it, I did for a baby shower gift. I put in a blanket, some bibs, onesies, wash clothes etc.
The one's for DS's teacher, I put margarita mix in one and gift cards to local restaurants in the other.

OK lets see here.

The top of the teacher ones is paper. A cd is pretty close to the right size, I used it as a template. But you can paint them too.
The apples are paper too, another template that I traced and cut. I didn't have any of those fancy gadgets yet. I just looked and I have an Apple on the Plantin Schoolbook cart. I can cut some out if you would like. I applied the base paper on the lid, with mod podge and then applied the apple with mod podge too. Then I just covered the heck out of it mod podge.

The keys are usually with the other paint supplies, just ask and you may get some for free or the paint dept can tell you where they are. They look like a flat screwdriver end that is hooked a bit with a loop for a handle. Just tell the paint people you need paint can keys.

The ribbon is tied, I think single knots, but maybe double. I can go look in a bit after the kids go to bed. That actually took the longest to do. I think I used 4 spools of ribbon. I cut them all into about 3 - 4 inch strips and just randomly grabbed from the bucket and tied it on. Took about an hour. Leave enough ribbon long enough to tie the key to the handle and still have it reach all the way around the lid.

the handle is really easy to get around. The 2 pieces of paper are going to meet up at the handle, you just need to punch a 1/2 circle about 1 1/2 inches down to fit 1/2 way around the hole, like an the end of an old fashioned movie ticket.

I'll go look for my template after bedtime and snap a pic.

just snapped some pics, I will down load them and post after baths and bed time stories.

But for now here are some McYummy pics to keep you company:

I made this one to carry my tools in for the SDV last year. It was a huge hit! LOL

Here is some more info.

The key

the template

the dimensions for the big can:
DSC_0005-10.jpg

top to bottom - 7 7/16 inches
1/2 way round (will need 2) - 10 13/16 inches

hole - top of paper to top of hole 1 1/16
the hole is 1/2 of the 1 inch Creative Memories hole punch. Any punch will do.

You will need 2 of these pieces

small can dimensions:
top to bottom 4 10/16 inches
DH says to reduce to 5/8ths but for those like me that are ruler challenged you go with what you know!

all the way around - 14 inches
So I would either cut 2 pieces that are 7 1/2 inches to have 2 sides or cut 12 inch piece and fill in with a panel of coordinating paper.

If your edges are uneven on the top and bottom of the can, wrap them with ribbon to cover up any mistakes. Like the teacher and Captain Jack cans.
