My mom and stepdad sold their 1800 sq foot house in 2006 and moved to a low maintenance retirement village of mobile homes. This is in Tucson,AZ so they don't have to worry about tornados, hurricanes or old pipes freezing. It was the best decision for them. Her husband has arthritis so he no longer has to do lawn care. She couldn't do it because she's allergic to red ants- so this is a big relief to them both. She's planning to retire at 62 in feb and can really go ahead and do this since their overhead is soooo low. They pay about $60 a month in rent on their property and another $40 a month for maintenance. Their taxes are only $300 a year and every two years they have to renew their registration at DMV.
Its 1500 sq feet and provides them with a lot of storage, a master bath that they never thought they would get. I think it was a great move for them as they can retire nicely now with no mortgage and savings in the bank from the sale of their reg house. Its definately not for everyone but it works for them. I would never consider it here in FL but the weather would be the major consideration for that.

our landlady, she's awesome. And growing up, we rented our house for 17 years, until my mom got re-re-married and moved across the country.
