Who are these folks giving you a hard time about buying DVC?

I'm always shocked to read that people are afraid to tell their friends and families that they own DVC.

I've NEVER been afraid, and never had a bad reaction -- quite the opposite, in fact. People are downright glad for us and sometimes just a bit jealous! We've owned for more than 16 years now. I have a DVC plate on my car, wear my DVC clothing....and the reaction is ranges from curious to WOW! But it's never -- gee you're stupid for buying a Disney timeshare.

We also take people all the time with us on our DVC vacations so perhaps that colors their view as well. And the pictures win over the rest of the crowd, I guess.

Some people are anti-everything. Most everyone in our circle knows and is happy that we occasionally invite them along. There is, however, one group who scoffs at it. It's DH's sister, and she thinks Disney is stupid and timeshare ownership is stupid. So, we just don't talk to her about it! Instead, we invite his brother and family along occasionally and have a blast with them!

You are lucky. My dad would lecture me if he knew we bought in, even though we researched it for 5 years, got a good deal through resale and paid cash for it. He has said multiple times that he can't believe intelligent people buy timeshares. It's just not worth it for me to tell him. I could show him the spreadsheet we used to decide and that WDW is our happy place, but he would still roll his eyes and lecture. He's a great dad, but I just don't want to go there. DH's parents are different - so happy for us and watching the kids for us in September when DH and I go alone for a long weekend.

I guess we are lucky as well. We know 4 other families that own DVC besides us. We have two other sets of freinds who own a timeshare somewhere else. Although we don't tell everyone that we own DVC our very close friends know as does our family. We have been fortunate enough to always get a postive reaction. Though I can definately see in some cases where it would be best to just keep it quiet so to speak.

Maybe that's what they mean by "Disney's best kep secret"! :rotfl2:

NICE! :rotfl:

My parents and I are members and my dad's sister and brother and their families own in DVC too! I've only gotten the negative reaction from my mom's brother and his family who think Disney World is overrated (except for Epcot...yeah, one of those). Then I got the negative reaction from one co-worker, but he doesn't see reason to take vacations at all so I consider the source there.

I have a coworker who absolutely hates everything Disney. She visited WDW once and said NEVER again. She speaks negatively about our visits often. I let it roll off my back. I do wonder though why it matters so much to her what we do with our vacations? :sad2:

I think it also depends on the kind of circle of friends you are involved with... We have some friends who are Disney addicts like we are and they love it that we are DVC owners. Other people who don't take vacations that often or who go camping and canoeing don't get it at all. A third group thinks the money is a whole waste and you have been ripped off by cunning tricksters.

I think you have to be at peace with the decision yourself and then share that information with those who can "handle it" if you know what I mean..

I remember talking to the preschool moms right after we purchased(back in 2006). Now this was a crowd that thought they knew everything about WDW etc. Well none of them had ever heard of DVC, one thought it was the Disney Visa rewards card program.

You would have loved to see the expressions on their faces. Some of these women had multiple trips to WDW and how did this newbie "get invited to join this special Disney club". :rotfl2: Well we all know it's very easy to join, just open your wallet.
