So how many of you out there have carry on luggage that doesn't fit the new standard? Better yet, how many has recently purchased such luggage like myself, but are missing it by just one inch? 😖😖😖

What new standard? The published standard for all of the domestic airlines I am aware of is the same, and slightly smaller than just about all of the "carry-on" sized luggage sold. On the major carriers it's never been a problem, but I'm also aware of the ULCCs that are happy to charge their exorbitant fees for those slightly oversized bags. I'm flying to MCO next week on Delta and don't have any concerns that my carry-on is going to cause any issues.

So there's a fear that AA will crack down OR reduce carry on dimensions to match the policies in Europe. No change has been announced yet.

Since I haven't been to Europe in eight years, I'll worry about it if something is actually announced for the US.
Don't see it happening. There would have to be buy in from UA and DL in order for it to happen. If AA does this by themselves, they will be dumped by just about everybody. The only way I see this happening is if the DOT states that they are going to get fined for failing to follow their published policy. I see no chance the incoming administration will push for that rule change.

American does not charge for a carryon even with Basic economy. Jet blue is now doing the same all others that I am aware you need to purchase the class above Basic to have a Carry on included. The normal budget airlines excluded with varies terms.
For the most part I have rarely seen the size enforced but have on occasion. 22x14x9 are very easy to find and most actually smaller unless you have a hard side as the wheels can extend down further which make them at the limit. The bigger issue is larger bags will not fit in overhead bins with the wheels facing in and take up a lot more space if they are placed sideways. Being many pay for this space these days airlines should enforce the rules.

Bags will take the same amount of space no matter how you orient them.
What varies is how much space is available in the overhead.

Regardless, at least in the US, the main airlines are not changing their bag size policy, and there's been no talk about strictly enforcing it.

We flew SW on Thursday. The gate agent went on about new bag restrictions and was threatening to check bags if they didn’t fit on the measuring thingy. I hadn’t heard anything about that and was nervous my bag would be a hair too big. I was A1, and he just let me walk past. I have no idea if anyone after me was stopped or the agent just liked to scare people.

Edit: Flew out of Tucson this morning and no big announcement about bag sizes. Currently getting ready to board in Denver, and we’re getting the same speech we had on Thursday about new bag sizes.

That article doesn't give the potential new dimensions. I found one a couple of weeks ago and measured my carry-ons and they are all still within the potential new measurements. (No I don't remember where I found them. And I've cleared my cache since.)

I think it is 22 x 14 x 9. That may be the actual current standards. Mine is 22 x 14 x 10, wheels and all. So that does not fit now.

I just assume airlines will continue to arbitrarily enforce policies. An AA gate agent once made me check my carry on after I easily fit it in the size box, claiming it didn't count because I had to push it down. I think he just wanted people to gate check without saying it. I've also used that same bag as a carry-on for 10+ AA flights and dozens more on other airlines, never had an issue.

I’ve seen this happen flying Delta on CRJ-900s that I know my bag will fit in. The gate agents will just arbitrarily give everyone pink tags regardless, probably because they want to push out.

Re: new restrictions, I don’t think they’re necessary. They need to just enforce the existing limits. Especially to/from MCO where you have Ma and Pa Kettle taking up the overhead with a million bags. I have Away bags that fit a ton in them while meeting the current guidelines. It can be done. They’re just letting people get away with too much.

I don't mind the pink tags, but I understand your frustration. Normally, the ramp employees are pretty quick at bringing them up. However, that all goes hell if you have a tight connection. Then they move like molasses and your bag is the last one to come up.

Murphy's Law ... every.single.time.

I don’t mind it either…it is what it is, and I’m luckily always flying direct. Coming back sometimes I just want to get home though, and it seems like when I’m the most tired my bag takes the longest to come up.

I haven’t seen them just force them on everyone in quite a while though. The last few times I’ve been on those really short hops only the people who truly had huge carryons or who boarded towards the end have gotten pink tags.

I've noticed that change since they got rid of the CR2s. In those you had to check everything, my backpack would fit under the seat, but not in the overhead on those. Now that it's all CR5, CR7, CR9 and ERJs it's not nearly as bad. I've got a 200 mile first leg on Tuesday that instead of a 5x daily CR2 is now a 2X daily E175. Shouldn't be a problem.

I'm one of those people who rush to the check-in counter when they call for people to gate-check bags. Why on earth would you want to bring a bag you are not going to open, onto a full plane, and then have to fight with the other passengers for overhead bin space, when you can check it for free? If it doesn't fit under the seat I prefer to have it under the plane. The whole boarding process went to hell when they started charging to check bags.
