Overwhelming is right! My understanding is that it's called the room of tears because that's what the newly elected Pope typically does - starts crying due to the sheer enormity of the undertaking and responsibility he's just received.
Can you imagine being responsible for guiding the eternal souls of 1.2 BILLION people?
