White Plains (westchester) Airport

This is unlikely to help you, but I just had to share.

I live in a complex called Belle Fair right next to the airport, but still about a 2 mile drive to the front entrance to the airport. You see the Belle Fair pool right before you land in the airport.

My husband hates to spend money. He would not pay the $220 for the parking and thinks it would be outrageous to pay $20 for a taxi to take us 2 miles.

So he drops us off with the bags, drives our car home, and jogs back to the airport in time for our flight. Of course, he is a bit nutty but no skin off my back.

The neighborhoods around the airport are nice and safe (think Greenwich, Armonk and Rye Brook). It would be a bit complicated but if you would really like to save money, you could consider parking your car on a side street a mile or two away (of course check the parking rules) and take a taxi to the airport.

OMG that is so funny! No way would my hubby do that!

We're ok with the hotel and free parking - I think the kids will enjoy it. I dont think hubby would leave the car on a street either. Thanks for the idea though.

What a great idea. I like Westchester Airport. its very convienient to southwestern Connecticut. We have parked there before with no trouble. My trips were to other cities and shorter duration. I booked Jet Blue out of HPN for the first time to WDW. We are using a car service. Have fun.:woohoo:

How would you go about getting from HPN to NYC via train or light-rail?

There's a shuttle bus that will take you from the airport to the train in White Plains, about 15 minutes away.
I'm not sure of the cost, but it's not too much. Someone here may have more info or just go to the Westchester County Airport website.

Is the La Quinta Inn in Armonk closer to the airport than their hotel in Elmsford?

Has anyone ever flown United to/from White Plains?

I noticed that they use the Saab 340B aircraft which holds less than forty passengers for their flights from White Plains to either O'Hare or Dulles, and that's a pretty tiny aircraft, especially on a two-hours+ long flight from Chicago.

My wife and DS4 flew out of WP airport in July on AirTran because she got a really good deal, and I don't think that we would do it ever again. We didn't have so good an experience.

The airport is small and crowded. I dropped my wife off which was convenient, so we didn't have to worry about the parking because it was only her flying.

She also had a delay on the way home due to storms so I ended up circling the airport for an hour while she sat on the tarmack because there was no gates open. I was parked on the side of the raod right at the opening of the airport with some other cars awaiting to pickup until security came along and made us circle continously. There was no other place to park because the parking area was full.

Take this with a grain of salt. My bad taste for the airport was helped by weather issues. Drop off and pickup was nice though as far as loading and unloading. It was just soo crowded inside with check-in. My wife stated that there was no place to eat past security, and it there was one big waiting area in which all of the gates came off so it was crowded and not all that pleasant.

We live right next to Bradley, and we didn't realize how convenient and how cheap the parking is there in comparison. Also, the option for food is nice at Bradley. We would think twice about flying out of WP again because the overall feel of the airport is small and crowded with no parking, but like I said, it was a bad first impression and it may have been different if the weather had cooperated.

HPN now has a cell phone lot and food (I use that term lightly) past security.

Lisa -- I'm from 06001. No security issues. Felt more secure than leaving car on a street in any city. It snowed when we were away, and there were about 10 cars covered with snow when we returned. Parking is right near the office.

You can call the hotel from HPN, which is less than 10 minutes away. I think the shuttles are scheduled every half hour. [We got bumped by Northwest; limo'ed to Laguardia, and limo'ed back to LaQ so we didn't need to call.]

As I recall, the rooms were roomy enough. Maybe they have roll-aways. And they have good waffles in the morning at the free, self-service breakfast.

Excellent! Thanks for letting me know. ;)

Since hotels in White Plains are substantially less expensive than those in NYC, can anyone recommend any for under $125.00 per night, and is it cumbersome for visitors to NYC to stay in White Plains and take the local light-rail system (Metro North?) when planning to visit NYC for one or two days?

Thanks!!

White Plains is, on some schedules, the first stop out of New York, so I wouldn't imagine it would be that difficult. I'm not that familiar with the hotels in the area, so I don't really have a recomendation for that. We just booked a night at the La Quinta Inn before our Disney trip. They have shuttle service to the airport, I'm not sure about the train station though. I think regular rates start at about $120 a night. We checked out the Crown Plaza as well, but that was a bit more.

Remember too that the cheapest way to get your metro north train tickets into the city is by mail. You can order them online and they ship them out in just a few days. They are a bit more if you buy them from the machines on the train platforms (and then you run the risk of the machines being broken). They are full price if you buy them from a window inside one of the stations. If you buy them on the train, they add on a surcharge of about $5.

The bus is definitely NOT an option.

Kent Place in Armonk (where I live) is in the center of town. Because of parking problems, the cops have been out in full force chalking tires. The police station is within walking distance and I have to believe that any car sitting in the lot (which is not very large) for days on end will be ticketed/towed.

Kirby Plaza is the train station in Mt. Kisco. To park you need a permit (you need to be a resident) or pay for a daily spot which is only good for 12-24? hours.
