I've read here that several of you bring white noise macines with you on the cruise. Since our rooms are on the "noisy room list" (2122 & 2124) and there is little hope of us changing them, I'd like to look into it. Where would I find them? THANKS! :o

We got our portable battery operated white noise machine from Sharper Image, although I've heard that cheaper versions are available at discount stores like Wal-Mart.

Both my dd and I each have one and they both also came from Sharper Image. What I really like about them is that they can run on either battery or electricity.

White noise:

Short answer - A fan or electronic device that can emulate noise that falls into the spectrum of white light, which is used to drown out other noises.

Long answer -

The adjective "white" is used to describe this type of noise because of the way white light works. White light is light that is made up of all of the different colors (frequencies) of light combined together (a prism or a rainbow separates white light back into its component colors). In the same way, white noise is a combination of all of the different frequencies of sound. You can think of white noise as 20,000 tones all playing at the same time.

Because white noise contains all frequencies, it is frequently used to mask other sounds. If you are in a hotel and voices from the room next-door are leaking into your room, you might turn on a fan to drown out the voices. The fan produces a good approximation of white noise. Why does that work? Why does white noise drown out voices?

Here is one way to think about it. Let's say two people are talking at the same time. Your brain can normally "pick out" one of the two voices and actually listen to it and understand it. If three people are talking simultaneously, your brain can probably still pick out one voice. However, if 1,000 people are talking simultaneously, there is no way that your brain can pick out one voice. It turns out that 1,000 people talking together sounds a lot like white noise. So when you turn on a fan to create white noise, you are essentially creating a source of 1,000 voices. The voice next-door makes it 1,001 voices, and your brain can't pick it out any more.

We were so tired every night that we could have slept with 999 voices in our room!

Just take a cheap battery operated radio and turn it to the very end and turn up volume....sounds obnoxious at first, but will drown out other noises and is a cheap alternative...

This is the one I have

It's only about six inches long and the top part folds down.
I bought mine three years ago. They're really hard to find now.

Thanks for bringing this up :) Have to look into it. I normally travel with a fan because hotel AC's usually turn on and off and that wakes me up. A constant droning or running of the fan masks it. I was trying to figure out how I was going to transport my fan on board! This might be a better alternative :)

I love mine. We usually sleep with a fan but my hubby gave me a sound machine before our last cruise. Mine does the white noise but it also does the Ocean(plus a few other sounds) I love it! I was going to save it for vacations but now I use it all the time:p I think he got it at Sharper Image.

I have that one too and I love it. It goes everywhere with me. It stays in my office when i am not travelling.

For those that would rather have a fan, I got a great one at WalMart a few weeks ago for our trip to Ireland (no air conditioning and I can't sleep if it's not cool!). Anyway, it's about 6-8", black plastic, square shaped, and folds down so it doesn't take up as much space in your suitcase. It was less than $10 and runs on 6 D batteries or electricity. I found out in Ireland that running it all night on batteries they last 3 nights.

Tune the TV to a non-signaled channel. Turn down the volume and you have the hissing sound of the background radiation left over from the big-bang! Now that is white noise!

Do you guys really think that those white noise machines will cover up the noise on deck 2? When they turn on those thruster things early in the morning when docking, it's like a plane coming in for a landing in your room, and it goes on and on and on. I'm not sure any amount of noise could disguise that!

How do we figure out if our room is noisy or not?

For reference, we are in 2632, cat 9, I believe, deck 2, aft, Wonder.

I am an extremely light sleeper and any little sound will wake me up. We were on deck 2 on our last cruise and nothing woke me, except when the closet doors kept sliding back and forth with the movement of the ship. I finally had to get up and put towels down so they wouldn't hit anymore.
