Whispering Canyon Cafe

You said that you can't imagine someone travelling to go to WCC. As if the food was not worth the time. It must be worth it to a lot of people. Your post just came off as if people are idiots for wasting their time going to eat there. If that was not your intent, then I apologize.

No it was not my intent to suggest anyone is an idiot. Naturally lots of people eat here and some may feel it worthwhile to make a special trip for this one meal. Nothing about WCC would inspire me to travel here just for that one meal, although it was a fine and enjoyable meal since we were already staying at WL.

I think that since the skillet meals are their signature food, I can see how someone not interested in that would not go out of their way to eat there. But I think that it is worth it if a person likes the skillet meals.

Heck, we like going just to have an excuse to visit Wilderness Lodge. My favorite WDW resort lobby (no offense, AKL).

A lot of times for a lot of people, where they choose to eat doesn't necessarily revolve around the food itself. For some, it's nostalgia.

Take us, for example. WCC was our very first meal on our very first Disney trip. And it was an absolute blast. The food was amazing, our server was awesome and hilarious, the kids were blown away that they could have a milkshake with dinner (seriously, dad???) and it was the best start to a great trip. Ever since then, we chase that nostalgia on every trip we go on.

Is the food the best in all of WDW? Certainly not, but it's pretty good (and, we're admittedly carnivores).

But dining isn't always just about the food.

I did not realize I needed to put a disclaimer on my post that my opinion does not represent that of everyone else on the Dis Boards so I wouldnt be unfair or accused of putting people down. Sheesh.

In fairness, it is a bit odd and seemingly random to create an entire thread for the sole purpose of saying "I don't get the big deal about (insert restaurant/ride/park/resort here)."

Your OP didn't ask for advice, differing opinions, alternative viewpoints, offer the possibility you missed something, etc etc the way most informed and engaged posts do. And then you sprinkled in a few "LOL"s for good measure to demonstrate how amused you apparently are at how there are actually people who actually enjoy this restaurant LOL.

Perhaps just a bit of self-reflection would help? Like, imagine someone starting a thread for the sole purpose of dumping on your very favorite thing about WDW for no reason and how you might react?

We love WCC and would go out of our way. I can not comment on any other kids meals than the Salman.. My 11 YO wanted salmon (not a big meat eater) a few years ago and they did not have it on the adult menu for lunch at least I can tell you the portion was tiny and in no way was a meal for him and he is of average size... Other than that the Skillets are great and OP if you go for Dinner they now have other options that are not meat. As I said I can not comment on what you had but I have learned that some things Disney serves are just not very good but they have them as an option... in other words like all places stick with what the restaurant is know for and in the case it is meat..... but I have heard the other Skillets they have added are good but again I can not comment but would assume they are popular as not everyone likes a lot of meat and even if you are a big meat eater sometimes you want something different.

I enjoy the lobby as well (I enjoy the DVC side a lot as well because of the train room -not the real name as there is a history- if you have not been) however the lobby at AKL has taken the awwww factor away for me being AKL is so much larger... I sort of feel like WL I now a miniature version of AKL but the theming of WL is very different.

We are staying at Universal and then offsite for our Disney portion. We have 2 ADRs at restaurants outside the park. Dinner at Whispering Canyon and Lunch at Saana.

JMO but dining at any Disney restaurant is about the total package - atmosphere, location, etc as well as the food itself. In most cases I am not expecting a true "gourmet" meal.

I hope WC is a "fun" experience for our kids (11 and 13) who are both meatetarians.

Because I was not posting to ask for advice... The LOL was to imply I was not upset or disappointed and did not find anything wrong with the restaurant or the meal. Why on earth would I (or anyone) think it is funny that other people enjoy a restaurant? I understand typing on a message board can be easily misconstrued, but folks are making some big assumptions about the meaning of my post.

This is a discussion board, and clearly there are opinions all over the place. It is not only for warm and fuzzy positive reviews. My opinion is I would not go out of my way to eat at WCC again. Nothing wrong with the people that love it and me not loving it is perfectly acceptable too. And no, I do not need to self reflect about how I would feel if someone did not want to go out of their way again to eat at my favorite restaurant. I know I would feel. I would be fine with it and not take their opinion personally.

Perhaps someone wondering about going to WCC will read all of our different opinions and it will help them decide if they want to schedule it in or not.

I was there during the hurricane (that did not really hit Orlando) last week and I did see the vegetarian option skillet. I am normally quite the carnivore and am fine with large portions. The night we ate there was Monday, I believe, on labor day. We had been eating some fairly heavy meals and I was just not able to handle much food that night BUT I also knew I needed to eat because they were closing the parks early the next day and the airport was closing. We had been scheduled to leave on a flight Monday morning that was cancelled.

lol- so our vacation weekend was unintentionally extended to a vacation week. The skillets other people had looked good, but it was an enormous amount of food. The women at the table next to us were blown away by the portions. Not in a bad way-they were just surprised.

In my first post I did want to let other posters know they can order the kids menu there. Not the kids sized skillet but regular kids meals. And I was completely happy with my kids meal. It was still more than I could eat... so it must have been bigger than the salmon your son received. :-) Probably the chicken and cheese quesadilla ingredients are cheaper than salmon so that might explain it. The variety of the kids meal selections was pretty good too.

We stayed at WL last week and ended up eating at WCC 4 times, 3 times for breakfast and once for dinner. Food was excellent every time, and service was excellent as well. And you do get a LOT of food!

Our first visit we explained to desk that our son was on autism scale and asked if we could be seated in a quieter area in possible. They did so and we had a lovely time. Our waitress was great! And another waitress heard about our request and stopped by to chat several times (her grandson is on the scale too) - we left a nice note with our receipt about both of them - they were just lovely.

Then the manager stopped by our table at our next meal to thank us for the note! :)

At breakfast DH got the Heritage skillet and I usually ordered another entree - but they brought so much food for him I helped him finish some of it. Biscuits and gravy were so good! When we both ordered the skillet they seemed to bring less because it all came in one. But we did not go hungry!

Dinner we both ordered the same skillet and once again it came out combined but between appetizer and cornbread and coleslaw (also good and I don't like coleslaw!) and the meat and the potatoes and green beans and so on it was hard to do it all justice.

Really, really good brisket, chicken, ribs, sausage, everything was just really good!!! And it was very easy to get last minute ADRs which was a total bonus as we had to change our schedule around to compensate for DH and DS getting tired and ending up hating the high end places I had booked - sigh - :) I threw in the towel on that one early and just started rescheduling!!!

All in all, I would say that WCC was just "our style" of food and so was a great fit for our family. Tastes vary! And having it right there at our hotel made it super nice.
