Which Windows XP should I download??

No problem, I see you edited your comment to remove the question of why I recommended none, so maybe I should delete the replies.

To answer the question posed in the edited version, It is true that XP can do that, but Shep was asking whether Browneyes could do a system restore to go back to ME, which would require a full system backup, from prior to updating. At least that's how I read the question.

I think you guys summed it all up...:)

I went form ME to XP. Reboot a lot less often. Hate to say giving Bill Gates more money was a good investment but it was.

No need for the office vereion unless you are going to manage networked pc across a network.

We got Pro XP for price of home XP through a special... We love it... had alot more problems with ME than we do with XP... We are glad we made the switch!... And I am completely computer illiterate, to boot!!

With computers, you essentially get what you pay for. DW and I both work in computer support. DW for a large Insurance company and I for a private boarding school. DW has a support department with nearly 20 percent of the personnel working for he company. Myself, we have a staff of 3. DW supports windows and I support Macs and a few PCs. to completely replace or restore a Mac takes me 2 to 5 minutes. On a PC it takes about 2-3 hours. There are software and backup products that allow us to shorten the time to restore a PC but they are usually beyond the cost of a home user, on the other hand, every Mac comes with everything needed. XP has been the most stable version of windows I have used, but it is also the most expensive to support because of Microsoft's new license which prevents users from reinstalling after 3 times without contacting Microsoft support for an unlock code. Make sure you don't accidentally install the same copy of XP on more than one computer lest you want to disable both computers and have Microsoft legal contact you. what about the old statement that there is no software for Macs but there are tens of thousand programs for PCs, just another myth. Most of the programs for PC are junk and even Microsoft writes programs for the Mac, some of which are better than the windows version. In the end, you will need support at some point so buy what you can get help for from a friend or neighbor or even the 10 year old kid who plays in you yard.:smooth:

If this is a myth, then why is the PC software section at your local Frys or Best Buy about 6 times bigger than the Mac section?
Most of the programs for PC are junk
Huh? Where does this come from?
even Microsoft writes programs for the Mac
MS Office is about it; and why? Because Corel and Clarisworks are not compatible with what most people are using; PC's...
If you're working with graphics files that are processor/memory intensive, buy a Mac. You'll make beautiful movies. If you want to surf the Internet and be compatible with what's probably at your office, buy a PC. Simple...

I resisted the xp thing for as long as I could (was using ME and 98) but this year at school, one of my programming classes needed new software. So, they gave all the students the software and a copy of windows xp pro to run it on. (It wouldnt run without XP)
I reformatted my laptop before i installed the xp pro and it runs great now. much more stable than it was before with 98. Also, i just recently purchased a new desktop that had the home version of xp preinstalled. I have no problems with it either. They both work fine for me.
On the other hand, someone i know installed xp on a machine that was running 98 without reformatting first and he had all sorts of problems.
So, if u are going to upgrade, my advice is save everything that is important, then reformat first, then install the xp.

Another thing to consider is the fact that the software i needed would not run without XP. this is the first program i have come across with this requirement but it may be a sign of things to come.

Upgraded from ME to XP last year and have had no problems whatever. Very stable, a joy to use. Rarely reboot, usually only for certain software upgrades or new software.

I installed XP prof. on my laptop a few days before i moved to school... I find it much more stable then ME. But yes, i had upgrade problems, but nothing I couldnt sit down and take 5mins to figure out, and I had to reinstall a couple of my digital camra programs. But I say go for the upgrade, and if you can, reformat before you install it. I also had to restart my computer once, or twice a day... and right now I'm running on my 4th day (maybe longer, i just looked at my online time for AIM), and it still running perfectly fine.

just my 2 cents :bounce: :jester:

I use windows XP Professional i find it ok I have used win 99 & ME. Thay say XP is faster but i did not see much difrence to 99 & ME. Graphics on XP are very good and there is a lot more choice. IT depends on what you are after and what you use it for.I find it beter for digital photo work. All in all giveing the choice i would have to say i would go for 99 or ME for ease of use.

My son has Home and I have Professional, we have had them since the first day it was out. We had our ME uninstalled and then Installed XP. We haven't had any problems with XP and love it! I think Dan's a big fan of XP too, and knows a lot more about computers than I do...he's the one to ask.
