Yikes! :confused3
Trying to decide which data and/or text add on I should get for our trip.
Have an iPhone 4 with Rogers.
I would like to use the phone for: apps, Twitter and checking e-mail.
I won't be sending any photos or videos unless I'm connected to wifi.
Can anyone offer some advice or experience?

Depends on your usage ...

I usually add the $30 /10M data pack with the $40 /70 min voice pack and have lots for left over. I'm using a Blackberry.

Hope it helps!

For texting I usually just get the US texting package. They are relatively cheap.

As for Data either way you're going to be paying quite a bit. I find that their data packages don't do me justice since I'm a heavy user.

I recently added their One-Rate US data plan to my currently data plan. It's an extra $10/month and you can use your data in the US the same as you would in Canada and not be charged for usage (unless you go over). If you visit the US a lot it might be worth it. I do not know if you can add it then take it off right away. I added it with no problem but my friend added it to his phone and they made him extend his contract. I'd call them and see what they can do for you in that aspect if it's something that you want to consider.

Hope this helps!

I've got a 'droid phone with Rogers. I'm just leaving it in airplane mode the whole time at WDW. The plans with Rogers will cost me $70 plus usage (times 2 phones!) :scared1: According to the sticky thread at the top of this forum, a PAYG Phone is only gonna set me back about $20 including airtime. We'll but two. I'll have my NetBook with me and free wi-fi at the resort for surfing. I can live without my wait times app considering how much I'll save, and I'll send my temporary number out to the couple of people who I think should be able to disturb me on vacation.

We just add the travel voice packs, $25 for 40 minutes , and set up a router in the room to get our email and web access.

This means we cannot get our email or use any of the apps in the park but it works for us.

Thanks everyone!

Corbisblue, they didn't mention that $10/month US one-rate when I called. I'll have to check on that to see how long I would have to keep it.

My issue is that the way I use my phone now, and with the plan I have, I really have no concept of how much data I use. I have unlimited social media use (like Twitter) and I rarely use the phone as a "telephone".

I will turn off all push notifications, and turn off roaming. I realize that the way I want to use my phone in the parks is not a necessity, so I don't want it to cost a fortune, and I can always go without if necessary.

We do usually pay for at least a few days of internet access in the room, I was just hoping to avoid that and pay a similar cost to use my phone.

Thanks again! If anyone has any further advice/suggestions, it's always appreciated! :goodvibes

If you go to Rogers website there was a big advertisement about it. I'm told you have to specifically ask for it, as they won't offer it to you (I find that stupid). You can download the Rogers app that will show you exactly your usages on your phone. Just search for it in the app store.

If you do end up getting the One Rate, another suggestion for texting messaging. If the majority of the people you text have an iPhone or Blackberry you can get an app that allows you to text message for free. There's "kik" and "Whatsapp". They both work on the iPhone and Blackberry. I'm not sure about Android powered phoens.

It uses data or wifi to send the messages. So you don't have to pay for text messages. This only really works if people you message have the same app as you though.

I use Whatsapp and don't bother getting text message packages.

The cell phone companies make this so much more complicated than it needs to be.

I'm looking into this myself, and find Rogers' prices to be an absolute joke (what else is new?).

I'd like to be able to use my phone for data while in the U.S... not a lot, but 10MB isn't going to cut it for 9 hours (minutes?) let alone 9 days... and Rogers wants $30 for that?!? I've jailbroken/unlocked my iPhone 4, and I'm wondering if I can use a pre-paid data plan by purchasing a sim card from a U.S. carrier. I see T-Mobile offers 100MB for $10, but I think only AT&T and Verizon would offer the micro sim cards. Does anyone have any experience with this?

[EDIT] Looks like I may have answered my own question. People are selling micro sims on eBay for under $10, and with AT&T for example, it looks like one could pay $20 for 100MB (not bad) and $0.10/minute (or $2/day) for calling.

I purchase the $10 add on so that each mb is $1. That seems to be the best for my usage compared to last year. I use the data with my iphone 4 for my GPS, I use the data also for texting with WhatsApp and I use it a bit while at the parks. Texts are done through my data with that app. I do not add on any other package as I make calls using the wireless at the house I am staying at with Skype or Talkatone. Hope that is an option for you, that is the cheapest way I have figured it out yet.

Good luck, hope that helps.
