Hi!
We are planning a trip to WDW in Nov 2005 (what a long time to wait!). I'm planning on one of the Dream Maker Packages (probably gold). Does anyone have any experience with travel agents who specialize in Disney trips? I've heard that some will make priority seating for you and just make the vacation easier. Does anyone have experiences or information to share? We have a long time until vacation, how soon should I contact the agency? Book our trip? Airline reservations? I know there are alot of questions but I've never done this before....it seems that there is so much information, so much to plan and do...when & where do I start? Thanks for any help!

I book everything separately to get a good shot at a good price and I always do. Never go to the Disney site. I call around and check out the best deals. I do internet searches, and compare, etc.

I would also like to know where people go to book their entire vacations if through a travel agent.

If you have your heart set on a TA, use the one's that sponser this board. Dreams Unlimited.

Wasabi girl,

I agree with the previous poster about doing things yourself, as you will find it to be much less expensive than booking through The Disney Travel Company. Disney has 2 ways of booking things, The Disney Travel Co, which is like a travel agency, I believe they earn commission, they try to book everything for you, air, transfers, room, tickets etc. they require a significant deposit, and have severe regulations on refunds. Then there is disney's CRO - central reservations, there you can book room only, and tickets only- they don't try to push you into booking anything- they just give you the rates, you can give them any discount codes you find and they will tell you what is available. If you book through CRO a 1 night deposit is required, and can be refunded up to 5 days before check-in.

Most people on the dis, esp. on the budget board ;-) book through CRO -- you can use the codes found in your local paper, or on a site like mousesavers.com to try and find the best deal. They book their airfare separately, looking for the best deals through various sites or discount airlines like Southwest. If you are not getting a rental car there a variety of ways to get from the airport to the hotel, that depend largely on the size of your group when choosing the best one. Tickets can be purchased in advance, through your local Disney Store, by phone or online. It really isn't too difficult, and there are plenty of people here to help you through, and answer questions. Most of us relish in the trip planning as much as we enjoy actually going!

You should probably decide what is most important to you, saving money, or having someone else take care of all the little details. If having someone else take care of all the arrangements so you don't have to worry is important to you, there are many wonderful travel agents ( some even help support these boards) who are throughly qualified to help you. The difference between choosing a travel agent such as Dreams Unlimited, or All Seasons Travel and choosing a local travel agent or AAA is that DU and All Seasons are very very experienced with Disney trips and really know the ins and outs of everything disney. They will probably be able to get you the best deals, and can give you a lot of great advice if you have never been.

You might also want to really check out the gold package, and price out if it will be worth it (financially) since everyone in your room must sign on for the package. I think there have been many folks who found they could not eat, or do enough everyday to justify it financially.

for the where to start.. check out allearsnet.com mousesavers.com and the DU stuff on the main disboards page, also look into purchasing a Passporter - it is a really good disney guide book, that will help you plan.. I believe mousesavers.com has it cheaper than amazon.com :)

As for the when to start.. well thats hard to say, but start taking alook at prices for hotels, and airfare-- they will definately change by next november but you can start to get an idea. Most airlines won't have their fares out for 11/05 yet.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope the information was helpful! There is really a ton of info right here on the dis too!

Thanks for your information! I thought that a travel agent would be easier, and perhaps help us to get the most bang for the buck.
I've looked into the gold package a bit and have actually two older teens and a husband who golfs and we are a family of restauranteurs, so the sit down restaurants are sort of a spectator sport for us...with tax and tip included it seems like good deal.

Do you guys think we could do better paying for each meal, and recreation, and tours separately? If we use a TA would they help us get the most from our package? It is going to be expensive, I don't have money to spend on things we won't use...

I think it really depends on what your family wants to do. I believe you can customize your Disney packages where you can choose how many meals you want or how many activites and what type of activities. I think you should show your family the different options and then choose. You can see them on Dreams Unlimited website (from this website) and print them out and present them to your family. They all should have some input on what they would like to do and what they will definitely do so you will not waste any money.

Also, I think you should do some reading. Go to your nearest bookstore and purchase some guides. See this link here: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=577531 this will help you make a choice in which book or books you prefer. I prefer Birnbaum's but that's just me. And I also picked up Walt Disney World with the Kids 2004 because we have a DD who is 9 this year.

Learn all you can about the World, read these boards (THIS IS THE BEST FORUM ONLINE--I KNOW) and do online searches for prices and then go to a Travel Agent if you still feel you need one.

This is the best advice I can give, because I have been down this road too many times with planning Disney trips to St. Lucia to Paris, to Thailand...etc. Do your homework and you will not fail :teeth: Also, after you come back from Disney you will know what you will do next time and what you will not do next time. Experience also counts for something. Good Luck!!!!!

All of the suggestions listed above are great. Normally I am one to do all the planning and preparations for trip to WDW, however this year DW and I just seem to be too busy with work and DD (2 1/2) to put forth the needed effort to get all the PS's and discounts we want.
So I turned it over to Dreams Unlimited and they (If I can give her a plug ,Susan Haas) has done a fabulous job with everything. I was a little hesitant using an internet based travel agent, but they have been great. If I have a question (and I've had many) I usually got a response within an hour, most of the time it's was within 15 minutes. It appears to me they are Disney 'Experts', I asked questions about which character breakfast to do, or what restaurant would be better for the 'Fantasmic Dinner Package' and they had all the answers (or opinions) that helped me make my decision.
You can get a 'No Obligation' quote over the web and if you do decide to go with them all they require is a $200.00 deposit. They will apply any and all discounts to your package as they come available.
IMHO I think DU is an awesome TA and will use them for any other trips coming up.

Thats just my 2cents.

I wouldn't book a Disney trip through just any old travel agent if you want to save money but I wouldn't hesitate to use one of the Disney specialty agencies that are well aware of how to use codes and will apply codes to your reservation as they come out. Dreams Unlimited is one, others are Your Magical Journeys, Mouse Ear Vacations, Small World Travel and others. Any of them will do everything they can to save you money on your trip. You let them know of anything that may qualify you for a discount (AP hoder, Disney Visa holder, Florida resident etc) and if they find a code, they will apply it and just contact you with your new, lower total. Some of them will make your PS arrangements for you as well, others will not. If you are using someone who will make them and you have something that is **really** important to you (like CRT or an Illuminations cruise) I'd still say call yourself as well to be safe; you can always cancel one if you end up with 2 of them.

I normally do everything myself but I got so tired of constantly checking (by calling or checking online) for AP rates that I decided to try a travel agent this time arround. I ended up getting an email with a PIN discount but she was still able to get me a reservation using that PIN that I couldn't book myself. She's been fantastic about all the little changes we've had to make here and there (I've added a night, added people to the reservation but only for 3 of the 4 nights and just called to add my 2 year old as well). I've been using Melissa at YMJ.

To the person who initiated this posting, I sent you an PM a little while ago.

Thanks everyone!
I appreciate everyone's help. I booked my package earlier this week with a very nice lady from Mouse Ears vacations. There was just too much to keep track of for me to be comfortable doing it all myself. Turns out my trip is Dec 2005 and we need to fit in tours, priority seatings, tee times, MVMCP and I thought it seemed like this would turn into a full time job to keep up with it all ( I wish it were my job...it would be more fun than the one I have!)
(ilovediznee, I din't get a pm yet if it was me that you sent it to)
