Thank you for the links. Could you please explain what the ratings mean? For example after the airline name it is listed: Rate Flights FLE* Events Last

And there are numbers underneath those categories. How are these interpreted? thanks in advance :)

The Rate is the rate of fatal events per million flights. They can have a high number but only have one event like AirTran because their flight amount is .17M or 170,000 flights

Flights is how many flights were used in the formula for the Rate (number is in millions of flights)

FLE - Full Loss Equivalent: This is the sum of the proportions of passengers killed for each fatal event. For example, 50 out of 100 passengers killed on a flight is an FLE of 0.50, 1 of 100 would be a FLE of 0.01. The fatal event rate for a set of fatal events is found by dividing the total FLE by the number of flights in millions.

Events is how many fatal events each one recorded.

Last is the last year that they had a fatal event.

One thing I ALWAYS do upon finding my seat is count the number of rows in front and behind me to the emergency exits. I figure if there is a problem there is going to be a lot of smoke. I can count the number of seatbacks I've passed to know what row has the exit.

Speaking of aircraft, The L1011 is my favorite. Too bad most are no longer in service with major airlines. Only three fatal incidents, 2 were pilot error, 1 was a on ground fire. Pretty good record when compared to many others.

I too fly by aircraft. You couldnt get me on a DC10.

Thank you, Tikiman for all of your input and wonderful information. I am really learning a lot.

Tikiman, according to what you have stated so far I am asuming that you would not fly with Jet Blue because their aircrafts are Airbus 320s? Is this corrrect?

I look at it this way.. If that plane goes down, either everyone is going to die or people are going to be trapped inside and severely injured and/or burned..

Based on that assumption, I would prefer to wear a parachute and sit in a folding chair on the wing.. However, all of my research has indicated that this particular seating arrangement is not allowed, so for the most part I just sit "wherever" and hope for the best.. ;)

The L1011 is my favorite as well. Lockheed started on the L1011 before the DC-10, it's direct competitor, and took longer to develop it and I think it shows. It is unfortunate that they only made 250 of them. It was also the first aircraft, from what I remember that could literally take itself off, fly and land itself all by computer. Not to mention you have the 'Ghost of Flight 401' protecting the plane, if you believe that lore.. :3dglasses

I don't know about the rest of you but I always hear that they look for the black box first (Acually orange). I have resigned myself that if something does happen they will be looking for parts instead of people so I am going dressed in an Orange jup suit. Maybe I will be the first ot be found LOL. :rolleyes1

Maybe that is why Bruce Willis wore that horrid orange suit on David Letterman last night....he had just flown in from LA!

The safest spot on the plane depends on where you place your faith? In a pilot or in God. JMHO.
