Which Savannah?

I know this has been asked millions of times but my friends are staying at the AKL in Oct and I was wondering which Savannah is the best to request. She would love her son to siton the balcony and see a giraffe! Any suggestions?

It seems Zebra Trail is winning so far. Anyone have a reason? Is it location, best animal viewing? Just curious.

We just returned Saturday (01/15/05) from AKL. All three savannas have giraffes. The Arusha savanna is the only one with zebras however. Anakole cattle are on the other savannas and we were told the zebras and cattle must be kept seperate as they don't get along. If your friend asks to be looking into the Arusha savanna, she'll get both giraffes and zebras, otherwise if she get's on one of the other savannas she'll have giraffes and cattle. We were in the Kudu Trail in the third building from the end on the fourth floor which was an excellent location (not too far from the elevators and looking into the middle of the Arusha savanna. We saw lots of giraffes, zebras, birds, wildebeasts, and some others. Both the Zebra and Kudu trails can look into the Arusha savanna. Each savanna is 11 acres, but the Arusha savanna appears larger and is also the one that has Arusha rock where the story telling takes place. The Zebra trail is on the right as you enter the lodge and on the same side as the restaurants while the Kudu trail is on the back left side as you enter (past the check in desk). You enter the lodge on the third floor and the restaurants are down on the first floor. Again I would ask for either the Zebra or Kudu trail, third building from the end looking into the Arusha savanna . Hope this helps.

That's where we stayed in '02. We were on the top floor in a Deluxe Savannah View room and every morning at sunrise, I would sit on the balcony and watch the CM's bring out the giraffe and other animals for breakfast. It was great! This would definitely be my pick again.

OOPPSSS! I knew I forgot one! I will TRY to add it!

Do you think it is just better to request that they be overlooking the ARusha Savannah or should I be specific about trail as well? All this research has made us think we may swtich here during our stay too. We need to leave our villa due to the points being double on the weekend and were thinking we may try AKL too! Now I really need to understand it better!

For giraffes, I'd say the Ostrich Trail. It isn't anybodys favorite savannah because it's relatively small, contains some 'people pens' and has a closer view of other hotel wings...but it is generally the most full of animals, IMO. (btw, we've stayed at AKL 11 times).

the nice part about the Arusha savannah is you see the other wing of the building. From the other savannahs you can see the fences and other areas which remind you you're NOT in Africa. I would request the Zebra trail, because it's on the same side of the resort as the pool and dining.
