Which Route Is Better From LGB

So I'm just wondering which is better to take from LGB to DLR. The Lakewood Blvd (19) to the CA-91 to the I-5 and Exit on Harbor Blvd. OR Lakewood Blvd (19) to the I-405 to the CA-22 exit on Harbor Blvd. *Or is there better way? I've done Ball Rd from LGB to DLR but thats way to long.*

Personally I would take Lakewood to the 405, to the 22, and off at Harbor.

LGB is right next to the 405 but a distance from the 91.

Now if you want to avoid the drive up Harbor from the 22 to DLR on you could take the 405 south to the 605 north to the 91 east to the 5 south and get off right at Harbor, right next to DLR.

Let me check those routes for you...be right back.

Okay, mapquest says it's 26 min., 19 miles using Lakewood to 91 and 27 min. going 405 to 22. I would still take 405 to 22. The distance up Lakewood is more than the distance up Harbor. But it's only minutes so either one would work.

I would totally avoid going Ball Rd, as you already learned. It's say 29 minutes, but it lies! I avoid Ball Rd. even from the 57 to DLR when I can. That street can be so busy.

You could also take Spring or Wardlow (Ball) east to the 605 north then 91 east and south on 5. That shows a few more minutes.

Traffic on the freeways is something to consider. Approx. what time and on what day (M-S) are you traveling?

Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it!

So I'll be doing this in October. I've always done this from LAX but we got better airfare on Jet Blue to LGB.

Yeah I think I'll take the 405 to DLR. Also I could stop at Costco in Garden Grove and get some things for the Hotel. Thanks again!!!

Sounds like a great plan! We always stop off at Super WM on our way to POP at WDW.

1:30 on Wed. shouldn't have any traffic.

No, no, no...you don't even need to take the freeway. ;)

Take Wardlow, which turns into Ball stright to the DLR. Or Spring (I believe) that turns into Katella and goes straight there. 17 miles away and you'll pass plenty of grocery stores along the way. :thumbsup2

We'll be going from DL to LGB on a Friday evening in mid-April -- our flight is at 9 p.m.

Advice on what time we should be pulling out of DL? We'll have a rental car to return at Enterprise and bags to check.

Also, on another thread someone recommended taking W. Katella Ave -- any thoughts on that route?

The surface street routes aren't that bad if you are going during the peak commute times of morning or afternoon. If you are traveling mid-day or evening (or weekend) then you'd probably be better off on the freeway.

As for your Costco trip, there is a relatively new Costco on Katella a couple miles past the 605. You could leave the airport to Willow and it turns into Katella (that stretch of road is actually pretty good). You'll cross under the 605 freeway the cross another major intersection called "Los Alamitos Blvd.). Travel about three more miles I think and the Costco will be on your left right on Katella. Leave Costco and keep heading in the direction toward Disneyland. You can just keep going if you want to take surface streets, or you can make a right on Knott Ave and head South to the 22 Freeway to Harbor.

Keep this in mind. Katella Ave is undergoing construction. There are still two lanes of traffic in each direction but that traffic is slowed. There is a stretch for a few miles through Garden Grove that is affected. We took that route just yesterday and it flows pretty well.

For the record, that Costco I mentioned is the one near my home that we go to all the time. We take Katella most of the way to DLR every time we go. We never get on the freeway. It takes us about 20 minutes ... sometimes less ... rarely more.

Ball is the shortest distance route - http://mapq.st/pHYCQy - or you can unclick Avoid Highways to find a route that uses freeways. Looks like you can save 3 minutes that way if the freeways are flowing.

As cyclenut says, there is construction on a portion of Katella - even the OCTA #50 bus is rerouted off of a part of it - but other than that stretch in GG east of Beach Blvd it's not bad.

We usually take Katella all the way from LGB to DLR. There are plenty of grocery stores along the way and we can pick up water bottles and snacks. The freeway always seems to take us so far out of the way. It usually takes under 30 minutes to get to our hotel.
