Which ride is worse?

We are headed down to DL in a few weeks and I am trying to get up my nerve to ride on the Matterhorn. I have trouble with dizziness on rides that have "drops". I can ride Big Thunder Mountain, but it is the most I can handle. My question is, how much worse is the Matterhorn than Big Thunder. I have tried Space Mountain and swore I would never ride it again!! Thanks for your help. Debby

Matterhorn doesn't really have any drops. I actually think Big Thunder is bumpier and faster--it gives me a headache sometimes.

The ride basically spirals down the Matterhorn. I don't get motion sickness, so I can't really relate, but I could see how the Matterhorn could make someone dizzy. You can watch it from the outside--there isn't really anything going on you can't see--and see what you think. It's fun, but not a huge loss if you don't think you can handle it. :D

I'm not sure what track tiggeroo42 rode last time, but the track I rode on the Matterhorn definately had drops, and some of them were in complete dark. It is also a very jerky ride, not smooth at all.

I love Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain, but my advice is to skip the Matterhorn. ::yes:: It certainly could make a person dizzy, even if they don't have a tendancy to have a problem with dizziness.

Stick with the rides that you know are fun for "you". Don't take a chance of ruining a day at DL over the Matterhorn. It's not worth it.

When are you going? We're going in a couple weeks too (Nov. 14th - Nov. 19th).

Hope you have fun! :earsgirl:

<font color=navy>There are two tracks for the Matterhorn. The Tomorrowland side is a bit faster and has a drop, the Fantasyland side is not as bumpy and doesn't have that drop.

The ride basically starts by going probably halfway up the mountain, then coasts its way down the tracks. It is not a smooth ride, but doesn't go as fast as Space Mountain, in my opinion.

However, if you don't like fast turns, then you might want to skip the Matterhorn.

I consider the Matterhorn to be very rough. It's very similar to Space Mountain at WDW. The Space Mountain at DL is very tame (in the ride roughness category) by comparison.

We found the Matterhorn to be very, very tame. A little bumpy, but tame.

I get motion sickness pretty easy though never from the drops. Space Mountian wipes me out and I have to actually sit for a while afterwards with a soda or some water. Big Thunder is okay. I am a bit dizzy after the ride but not horribly and will ride it sometimes. The Matterhorn is about the same for me as Big Thunder Mountain. It doesn't have any real straightaways and is almost always cruving around the side of the mountian or through the tunnels. There are a couple of small drops on it that are maybe6 - 10 feet high.

The Matterhorn is the coolest! Totally unique to Disneyland. Nothing like it anywhere...

My 4 year-old has been riding it since he was tall enough (I think the min height is 32" for this one)...

It's very tame...a little bumpy, sure....but COME ON!!! It's a roller coaster for crying our loud, not the Storybookland Canal Boats!

I think is would be a real shame to miss this one because of hyped-up anxiety... my 67-year old grandmother used to ride it with us... True the left side has that one TINY drop....but it's cool! If you want the ultra-lame, I mean tame side...board the side nearest Alice in Wonderland. (Assuming, of course , you've ridden it and actually know where Alice is, as it's got ALL THOSE CRAZY TURNS!!!) :)

The only reason I think anybody should skip the Matterhorn is due to severe back/neck problems...the seats aren't all that padded and it honestly is a bit bumpy! :)

I think you're just agonizing tooooooo much. Relax, take a deep breath and enjoy! It really is a GREAT ride!

Response to SomeSayImGoofy,

You're right, it is "tame" for a rollercoaster, but for a person who has a dizziness problem on these type of rides, which can make a person feel quite ill for a while, the Matterhorn is a ride they should consider skipping. I think that's the point that some of us were trying to convey to the person who started the thread.

But by all means, for everyone else, it is a Disney classic not to be missed. ::yes::

I guess I just don't get it.

How does one get dizzy on this ride?

No problem, though! DON'T RIDE IT! Since there's no FastPass, the line's too long, anyway!

:)

This actually sounds like vertigo rather than typical dizzyness. Getting dizzy shouldn't ruin your whole day--it should clear up within a minute or two (unless you just spun really fast on the teacups at night--it can take several minutes for me to be able to see correctly after that). Teacup type rides only do that to me if I spin really fast, and then pretty much only at night. Mission:Space at Epcot made me dizzy, but it cleared up within a couple minutes also. Boomerang at Knott's does it to me every time, but I think that has something to do with being turned upside-down 6 times in less than a minute, especially with 3 of those times being backwards, but then I'm fine within a minute or so of getting off the ride. I can't imagine getting dizzy on the Matterhorn either, but I can see how it might upset one's stomach--it is very bumpy. But drops don't make me dizzy--I just think they're fun.

Can't speak from my own experience because I have yet to encounter a roller coaster that bothers me, but my mother has ridden both Matterhorn and Big Thunder and refuses to ever go on Big Thunder again because it gives her motion sickness. She still rides Matterhorn and is fine with it. I guess it all depends on the person...

Hey my 82 yo Grandma went on all three of these mountains ! BTMRR was her fave ride !

But I agree, nothing is worth spoiling your day ! Can you send a family member early in the day, and have them help you decide ? I would say try to FL side too, it's tamer.

This reminds me of my husband. He does not have vertigo or dizzyness, he is just NOT a fan of rollercoasters.

I talked him into going on BTMRR and he loved it. We then went on the Matterhorn and he again loved it.

He was all happy to then go on Space Mountain. I warned him that it was the only one of the three that I considered a rollercoaster. He went on it and when he got off he looked like something out of a cartoon. His hair standing up and a shocked look on his face.

This was about 5-years-ago and he will still talk about the time I "tricked" him into going on Space Mountain.

It's actually my stomach that does flip flops on big dips. The reason I really want to go on it is because it will just be my daughter and I. She doesn't want to ride alone. My whole family has been on it and says go! I just wanted some unbiased opinions. Once I am off the ride, I am fine. I can ride the teacups all day as fast as we can get them to twirl and it doesn't bother me, so I don't have a problem with going around, just down. Anyway, thanks for all the advice. If I get the nerve, I will try it.

Hi Debby,

If it's just your stomach that does flip-flops, then you will have no problems riding the Matterhorn because it not a stomach flip-flopping kind of ride. It's more of a "Boy, we're going around these turns really fast!" kind of ride. As a matter of fact, you'll probably love it! :lovestruc It's a very fun ride, not a scary ride, so don't worry too much about getting your nerve up to ride it.
And if you're still a little leary, then follow the advice of SomeSayImGoofy and Judy from Boise, and ride the side that's closest to Alice in Wonderland.

I told you to skip it earlier because I thought it could make you sick if you had a vertigo problem, but if you don't, then don't miss this classic Disney ride. ::yes::

Have a great time! :wizard:

Depending on when your trip is scheduled, you might be worrying about the Matterhorn for nothing, current rehab schedule shows the ride down until November 23.

The worst part of the Matterhorn is the jerky motion of the ride vehicle moving through the ride. The restraint is a seat belt that you control how tight you make it, so you won't be getting any airtime by going over any bumps. Go on the ride once and enjoy it!

My oldest son doesn't like the drops either, refuses to do Splash or TOT again. He loves the matterhorn, pretty tame ride.
