My son wants a game called Pokemon Emerald but it is a gameboy advance game. I bought him a DS lite and was wondering if someone could recommend a DS Pokemon game. Is Emerald good?? Should I just buy that one for him?

As a pokemon Mom - there are no good DS pokemon games yet. Pearl and Diamond should be coming soon - so Emerald/Ruby are the two best now. It is a really good game. How old is your DS? I may be able to suggest some other DS games - Pokemon is a RPG (Role Playing Game) and there are some good ones for the DS.

eeyore, Thanks!

DS is 9 1/2. He has a gamecube, but this is his first hand-held system.

Would you suggest buying Emerald GBA or just wait for a new DS?

I would love some other suggestions for games!

Just bought a DS lite for older DD for CHristmas. It's my understanding that the Advance Games, at least the newer ones, are playable on DS lite. I'd call somewhere like Gamestop or EB Games and ask them. We have Ruby somewhere, I'll make her find it and try it out on CHristmas morning.

The game will play on the DS Lite, but it won't need the use of the stylus. I like the Pokemon games and find them pretty fun.

If you haven't gotten another game, I'd suggest Nintendogs or a Mario game specifically for the DS systems. My DS likes SuperMario 64. Cooking Mama is also silly fun. Myself, I am hoping for Tetris DS this holiday season. :) BrainAge is geared more to keep the adult mind young, and I don't really recoomend it for kids. Kids can certainly play it, they just don't seem to get as much out of it.

There is a pokemon game specificially for the ds; Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. You are a pokemon in it and you're part of a team that saves other pokemon. It's fun and a nice change from the regular got catch em all pokemon games. I'd buy it before buying any non-DS title.

My thinking is still this; the OP's son asked for a specific game. If he's anything like my son, if he doesn't get that game or I try to improvise or improve, he'll still be disappointed. Oh, he'd be grateful, but somehow still a little sad.

I also suggest nintendogs. It is fun but it is more of a mini game. You play for a little bit and then move on.

My son really likes Sims - the Urbz - there is a DS version. You are a SIm and you need to earn money to move up in society. The jobs are games. Unlike the Sims for computers, it is E rated.

There is also Sims Pets - but this is not as good as Urbz. In Sims pets, you are a Vet who takes care of animals, cure them and train them.

My son also loves Lost in Blue - but that is a hard one to find these days. You are a castaway on an island and you need to survive and find a way off.

We are getting my son final fantasy III for DS.

I have my own DS (for all the traveling I do it is good entertainment) and I really like Brain Games. But my son does not.

Emerald and Ruby are a good choice - especially since you can often find them used at many of the game places. They are really fun - even though they don't take advantage of the DS's capabilities.

That's a great point. It'll be a while before the "gotta catch em all" game for the DS comes out.

So buy him Emerald if that's what he really wants. It's not a big deal at all to play it on the DS. And maybe he won't lose the stylus in the first five minutes of playing his new DS since he doesn't need it.

If he's not super set on Emerald, I would buy Mystery Dungeon.

You could always get both if that's an option.

I don't think he is really set on Emerald. I know he was reading Emerald reviews on Amazon and thought it was cool. Perhaps if he was reading the Mystery Dungeon reviews he would like it too!

So is the DS "experience" really that much better. I have no clue. If it is, I think I would lean to Mystery Dungeon. I think he would be happy with either.

Thanks in advance!

My son did not really like Mystery Dungeon compared to Emerald. He went back to Emerald and restarted it and I can't tell you the last time I saw him playing Mystery Dungeon. I hear Mystery Dungeon is good for linking up with others - but he hasn't done this. He found the dungeons rather repetitive and boring - maybe it gets better as you go and he didn't stick with it long enough. I haven't tried that one

But each kid is different!

If you could get emerald cheap or used (EB Games is a good source)- I'd do that and get a DS game too. Then he'd have the best of both.

One more quick thing - Ruby is the same as Emerald. Just different named and colored bad guys. So either one used is a good choice.

Good Luck!

To be totally honest, I really didn't like Mystery Dungeon, but I thought it was because I'm finally too old for Pokemon (26).

I, too thought it was WAY too repetitive.

Go with Emerald!

Or Pokemon Rangers for the DS comes out soon. I don't know too much about it.

This page lists all of the DS pokemon's. They have reviews and everything for them. Ign Pokemon reviews

Looks like they didn't like Ranger either.

There's no release date for Pokemon Diamond or Pearl. They've been released in japan, so its just a matter of translating.

I'd get Emerald for now.

If you do buy a used copy from EB or Gamestop, please make sure and ask them if the previous owners cleared their games from the built-in memory. We forgot to do that on one of the games we got DS10 last year. He put the game in and got all exited that he was already on level 6. We told him Santa or one of the elves must have been bored and they checked out his game to make sure it played ok.

And I will agree with another poster who said, if he has asked for Emerald, get it for him. For what ever reason, that is what he wants. We don't get any Pokemon game that DS doesn't ask for. He knows what they are, we don't.
