Which online tax program do you use?

We have always e-filed for free using a site we found on the irs website. Seems like we won't qualify for the freefile this year. Who do you use? I would like to get my taxes knocked out! I have all my information, just need to plop in the numbers. We own two houses, rented one of them for 8 months so we can't do the very basic form. Help! Thanks so much:cutie:

For the past few years we have used Turbo Tax and have been very satisfied. You can choose which level you need. We have always used the basic (including the year we sold our home and bought a new one). The program is guided and very easy to use. To e-file for state will cost extra. The total we spent on federal and state this year was $52.00.

You can still use the Fileforfree on the IRS website, you just have to do the return yourself. We don't qualify for the other part either. I think it was listed on the line below about the income limited info.

It took me about 30 minutes to enter all my stuff with its schedules and forms for tax credits but I had already "done" our taxes by hand and entered the info from those pages. I had to use the 1040 this year because we claimed the energy tax credit for replacing our heat pump.

Hope this helps

I sometimes use turbo tax, sometimes tax act. This year tax act is free to use and file federal for just about everyone.

I have used TaxSlayer for several years now and have been very happy with it :thumbsup2

Not sure if you're looking just to e-file or if you need help preparing the documents. Anyone can e-file for free. The IRS website will refer you to another site called freefillableforms.com - I've used them the last two years. They don't provide any assistence completing the right information in the right form, but they provide electronic versions of all the forms and do the math for you. If you need help in knowing which forms to use, etc.. I'm no help.

I prefer Taxact.com. I tried Turbotax this year and gave up. I think Taxact is more intuitive, and found I had to enter too much data in twice for Turbotax. :thumbsup2

I have used Turbo Tax for over 12 years now. Hubby used it before we got married. My sisters have used it for several years as well. We've never used any other program, so have nothing to compare it to, but have always been very satisfied with it. To me, it gets easier and easier each year. I like the fact that it automatically grabs a lot of your information from the previous year's tax return -- saves me lots of time -- not having to enter the same information over and over each year.

Also, if you can find someone that doesn't mind sharing, you can file at least 4 (if not 6) returns from the same program. I don't recall the exact number right now. So you could conceivably split the cost of the initial purchase of the software.

It is free to file the federal form and $20 to file the state form, so you need to decide if it's worth filing the state form electronically for $20. You cannot, however, file the state one electronically without filing the federal first.

If your state refund (providing you're entitled to one) is not worth the $20 electronic filing fee, then file a paper copy. Don't forget to include a copy of your federal form with the state form.

Hope this helps! :)

In MD you can go to the state's web site md.gov and do your own taxes for free, efile and usually get them in about 7 days. Give or take a few days off for the Blizzard we are having right now :) You need your completed federal 1040 to do the State. I went to turbo tax for free and eventually paid for the basic with free e-file 14.95

I just submitted with Taxact about 10 minutes ago. I used it last year, too, and really like it. Last year I went through my info with Taxact and TurboTax and Taxact gave me the biggest refund.

ETA: Total cost to file state and federal was 14.95. A lot better than the almost $200 we were spending at H&R Block a few years ago!!!

I use Turbo Tax and have for the last few years. I get a discount code from my credit union and just go straight to their website and start. Because all of my information is stored from year to year, it's quick and painless.

I've been using TaxAct for the last several years and really like it. It did cost a little to file, but it saves your information and carries it over to the next year's return which is a huge timesaver! It's worth $15 to me to save the time and aggravation of having to look everything up and enter it again every year.

I've used TurboTax for years. I love the website, so easy to follow!
I've used the free version and also paid for upgrades on a few occasions.
The site itself is always reliable, I've never had issues. :thumbsup2

Does anyone feel weird about entering so much personal stuff online? We got Turbo Tax for free a few yrs ago but I didn't like entering so much personal info on a computer. Entering a cc for shopping is one thing but entering tax return info really worried me. I went back to the old pencil & paper w/snail mail. I've been doing it myself since I was 16 at my 1st PT job so it's easy.

pp: Have a great time in Ireland!!! :cool1: :thumbsup2 We went there for our honeymoon. It's awesome! :cloud9:
